Jez Butterworth will adapt Don DeLillo’s “The Silence” for the screen, Variety has learned. Producer Uri Singer, who is also producing and helped put together Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of another DeLillo novel, “White Noise,” has secured the rights to the book, which was published in 2020.
“The Silence” unfolds at a dinner party in Manhattan during Super Bowl Sunday in the year 2022. The diners include a retired physics professor, her husband and her former student. They are waiting for a couple, who is set to join them after flying in from Paris. To share more might risk ruining the post-modern twists and turns.
Vincent Sieber (“The Chronicles of Narnia” at Netflix) of Midnight Road will produce alongside Singer.
Butterworth is one of the most acclaimed playwrights working today. He has written such award-winning plays as “Jerusalem,” “The River,” “Mojo” and “The Ferryman.” He won the Olivier Award for best...

“Slave Play” made history back in October when it received 12 Tony Awards nominations, the most ever for a play. Five of those citations recognize members of its stellar ensemble, including a bid in Actress, two in Featured Actor, and two in Featured Actress. While “Slave Play” is the frontrunner for Best Play according to our exclusive Tony Awards predictions, none of its cast will take home trophies. But could an upset be looming?
Though it seems counterintuitive that Tony voters would award a play the top honor without recognizing at least one of its performers, it has happened six times in the past 20 years, including the two most recent. In 2019, Jez Butterworth’s “The Ferryman,” an expansive family drama about The Troubles in Ireland, won the top prize and trophies for Director (Sam Mendes), Scenic Design, and Costume Design, but didn’t pick up awards for its three nominated performers: actor Paddy Considine,...

Endeavor Content has come on board as the global sales agent for “The Panthers,” a music-influenced social justice drama series from New Zealand.
It was Friday confirmed that the series will make its international premiere as an official selection at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, as part of the Primetime program.
The six, hour-long episodes, based-on-a-true-story series covers a devastating and resonant period in New Zealand’s history through the dramatization of the founding of The Polynesian Panthers – a revolutionary social justice movement directly inspired by the Black Panther movement in the U.S.
The 1974-set narrative follows a young man who is the black sheep of his Tongan family who is frustrated by his community being stuck in a broken economic and criminal justice system. In the face of increasingly aggressive racial-profiling from the government and police force, he forms his own revolutionary movement The Polynesian Panthers, while also...

“Roles like this never come along where you have such complexity in a character,” says actress Laura Donnelly of her role in “The Nevers.” She portrays Amalia True in the HBO period/sci-fi mashup. Amalia at times gets glimpses of future events, beats down bad guys, and harbors other identities that are revealed as the series goes on. “Complexity” might be an understatement. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Though viewers had to wait for Amalia’s backstory to unravel over the course of the season, Donnelly was gifted with this information from day one. The actress was thankful for the intel because it provided her “an opportunity to play the secrets that the character carries.” This involves a depressing origin story as a widow named Molly, and the hidden identity of a soldier from the future, known only as Stripe, who is trying to save the world from destruction.

Paddy Considine, co-star of the 2020 HBO series The Outsider and The Third Day, will lead the cast of House of the Dragon, the network’s straight-to-series Game of Thrones prequel from George R.R. Martin, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.
Based on Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series, which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen.
In the 10-episode first season, Considine will play King Viserys Targaryen, chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do not necessarily make for great kings.

At the risk of overgeneralizing, why is it that cheapie musicals are so much more charming to watch on screen than they are when some friend invites you to whatever way-off-Broadway show they’ve managed to get mixed up in? Heck, these tiny film projects are often more endearing than the relatively big-budget ones the Hollywood studios produce. I’ll take “Colma” over “Cats” any day, and would watch “Once” ten times before sitting through “Into the Woods” again.
Big and bombastic works great on stage, but tends to look garish and awkward on screen, whereas scrappy tuners somehow feel more sincere when the camera can go in for a closeup, à la “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “Hello Again.” That strategy — of letting the actors’ faces sell the emotion behind frequently corny lyrics — saves the day in Jack Danini’s “Ode to Passion,” a micro-budget contemporary rock musical...

Sam Mendes has a plan to save the UK’s theaters. The film and stage director, who won a Tony for his helming of The Ferryman in 2019, has outlined his vision for a rescue package to prop up the country’s venues that have been hit hard by the coronavirus lockdown.
Writing in the Financial Times, Mendes called the current situation the “biggest challenge to Britain’s cultural life since the outbreak of the Second World War”.
“The country’s theatres and actors, musicians and music venues, dancers and dance spaces, concert halls and opera houses are all under threat. The theatre needs a plan, and I believe we have one,” he continued.
Mendes states the “continuance of social distancing makes the prospect of reopening simply impossible” for theaters, in contrast with films in cinemas which he believes could still have “a relatively successful socially distanced commercial run”.

