The controversial adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet starring Tom Holland and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers has finally premiered and the first reactions are coming in. Jamie Lloyd adapted this version and the director is known for his very modernized remakes of stage classics, and that fact has already caused some controversy in the theater circles. But, pairing Lloyd with Holland made the tickets sell, especially since this was Holland’s first return to the stage after Billy Elliot: The Musical, in which he appeared very early in his career. Even before the premiere, the show has been heavily discussed by fans due to the hate given to Juliet’s actress Francesca Amewudah-Rivers due to her skin color.
But, based on the early reviews that we have for you, it seems that Francesca Amewudah-Rivers completely outshined Holland, whose performance was described as disappointing, while Ameduwah-Rivers managed to stand out and...

There’s been a lot of heat around London’s new Romeo & Juliet, understandably so given its pairing of director Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal, A Doll’s House), known for his radical remodeling of classics, usually around A-list actors, with young global superstar Tom Holland. The latter is returning to the stage for the first time since Billy Elliot: The Musical at the very start of his career, his name causing tickets to sell out in just two hours.
It’s ironic, then, that one thing this production itself lacks is heat — romantic, dramatic, tragic heat. There is much to commend, but it suffers from a single, strategic mistake on the director’s part, to mute the action, quite literally, since much of it is played in whispers and mumbles; even miked, at times the actors are barely audible. The result is that this tale of violent family rivalry and courageous...

In 2017, Tom Holland won his first BAFTA Award as the year’s Rising Star. The British Academy may have been a little late in recognizing the young actor, as Holland first won international critical acclaim five years earlier with his spectacular on-screen debut as a tsunami survivor in J.A. Bayona‘s “The Impossible.” Even then, Holland was considered a bit of an acting veteran, as four years earlier, at age 12, he hit the London stage with a leading role in the award-winning “Billy Elliot: The Musical.”
Impressed with his dance skills and gymnastics background (as well as his dramatic chops), Marvel signed Holland to a six-picture deal to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU. Most importantly, the young actor received the key blessing from Stan Lee, who said that Holland was the “exact age and height” he had in mind when he envisioned the character. Tom Holland rose to international recognition with his portrayal of Peter Parker, a.k.a., Spider-Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Captain America: Civil War. The audience’s perception of the actor has been solidified with his standalone movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. There is no doubt that he is indeed one of the finest young actors in the entertainment industry currently.
The English actor has also been a part of movies, including Uncharted, The Devil All the Time, and Cherry. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Holland’s performance and dedication to the Apple TV+ miniseries The Crowded Room was appreciated by the fans. The actor is now looking forward to returning to stage, performing one of the most beloved characters of William Shakespeare, and giving Leonardo DiCaprio a tough competition for its title.

“The Devil Wears Prada” cast members Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt reunited at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards to present best actor in a comedy series. Blunt was also a nominee at the award ceremony for supporting actress thanks to her role in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”
Streep took to the stage first alone and told the crowd that she had forgotten her glasses and the envelope with this year’s winner listed. Hathaway and Blunt then appeared to hand Streep her missing items, a nod to their roles as assistants to Miranda Priestly (Streep) in “The Devil Wears Prada.”
“Meryl and Miranda Priestly are sort of like twins,” Blunt said, to which Streep fiercely disagreed.
“No no. That wasn’t a question,” Hathaway told Streep in a nod to one of Miranda’s most icy lines of dialogue in the film.

Tom Holland will tackle the Bard this spring when he plays Romeo in director Jamie Lloyd’s West End production of Romeo & Juliet.
Lloyd and Holland made the announcement this morning. Romeo & Juliet will run at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Saturday, May 11 through Saturday August 3. Additional casting, including Juliet, was not announced, nor whether the production will follow the path of other Lloyd hits – including the pared-down stagings of A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Betrayal with Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox and Zawe Ashton, to name two – with an eventual move to Broadway.
Holland, though best known for his leading role in the Spider-Man film franchise and, more recently, as the star of the Apple TV+ limited series The Crowded Room, actually got his show business start on the stage, when at age 11 he landed a supporting part in the West End production of Billy Elliot: The Musical.

Los Angeles, June 7 (Ians) English star Tom Holland, best known for playing Spiderman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, said that the psychological thriller ‘The Crowded Room’ was so intense that he was compelled to take an extended break from the spotlight to get his gears in order.
The ‘Spiderman’ MCU star started his career as a child actor when he took on the title role in ‘Billy Elliot: The Musical’ in London’s West End. Paul King, the director of the Paddington movies, is putting on his dancing shoes.
King has come aboard to direct Sony Pictures’ untitled Fred Astaire drama that has Tom Holland attached to star as the golden age film and dance star.
Amy Pascal, Rachael O’Conner, Ben Holden and Josh Hyams are producing.
Sony is keeping the logline details under the top hat, but it is known that the project centers on the relationship between Astaire and his sister, Adele Astaire. The two were inseparable for more than 20 years, moving out of a simple Midwestern vaudeville act in the early part of the 20th Century to Broadway and London’s West End in the 1920s. Adele Astaire was initially the face of the act, but eventually, Fred’s consummate stage skills eclipsed hers. Adam Driver may be the most notable former Marine to earn an Oscar nomination, but David Alvarez could be the first Tony winner turned infantryman to nab one. Spider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland on becoming his favourite superheroSpider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland on becoming his favourite superheroBob Strauss - Cineplex Magazine7/5/2017 1:50:00 Pm
The third time should, at least, be charming.
That’s because Tom Holland is playing the friendly neighborhood webslinger in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Exuberant and super-friendly, the 21-year-old English actor is the third person to play Marvel Comics’ most popular superhero on the big screen since the turn of the century. And if the overeager, sarcastic teen approach to Peter Parker that he introduced in last year’s Captain America: Civil War is maintained, we’ll have a much different wall crawler than with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s angstier interpretations.
“I tried to bring a lot of levity to the character, so at every opportunity I got I was trying to crack jokes and be the wise guy,” says Holland over the phone.

