Mofac Animation Inc., South Korea’s most decorated visual effects studio, proudly announces its first-ever full-length animated movie: The King of Kings, an animated family film inspired by a little-known short story by Charles Dickens depicting the life and times of Jesus Christ.
The faith-based movie is in its final stages of production at Mofac Animation, as well as in performance recordings from the United Kingdom to the Hawaiian Islands – and numerous locations in between. The ever-growing, A-list cast will be announced at a future date. Mofac Animation is currently seeking potential distributors.
In the film, Charles Dickens finds trouble balancing his writing and performing with the parenting of his children – particularly his youngest son, Walter. Charles discovers the perfect bonding element via the sharing of his short story The Life of Our Lord – the reading of which would become an annual tradition in the Dickens’ family Christmas celebration. Four weeks after its initial release, South Korean horror film “Exhuma” is still burning through the country’s box office. “Pamyo,” as it’s known in Korea (which directly translates to “exhumation for relocation or cremation”), has resonated in a major way with audiences who have shown up in droves to see the story of a shaman named Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and the wandering spirits she takes on with Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun), her protégé. This week: it expands in the United States.
Just one week into its release, “Exhuma” became the highest-grossing Korean film of 2024 so far, knocking the Timothée Chalamet-starring “Wonka” off the top spot following its delayed release there. Chalamet’s other big film of the moment, “Dune: Part Two,” placed second in Korea for three successive weekends in the wake of “Exhuma” too.
That means that, nearly a month in, “Exhuma” has made $67.8 million with sales of 9.3 million tickets,...

Major U.S. acquisitions of Asian film titles have been scarce at the American Film Market so far this year, but business within the region nonetheless has been humming. The much-anticipated Korean period action tentpole Noryang: Deadly Sea has scored a deal at AFM for Japan distribution with Tokyo-based Twin Co. Ltd.
Seoul-based sales agent Acemaker Movieworks is repping the title to international buyers.
The film is the third and final title in director Kim Han-min’s trilogy about battles led by the famed Korean admiral Yi Sun-shin that started with The Admiral: Roaring Currents in 2014 and was followed by Hansan: Rising Dragon in 2022. The first film earned $138 million worldwide, which was the most ever by a Korean film at the time.

Back when Kim Han-min made “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” in 2014, little did he know that the film would go on to become the highest grossing Korean film of all time, a record still held by it, or that he would go on to make a trilogy of features on its lead character, legendary real-life naval commander, the much loved Admiral Yi Sun-shin. Yet here we are, just under a decade since the release of “The Admiral”, and the final film in the Yi Sun-shin trilogy looks finally set to release, following on from last year’s “Hansan: Rising Dragon”.
Synopsis
In 1598, the seven-year Imjin War nears an end as Wae invaders prepare to withdraw from Joseon. Admiral Yi Sun-shin leads an allied fleet of Joseon and Ming ships to annihilate the Wae army. Joseon, Ming, and Wae forces clash at Noryang Strait, the deadly sea where Admiral Yi fights his last valiant battle.

Long-awaited indeed — “Noryang: Deadly Sea”, the third part of the trilogy that constitutes “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” and its prequel “Hansan: Rising Dragon”, two epics with the most stunning sea battles ever filmed. The first film has at least 60 mins of non-stop warfare.
The trilogy, directed by Kim Han-min, follows the legendary naval commander Yi Sun-sin, who led the Joseon navy to several victories against the invading Japanese forces during the Imjin War (1592-1598). The first film, The Admiral: Roaring Currents, released in 2014, depicts the Battle of Myeongnyang, where Yi and his 12 ships faced 333 Japanese warships and achieved a miraculous victory. The film became the most-watched and highest-grossing film of all time in South Korea, with 17.6 million admissions and a worldwide gross of US$138.3 million12.
The second film, Hansan: Rising Dragon, released in 2022, is a prequel that portrays the Battle of Hansan Island, which took place five years before Myeongnyang.

