- Impoverished aristocrat Sir St John Pryde plans to sell estate land, which antagonizes his tenants led by left-wing Alan Archer. On the day Pryde castle is opened to the public tour guide Audrey Diggle is murdered after claiming that she has evidence to state that the Prydes are not the lawful heirs to the title though St John's nephew Jago believes his uncle was the intended victim and St John's daughter Bunty is secretly in love with Archer. After an attempt to kill Jago Father Brown unmasks the murderer, in the process demonstrating that a supposed family curse has a basis in truth.—don @ minifie-1
- Father Brown investigates the death of Audrey Diggle who only that morning had been conducting historical research at the rectory. She had been conducting a tour at Pryde castle, in period costume, when she was shot in the back with an arrow. The Prydes had opened the castle to the paying public to help pay death duties and were also in the process of selling some of the estate's land holdings, something that outraged local activist Alan Archer. Audrey had discovered something about the Prydes in the church archive but Sir St.John Pryde's nephew Jago questions whether Audrey was even the killer's target. Brown realizes that part of the solution to the crime is found in a supposed Pryde family curse.—garykmcd
- Father Brown's party and half Kembleford attends the guided tours organized by Sir St John Pryde's impoverished aristocratic family as they struggle to maintain their ancestral castle and prepare to wed off daughter Bunty to a mega-rich duke's son, although more in love with butler Arthur Danby's son, 'communist' lawyer Alan, then with the marquess. While in-living, 'strange' cousin Audrey Diggle, who claimed to make a shocking discovery writing a family chronicle, guides a tourist party explaining such juicy legends as the course of a witch, she's fittingly killed by an arrow from a castle tower. Inspector Sullivan and Brown speculate the real target may have been Sir John. The parish archives, where a page was torn, and the diocesan copy, yield Audrey's discovery, and clues to more family secrets, while in-living junior cousin Jago Pryde survives fatal poisoning by change.—KGF Vissers