Getting trapped on a secluded island paradise may not have sounded so bad a few weeks ago, but in a post epidemic-world, that mysterious premise may tap into some very relevant anxieties. At least, that’s as much as can be gleaned from the intriguing first trailer for “The Third Day,” a new HBO limited series starring Jude Law and Naomie Harris. The trailer features eerily upbeat music, some stunning aerial shots of a winding road submerged in water, and plenty of smoldering Law looks.
Here’s the official synopsis, according to HBO: “The show is divided into two parts: ‘Summer’ and ‘Winter.’ In ‘Summer,’ one man (Jude Law) visits a mysterious island off the British coast and discovers a group of inhabitants intent on preserving their home at any cost. In the second half, aka ‘Winter,’ a strong-willed outsider (Naomie Harris) comes to the island seeking answers — but instead...

Few directors have had as spectacular a debut as British stage director Sam Mendes onto the film scene. Leading Hong Kong actor, Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Jettone, the Wong Kar-wai-owned company that has represented him for the past 28 years, have gone their separate ways.

The 54th Annual Golden Horse Awards were held today in Taipei. That's the Taiwanese Oscars if you will. Though a female-led comedy called The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful took the top prizes, the film with the most wins was The Great Buddha+ which took home five. A romantic comedy called See You Tomorrow (the all-star cast includes Tfe favorites Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Angelababy) took home most of the 'eye candy' prizes. The family tragedy Old Beast, about a father in court and at war with his kids, also did well.

The nominees for the 11th Annual Asian Film Awards were announced last week.
The ceremony is to be held in Hong Kong after a long stint in Macau. The reason for this changeover is to pay homage to the 20th anniversary since the handover of Hong Kong. This year, 34 films received nominations. Out of those 34, 21 are of Chiniese-origin, and 20 are South Korean, making South Korean films the second most nominated.
Some of the best releases of 2016 are up against each other this year. Park Chan Wook’s, “The Handmaiden,” although it did not receive a nod for best film nor best director, it did receive a levy of other nominations including: best supporting actress (Moon So-ri), best newcomer, best screenplay, best editing, best costume design, and best production design. Another strong Korean film up for several awards is “Train to Busan.” This outrageously popular zombie-horror film is up for five...

"Everything looks better when one's drunk," says See You Tomorrow's protagonist when asked to explain his penchant for a tipple. If that's really true, Chinese novelist Zhang Jiajia's directorial debut should be washed down with a steady stream of hard liquor. Revolving around a bar owner and the broken relationships of his friends and clientele, the film is an impermeable melange of shapeless storytelling, rehashed gags, vacuous relationships and painfully over-the-top performances from its usually top-notch cast.
Released to much fanfare in China because of producer Wong Kar-wai's pedigree, See You Tomorrow enjoyed a strong opening-weekend run — $49.1 million in...

Just as Wong announces his next feature, "Blossoms," an adaptation of short stories by Jin Yucheng, set in Shanghai (which he will make before "The Ferryman," his follow-up to "The Grandmaster"), he previewed a fabulous career detour. The filmmaker and Oscar-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley gave media a Fashion Week peek at their "China: Through the Looking Glass" exhibition of Chinese art and costume that opens in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Watch: Toh's video interview with Wong Kar Wai for "The Grandmaster." Wong is the artistic director of the show, an ambitious look at culture and art through China’s relations with the West. In Monday's short announcement speech, flanked by Vogue editrix Anna Wintour and huge Buddha figures in the Met galleries, he cited the Buddhist principal that, “in the sky, there is no East or West,” and hoped the exhibition would build.

Following on from "The Grandmaster," filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai has shifted his plans for his next project with an adaptation of short stories by Jin Yucheng entitled "Blossoms" set to be his next film.
The book provides a vivid image of the daily life of ordinary Shanghai people and focuses on around one hundred characters over two time-lines: from the 1960s to the mid-1970s, and from the 1980s to the start of the 21st century.
As the two time periods alternate, the book unveils the two faces of the city: the Shanghai of old and the modernized metropolis of today. Wong is scripting the film version with Jin which will likely focus on a smaller subset of characters.
Wong was originally going to make "The Ferryman" next but now only remains attached to that project as a producer.

A box office star in Asia whose directorial debut, So Young, broke Chinese records in 2013, Vicki Zhao Wei has helped Alibaba Pictures Group regain some ground after it stumbled following revelations of accounting irregularities last year. The actress and helmer has taken a 9.18% stake in the Hong Kong-based film division of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holdings. The $400M investment reportedly makes Zhao the second largest shareholder and is seen as good news for a company which has experienced a fair few headaches since it was rechristened last year after Alibaba bought 60% of what was previously ChinaVision Media. Bloomberg reports the unit rose the most it has in five months on the news involving Zhao (who purchased the shares with her husband via their Gold Ocean Media). It closed up 5.1% in Hong Kong trading on Tuesday with a $4.5B market capitalization — more than five times its value when Alibaba announced plans...

It appears that Wong Kar Wai will reunite with his favorite leading man for his upcoming project The Ferryman with reports that Tony Leung has signed on to play the lead. Having previously starred for Wkw as the lead in In The Mood For Love, The Grandmaster and others, Leung joins a picture that will be backed by Chinese media giant Alibaba as part of their first foray into film production.Adapted from a short story published by Zhang Jiajia as part of his collection I Belonged To You, word of The Ferryman first broke back in June with Hong Kong based Mei Ah announced as the financial backers. There does not appear to be any word just yet whether Alibaba have supplanted the earlier backer...