The great Choi Min-sik was on hand to take early headlines at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan).
Described somewhat blandly as “a highly reliable performer” by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), Choi is not only the star of Korea’s top grossing film of all time “The Admiral: Roaring Currents,” he continues to be available for work of all different levels. He appears in no less than ten titles that played at the festival this week.
The festival also does reliable — in its own way – as it plays up to its “stay strange” mantra, cooperates with other festivals of a similar fantasy leaning and sidesteps the political infighting that currently bedevil Korea’s best-known festivals.
The selection runs from a documentary about Korean reunification to Anurag Kashyap’s “Kennedy,” a crime drama in which former adult movie star Sunny Leone gets to show that she has evolved into a versatile and confident actor.

South Korea’s box office proved remarkably resilient during the pandemic. Theaters never really closed. But the market has needed a big local blockbuster, and “Train to Busan” star Don Lee provided it with his return as a cranky detective kicking righteous ass in the critically acclaimed “The Roundup: No Way Out.”
With a massive $60.35 million in just over two weeks, the action sequel was what South Korean theaters needed after a slow start to 2023 mostly dominated by Hollywood films like “Avatar: The Way of Water” and Japanese releases like “The First Slam Dunk.”
With a population of 51.7 million, under a sixth the size of the U.S., South Korea punches above its weight cinematically: It’s the sixth-largest theatrical market, just behind France, according to Gower Street Analytics, and movie-crazy enough that it outperforms larger countries with well-developed economies like Germany.

One of the leading actors of his generation, Korea’s Choi Min-sik is tackling his first TV role in some 25 years, with Disney+ crime drama series “Big Bet.” Choi says the gamble was a challenge, but ultimately worth the risk.
While he has notched up iconic cinema roles in “Oldboy” “Shiri,” “I Saw the Devil,” Luc Besson’s “Lucy” and all-time Korean box office record holder “Roaring Currents,” Choi’s last significant TV role was in dark comedy “The Moon of Seoul” (aka “Seoul ui Dal”) in the 20th century’s pre-streaming era.
Choi says that the changes in the TV industry are palpable and mostly for the better.
“Dramas are now produced entirely in advance of broadcast. Before, we would have what we call ‘on-the-spot’ scripts. They would be literally written on the day of filming, which left very little time to memorize the lines,” Choi told Variety.

2022 was finally the year that the Korean box office, after the pandemic, was defibrillated back to life. Producers and distributors were finally confident that the time was right for big budget, blockbuster projects, that had long been queueing up for a release, to start making their way to the theatres. After having to resort to Ott streaming and generally smaller scale films, the audience too was hungry to see high-value productions, entertainment and their favorite stars on the big screen and thronged to the theatres, lapping up these releases. So much so that 2022 saw four new films make their way into the 100 highest grossing Korean films of all tie at the domestic box-office, with Ma Dong-seok’s “The Roundup” even rolling comfortably into the top 10.
2023 too began strongly, with the long-in-production “The Point Men” starring Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin and the Sol Kyung-gu led ensemble spy thriller “Phantom” opening the year strong.

Back in 2014, director Kim Han-min’s “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” released in Korean and international theatres and in the process set a record for the highest grossing Korean film of all time at the domestic box office, a record that no other feature has managed to push it off of even eight years later. Based on one of the most important and famous naval battles in history, the feature benefitted from the legendary hero status of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, a man so revered and loved that he has a statue of himself in the center of Seoul. Following up such a successful production can be daunting for a person, but Kim Han-min went down a unique path to follow it up; he decided to do not one but two different features and do a full trilogy on Yi Sun-shin, with the second story coming in the form of “Hansan: Rising Dragon...

