Facing down his third indictment, former president Donald Trump’s legal team appears to have prepared three pillars of their defense for him. But on Sunday, MSNBC host Jen Psaki tore down each and every “absurd” one.
Before fully getting into things, Psaki prefaced that she isn’t a lawyer, nor has she ever been one. But, she argued, it doesn’t even take a lawyer to spot flaws in the options that Trump’s team has drawn up.

Walden Media has preemptively acquired N.K. Jemisin’s bestselling “The Great Cities” duology, “The City We Became” and “The World We Make,” with the intention to develop both books into an ongoing series.
“The City We Became” is set in an alternate version of the world, where major cities like New York City become sentient through human avatars. After the avatar of New York falls into a supernatural coma and vanishes, a group of five new avatars representing New York’s boroughs come together to fight their common enemy and save New York — and, potentially, the world.
The collection marks Jemisin’s first books after her “Broken Earth” Trilogy, which comprised 2015’s “The Fifth Season,” 2016’s “The Obelisk Gate” and 2017’s “The Stone Sky.”

There are hardly any other networks that have undergone more disruption over the past nine months than Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT and TBS have post-merger — and it’s not over.
The TNets just saw their major January series premieres — previously announced and already promoted — scrapped at the last minute. That includes Season 4 of TBS’ Miracle Workers, which had been slated to open January 16; Season 2 of the network’s unscripted series The Cube, which had been slotted for a January 8 debut; as well as TNT’s acquired British drama The Lazarus Project, which had been teed up for a January 23 launch. You can watch Miracle Workers promo below.

There has been, for some time now, much discussion in regards to when (if ever) the box office will return to "normal." Are we ever going to get back to pre-pandemic levels of moviegoing? That remains to be seen but, as January rolls on in 2023, we have reason to be encouraged. Over the MLK holiday weekend, "Avatar: The Way of Water" proved its resilience, inching ever closer to becoming our first 2 billion movie since 2019. Meanwhile, "M3GAN" continues to cement herself as a modern horror icon, while "Puss in Boots" confirmed his status as a beloved pop culture figure divorced from "Shrek."
But that was just the holdovers! This holiday weekend also brought with it a trio of new releases in the forms of Lionsgate's action/thriller "Plane" (which I personally loved), Warner Bros.' "House Party" remake, and indie viral horror sensation "Skinamarink." Not to mention the Tom Hanks...

The jury at Newfest today gave the prize for Best US Narrative Feature to Carter Smith's imaginative drug-smuggling fable Swallowed, praising its "transgressive boldness, conceptual and tonal uniqueness and complex, layered approach to queer storytelling, characters and aesthetic." It's a big award for a small film which also impressed audiences at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Frightfest and Fantastic Fest earlier this year, and whose director told us that what he really wants is simply to see more queer stories told in scary movies.
Winning the Best Documentary award at the New York City-based festival was Uýra - The Rising Forest, a portrait of a Brazilian artist and ecologist who draws on her indigenous roots to find creative ways of fighting back against the destruction of the natural environment. "This is her film, she guided us. We just offered the filmmaking tools that we.

Over his long career, Tom Hanks has established a rock-solid screen persona as an affectionate, good-natured father figure. The culmination of this squeaky-clean image was perhaps his Oscar-nominated performance as a TV host and legendary mensch Fred Rogers in 2019’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” But more recent films like “News of the World,” “Finch,” and especially this year’s “Elvis” have seen Hanks embrace darker, more emotionally ambiguous characters.

WaterTower Music has released the first music to be heard from the upcoming New Line Cinema action adventure “Black Adam,” starring Dwayne Johnson. The first-ever feature film to explore the story of the uncompromising DC antihero comes to the big screen under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (“Jungle Cruise”). The Black Adam Theme (from “Black Adam”) by highly respected Grammy Award-winning and Emmy-nominated composer Lorne Balfe has just been released – in advance of the film and soundtrack release. “Black Adam” smashes into theaters and IMAX internationally beginning 19 October 2022, and in North America on October 21, 2022.
Balfe’s vision for the music of Black Adam encompasses an exploration into the back stories that define the characters. The composer commented on that approach. “It was exciting to get into the Black Adam theme, and I really wanted to capture his essence as the DC comic book world’s anti-hero. We had a large...

Exclusive: There probably has been no other division of WarnerMedia more impacted by the Discovery merger than the TNets, which consist of TNT, TBS and TruTV. In the span of a couple of months after the transaction was completed, they got new leadership, with Discovery’s Kathleen Finch adding them to her portfolio, while the previous toppers exited: General Manager Brett Weitz, SVP Original Programming Adrienne O’Riain, and unscripted chief Corie Henson.
The new owners quickly scrapped or ended scripted series such as Chad, Snowpiercer and Kill the Orange Bear, cut a number of unscripted series such as the already completed The Big D, and let go a number of big-ticket development.

Miguel Sapochnik, a TV director who joined the directing team of Game of Thrones in its fifth season and went on to helm some of the best late-series episodes, is leaving the show’s prequel series House of the Dragon from his position as co-showrunner with Ryan Condal.

The departure was his decision, with sources saying Sapochnik had grown fatigued after the show’s lengthy pre-production and filming phases from when it was first ordered by HBO in October 2019.

Following the WWII drama “Greyhound” and the sci-fi film “Finch,” Tom Hanks, his Playtone production company, and producing partner Gary Goetzman have enjoyed a good relationship with Apple TV+. And in addition to the Playtone deal, an individual with knowledge also told TheWrap that a sequel to Hanks’ WWII epic “Greyhound” is also currently in development.
As part of the exclusive deal, Apple Studios will develop, produce and distribute globally Playtone projects, and it encompasses any scripted series, documentaries or other unscripted properties.
No other details about the “Greyhound” sequel were immediately available or whether Hanks would be expected to return to star, but Apple Studios would be producing the sequel.

“Dune” and “Encanto” were the big winners at the Visual Effects Society’s 2022 Ves Awards, which were handed out on Tuesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Both films won four awards, with “Dune” taking Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the Ves category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Winners in the category have gone on to win the Oscar 10 times in the past 19 years, but the last film to do so was “The Jungle Book” in 2017.
“Dune” is nominated for the Best Visual Effects Oscar along with “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which won a Ves Award for its mirror-dimension environment, and “Free Guy” “No Time to Die” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which did not win anything.

Apple has shelled out untold millions on original content for Apple TV Plus. And CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that it isn’t necessarily looking for a financial payback on that investment.
“We don’t make purely financial decisions about the content [on Apple TV Plus]. We try to find great content that has a reason for being,” he said on Apple’s quarterly earnings call Thursday. Cook was responding to an analyst’s question about whether the service’s “socially responsible” programming lens might be causing Apple to be hesitant about acquiring a studio.
The CEO called out the Emmy-winning “Ted Lasso,” starring Jason Sudekis as the fish-out-of-water American football coach leading an English soccer club.
“We love shows like ‘Ted Lasso’ and several of the other shows… that have a reason for existing and may have a good message, and may make people feel better at the end of it,” Cook said. He added,...
