Inspired by the rape/revenge sub-genre, this film is heavy on the rape and abrupt on revenge. Generally speaking, I have always had the suspicion that films like this are designed by their creators as an excuse to act out private fantasies. Not that any of these people would genuinely desire to hurt anyone, but like most people, I suspect these films are made to massage out the tension of a dark place they'd rather not acknowledge. Of course this has to be done on the pretense of selling the film as a sophisticated and nuanced commentary on violence.
The sequences of rape and torture throughout the film, while restrained somewhat in there explicitness by deliberate camera angles, are generally very thorough and graphic. One rape scene in particular reminds me of (and is perhaps even inspired by) the now infamous eleven minute rape scene found in Gaspar Noe's "Irreversible".
The acting is convincing enough, particularly by lead actress Victoria Witemburg, but there are some scenes in which the polish of the performances could do with a little buffing.
The film also suffers from inadequate lighting; a typical issue with films produced on a tight budget.
As far as the writing is concerned,"When Your Flesh Screams" follows the tried and true formula exploitation films have been using for decades to get away with their gratuitous depictions of misogyny and violence. Wrap it up with a nice revenge and recompense is paid. Some sections of the film appear superfluous and smack of filler to get the film to a feature length run time, but as for the event itself (because we all know why we watch these films to begin with), the scenes of violence accomplish what they wish to convey which is heartless brutality. I might say I even enjoyed a few scenes because like everyone else, I too have a dark place I'd rather not acknowledge.