With improved technological flexibility and eager audiences supporting studio investment, there’s an ever-increasing number of impressive medieval battle films out there (and some good work on the small screen too), but one can still count the number of truly great naval equivalents on the fingers of one hand. Kim Han-min has already made a good effort, with 2014’s The Admiral: Roaring Currents, and here he attempts to pull off a similar feat, focusing on the Battle of Hansan Island, which preceded that story in that film and is widely considered to be a turning point in the Imjin war. Had it gone differently, Korea as we know it today might not exist – and yet it was fought in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds.

Cinemas in South Korea received the good news last week that anti-covid measures, including reduced seating capacity and bans on consumption of food and drink, were to end. But audiences reacted gingerly.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” led the box office for a second weekend with 1.63 million, a drop of 44 from its opening weekend, and a 12-day cumulative of 6.55 million. Its three-day score represented 42 of the total weekend market and was more than 1 million more than the second placed film. It pointed to a continuation of a market that is hit driven and propelled by specific titles, rather than a mass return to cinemas.
The nationwide aggregate for the weekend was 3.89 million, down on the previous weekend’s 4.07 million, and still within a deeply depressed range that has persisted through all of February and March.

After a six-year hiatus, Korean cinema is set to return to the Chinese big screen in wide release at last.
This Friday, Dec. 3, Chinese cinemas will run the 2020 comedy “Oh! My Gran (Oh! Moon-Hee),” official posters said Wednesday. Directed by Jeong Se-Gyo and written by Kim Soo-jin, the title stars Na Moon-hee as Moon-hee, the titular spirited grandma suffering from Alzheimer’s disease who, along with her dog, are the only witnesses of a hit-and-run accident that leaves her grandchild unconscious. The film tells the story of the sleuthing that ensues when she remembers a clue to the culprit.
When Seoul deployed the Thaad U.S. missile defense system in 2016, Beijing expressed its displeasure with a ban on Korean film and culture imports. A Korean film hasn’t had a proper theatrical outing in the mainland since 2015’s “The Assassination,” co-written and directed by Choi Dong-hoon.

The Busan festival has experienced its share of fandom in previous editions, with everything from frenetic crowds at guest visits in Haeundae, an overflowing Biff Square in Nampodong, through to star-struck teenagers camping in the entrance to the Grand Hotel. None of these are particularly appropriate in the age of Covid and social distancing.
With that in mind, the festival has built what it calls an ‘Actors House,’ a slightly more respectful and arms-length series of encounters between on-screen stars and their public. The series consists of six, more in-depth conversations with successful, younger talent.
They will be sharing stories that have never been heard before, including their acting philosophy and their most memorable scenes, organizers say. The sessions are moderated by Una Beck, the head of Una Labo Actorology.
Highest profile participants are actress Uhm Junghwa and actor Cho Jinwoong, who have established their filmographies across the silver screen and television.

South Korean entertainment powerhouse Cj Enm is eyeing a bigger role on the world stage, saying it will invest more than 5 trillion won ($4.5B) in content creation over the next five years. The company behind Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar winner Parasite and Fox’s I Can See Your Voice has already set aside 800B won ($721M) for productions this year, CEO Kang Ho-sung said at a press conference in Seoul today, according to the Yonhap news agency.
“We will become a comprehensive entertainment company through diversifying content creating systems and meeting consumers’ demands on a real-time basis. And we will compete with global platform and media powerhouses,” Kang vowed.
Cj Enm is a major player in Asia and has a presence globally; in 2020, it made a strategic investment in David Ellison’s Skydance Media whose TV division is adapting 2019 Korean fantasy drama Hotel Del Luna as a series. Earlier this month,...

After the abysmal year for cinema that 2020 was, one can only hope that 2021 proves to be a lot better for films the world over. While the coronavirus situation ebbs and flows in various places, film releases are getting more and more frequent. Even if studios are still slightly hesitant to release some tentpole films, audiences are slowly finding their way back into the theatres.
Due to the delay in production and release on several projects last year, films that would otherwise have released back them are only now beginning to find their way into theatres or on Ott platforms, while some studios have even decided to indefinitely postpone production on some major titles. As a result, our list of Most Anticipated Korean Films of 2020 (which has been updated with the status of each project to the best of our knowledge) still remains valid and can be checked out to see...

