The label on the whiskey bottle Red has behind his seat reads "Holy Whatzit No 7 cheap-ass whiskey! - Red Label - for those times when the wallet is thin, the skull is thick and you're just not F'n kiddin'!"
The brother's hero car is a 1977 Toyota FJ40 named Bruce in real life as well as in the film. The name was inspired by both Spielberg's mechanical shark used in Jaws (which was named after his attorney) which functioned about as reliably as this car and by Batman's alter-ego, Bruce Wayne. Director R.E.Stevens' entire family, including his son-in-law Brian, the owner of the car are all big fans of both Jaws and Batman and call themselves the "Batsharks".
A prominent design theme used in the film is that the color green is nearly non-existent in any props, wardrobe or even locations throughout the first 2/3 of the film. The director emphasized that everything in front of the camera would lean yellow and red, symbolizing caution and stop. Michael wears a yellow shirt throughout this first part of the film and his brother wears a red overalls. This was further accentuated in the color grade which gradually became increasingly desaturated and favored those yellow/red and earthtones throughout the first 20 minutes until they reach the motel, at which point this color manipulation reaches its peak. By this time, no blue is seen in the sky either. By this time, the only green is Officer Zalena's green shoulder patch. During the night at the motel, the color blue is reintroduced and then the next morning, more natural colors are reintroduced to help re-establish the reality of Michael's experience. By this time, he adorns a bright green bow-tie, the only other green in the film and the sky is blue again.
The label on the locking bank bag reads "Loanstar United Ostrich Baron's Credit Union & Lone - DEPOSIT"
Character names played into the traffic light/driving theme of the film as well. Michael's brother is named Guy Botham, but everyone calls him Red and he represents 'stop'. The State Trooper who pulls them over in Arizona is named Zalena which means green in Croatia and of course she represents hope and 'go'ing.