From the sensitive Tobey Maguire to the nerdy Andrew Garfield to the clumsy Tom Holland, Peter Parker/Spider-Man has evolved into the ultimate teenage, superhero misfit. And, as Sony’s top franchise, the web-slinger has experienced different rites of passage under the direction of Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man,” “Spider-Man 2,” “Spider-Man 3”), Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”), and Jon Watts (“Spider-Man Homecoming”).
But until Sony made a deal in 2015 to share the Spider-Man movie rights with Disney and Marvel Studios, the Marvel Comics superhero remained separate from the McU. That changed with the decidedly younger Holland making a guest appearance as Parker/Spidey in “Captain America: Civil War” (2016). Following his first solo stint in “Homecoming” (July 7th), Holland will appear in “Avengers: Infinity War” (May 4, 2018), followed by the sequel, “Homecoming 2” (2019).

Before landing his buzzed-about role as the crime-fighting webslinger in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland faced his fair share of adversaries. But instead of supervillains, Holland had to deal with real-life bullies.
“I had my rough patches,” Holland, 21, tells People in this week’s issue.
As a talented young dancer (he played the title role in a London run of Billy Elliot the Musical at age 12), Holland fielded harassment from peers throughout his younger years.
“There was times when I was bullied about dancing and stuff,” he says. “But you couldn’t hit me hard enough to stop me from doing it.

Hello and welcome back to our roundup of news stories from theatre, film, and television. Film The eagerly awaited “Spider-Man: Homecoming” opens in the UK this Wednesday and has been receiving generally positive reviews. Young British star Tom Holland (who looks positively old compared to his “Billy Elliot The Musical” era) apparently succeeds in carrying this latest installment in the Marvel action franchise. The all-swinging reboot began in earnest with “Spider-Man” in 2002. Toby Maguire was first put on the tight costume for three films before British actor Andrew Garfield picked up the adventure in “The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2” in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Though billed as a back-to-basics film, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is a long way from the low budget 70s era. Instead, the $175 million blockbuster follows epic battles as well as more relatable ones such as whether Peter should confess to having a crush on his classmate Liz, played by Laura Harrier. Whilst...

News Flash: Tom Holland is the best movie Spider-Man ever. He finds the kid inside the famous red onesie and brings out the kid in even the most hardened filmgoer. The last two Spidey epics had "Amazing" in the title, but let's face it – both films stirred more apathy than amazement. The only suspense came in wondering how long and hard a franchise could be milked. It may be a problem winning back the comic-book fans, but after that extended cameo in Captain America: Civil War and this new solo outing,...

Former dancer Tom Holland, who plays acrobatic, spider-powered 'Peter Parker' in the upcoming feature "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is featured in the latest issue of "Interview" magazine:
"My mom thought I could dance because I used to dance to this Janet Jackson song she'd play when I was a baby," said Holland.
"Then she would take me to a Saturday dance school. I used to go every week and got spotted by a scout, who suggested I audition for the role of 'Billy' in 'Billy Elliot the Musical'.
"I loved doing ballet. I trained for two years. I auditioned every six months for Billy Elliot and eventually I got the job.
"I'm very happy I had that training. It's been so valuable to my career, and I've used it on almost everything I've done since.

Chris here, with exciting Broadway adaptation news. Yes, we've maybe begun to move past eyerolling whenever our favorite movies are cashgrabbed into a stage musical and are occassionally excited about some prospects. The Devil Wears Prada seems like a more natural fit for Broadway (and long rumored). It also just landed some quite credible talent: composer Elton John and scribe Paul Rudnick.
If you're worried about an instant classic like Prada being bastardized, look no further than how Elton John turned Billy Elliot into both a financial and creative success on the stage. Paul Rudnick has given us such gay classics as Jeffrey, Addams Family Values, and In & Out, so don't expect the hilarity to be diminished either. While there is not an arrival date yet, the announcement of their involvement is all we need to confirm that this adaptation is really happening and will be a gay old time.

Elton John is no stranger to turning a hit movie into a hit musical. He’s done it twice before — with 1997’s The Lion King and 2008’s Billy Elliot: The Musical, both which claimed the Best Musical honors at the Tony Awards.
Now the 69-year-old singer will set his sights on The Devil Wears Prada — scoring a new musical based on both the 2003 Lauren Weisberger-novel and the hit 2006 film with lyricist and writer Paul Rudnick.