South Korea’s Cj Entertainment, the studio behind multiple Oscar-winner “Parasite,” confirmed that it is leading its AFM sales slate with “Decision to Leave,” the newly announced title by another master director, “Oldboy” helmer Park Chan-wook.
The studio is pitching the film as a crime-romancer with dialogue in Korean and Chinese. The story involves a detective, to be played by Park Hae-il (“Memories of Murder”), who develops romantic feelings for a woman, played by China’s Tang Wei, who should be the prime suspect in a murder case he is investigating.
The studio provides no other updated information on delivery, production budget or supplementary casting. When Cj announced the film last month, it said that it would be investor and local Korean distributor of the film, but told Variety at the time that it had not settled on the international sales agency role.

Choi Min-sik last appeared on the small screen 24 years ago in Mbc’s “Love and Separation”. Since then, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the greatest actors of all time in Korean cinema, after working in films like “Shiri“, “Oldboy“, “I Saw The Devil” and “The Admiral: Roaring Currents“, among several others.
Reports today are suggesting that the actor is “positively considering” a comeback to the television drama format with “Casino” which will be written and directed by “The Outlaws” director Kang Yoon-sung. While not much is known about the story of the project yet, it is said to be revolving around the turbulent life of a man with a casino as a backdrop to the story.
Choi has previously shown enthusiasm to return to the small screen in various interviews.

Kim Yoon-seok’s management has confirmed that the actor/director is all set to play the legendary naval hero Admiral Yi Sun-sin in director Kim Han-min’s new project “Noryang” (translated title).
“Noryang” will see the completion of Kim Han-min’s trilogy on Yi Sun-sin. He first told the naval commander’s story in the smash hit “The Admiral: Roaring Currents”, currently the highest grossing Korean film of all time at the domestic box-office, with Choi Min-sik playing the character. “Hansan” (translated title), his follow-up to the 2014 film, is currently in production with Park Hae-il playing a younger version of the commander in the first full-scale war with the Japanese since the invasion.
Kim Yoon-seok will be the fourth actor to portray the character on screen. The naval strategist commander, whose statue still stands proudly at Hwanghwamun Plaza, Seoul, was also played in a fictional narrative in the 2005 period action-comedy “Heaven’s Gate” by Park Joong-hoon.

This week’s return episode marked John Mulaney’s third time hosting “Saturday Night Live.” After two stellar hosting stints, it seems we know exactly what we’re going to get out of that. However, unlike the first two times, this episode wasn’t as driven by Mulaney’s creativity as anyone would expect or want.
Host: John Mulaney
“I am like Louis Farrakhan: I mean a lot to a small group of people.”
That’s what Mulaney says during his opening monologue, to explain why anyone watching at home may not recognize him. It’s been the running thread throughout each of his hosting stints, as in his first time when he stressed he’s not an A-list star, yet he’s in this position. As someone who was never a performer on “SNL” — save for a few Weekend Update appearances — and simply (“simply”) a writer for the show,...

Films about the Joseon era had been among the most popular in S. Korea for years now, particularly through their combination of blockbuster production values and historic setting. This tendency found its apogee in “The Admiral”, a 2014 film based on the historical Battle of Myeongnyang, which recorded 10 million viewers in 12 days, setting a record for achieving 10 million viewers in the shortest amount of time, and in the process becoming the highest grossing film of all time in S. Korea, a place it still holds.
The story begins with the events leading to the naval battle, which, actually, became the duel between two men: Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin and Kusushima Michifusa, whom Hideyoshi Toyotomi sent to Joseon to take over the navy. In the beginning of the film, both men have a number of issues to deal with. Yi Sun-sin has been just released from prison after the disaster at Chilcheollyang,...
