Syndey Sweeney is currently one of the most in-demand young actors generally. She has just recently come off the hit rom-com Anyone But You and horror pic Immaculate, but that doesn’t mean that the young actress is taking a rest. No, as things stand, Sweeney has decided to tackle yet another genre, as she has signed on to portray legendary American boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic produced by Black Bear. The movie is going to be presented to buyers in Cannes and it might be one of the biggest scoops of the festival this year.
In case you’re not familiar with the name, Christy Martin is a true legend of female boxing. Known as both “the Female Rocky” and “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” she was a legend of American female boxing in the 1990s and one of the most successful female boxers in history. She...

2023 marks my third year covering the National Film Festival For Talented Youth for Directors Notes and it may just be my favourite edition so far. It’s a festival built on celebrating the best in young filmmaking from around the globe and the work on show has impressed me time and time again. I think the most surprising aspect of the shorts this year is how assured they are, the filmmakers are all under the age of 24 but the work has an air of seasoned confidence to it. This may speak to the confluence of both the growing opportunities afforded to young filmmakers and also how accessible the tools of filmmaking have become. Below you can find our usual bumper list of recommendations of the films to catch at the festival this year which range from deeply personal documentaries through to stoner comedies about a ramen chef facing off against the grim reaper.

Although she is getting a reputation as a real life ‘tank girl’ due to an unfortunate string of poorly performing films, actress and producer Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment continues to develop the futuristic live-action feature "Tank Girl", for director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte ("As You Are"), based on the Dark Horse 1988 Brit comic book series, created by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett, featuring Robbie (again) as a wise-cracking skank:
"...'Tank Girl', aka 'Fonzie Rebecca Buckler' drives a tank, which is also her home.
"She undertakes a series of missions for a nebulous organization before making a serious mistake and being declared an outlaw for her sexual inclinations and her substance abuse.
"On the run, she shares sexy, psychedelic and surrealist misadventures with her close friend, 'Booga', a mutant kangaroo..."
"Tank Girl" was released as a live-action feature in 1995, directed by Rachel Talalay, starring Lori Petty, Ice-t and Naomi Watts.

What kind of friend are you? We all fall into certain friendship archetypes, whether we’re the responsible “parent” of the group, the instigator, or the one that never responds in the group chat. Sometimes we fill these archetype roles to bring out the best in our friend groups, but more often than not these roles are set in stone during our youth, before we define ourselves, and coalesce into something toxic and decidedly unfriendly.

A teenage boy becomes a sidekick for outlaw Robbie in this interesting 1930s-set action drama
A lonely kid in a 1930s Texas dustbowl town dreams of adventure. Then it all comes to life when a fugitive bank robber, badly wounded, shows up and hides out in the family barn. But this film switches the gender assumptions: the criminal is a woman, Allison Wells, played by the movie’s producer-star Margot Robbie, and her teenage protector is a boy: Eugene Evans, played by Finn Cole – and soon they’re hatching plans together, lovestruck Eugene having been assured by the wide-eyed Allison that the much-publicised death of an innocent bystanderarising from her last robbery was due to crossfire from the police.
This is an interesting twist on the Bonnie and Clyde template from screenwriting newcomer Nicolaas Zwart and director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, who was an award-winner at Sundance last year with his debut feature As You Are.

At age 23, Miles Joris-Peyrafitte won a Sundance Special Jury Prize for his first feature film, As You Are. Set in his Albany NY suburb during the ‘90s, it explored a Jules et Jim love triangle by way of hi-8 confessionals à la Rashomon intercut with anamorphic flashback footage of his own design. It was awesome. Now, three years later, Peyrafitte’s follow-up feature, Dreamland, has just premiered at Tribeca 2019. We sat down with the young director for an in-depth interview, linked below.

"If you see this woman - do not confront her!" Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for a drama titled Dreamland, from director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte (As You Are). A teenager's adventures as a bounty hunter takes an unexpected twist when he falls for a fugitive bank robber hiding out on his property. In Dreamland, Margot Robbie delivers a riveting performance as an outlaw during the Great Depression’s Dust Bowl who becomes involved with a young man as she seeks to evade the authorities. This originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and Brussels Fantastic Film Festival last year, and lands on Premium VOD this fall. Finn Cole also co-stars, with Travis Fimmel, Kerry Condon, Darby Camp, Garrett Hedlund, and Lola Kirke in this "beautifully shot coming-of-age story." Hot damn, this is a killer trailer! Totally love the vibe and the music and the setup and the feel of this whole thing.

According to Collider, Miles Joris-Peyrafitte has landed the job of helming the Tank Girl reboot. After making his feature debut with 2016’s As You Are, he’s already set to work with Robbie on upcoming crime drama Dreamland. The same report says that the movie is being eyed as a potential starring vehicle for Robbie, but the actress herself is waiting to see how the script turns out before committing to it. She will,...

Plot details for the science-fiction film are being kept under wraps, but Wang is adapting the feature based on Weinstein’s collection of short stories of the same name.
Dani Melia and Peter Saraf at Big Beach announced on Monday that they will produce the film along with Votiv’s Justin Lothrop. Brent Stiefel from Votiv will serve as an executive producer.
“Lulu and I have been friends for years now and we’re very excited to be collaborating with her on such an incredible project,” Lothrop said in a statement. “When we started on this journey with her, I don’t think we could have imagined a better partner than Big Beach, and we couldn’t be more pleased about working with them on this.

On November 1, the 2018 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate seven filmmakers and actors for their achievement in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews this week.
Less than a decade into her career, actress Amandla Stenberg has already enjoyed at least two breakthrough moments, from her heartbreaking turn as the ill-fated young tribute Rue in “The Hunger Games” to her life-changing leading role in the recent big screen adaptation of “The Hate U Give.” Based on Angie Thomas’ timely bestseller of the same name, George Tillman Jr.’s film is built on Stenberg’s capable shoulders, casting the actress as Starr Carter, a clever teenager forced to live in two very different worlds, both of which come crashing down after a horrific crime.
“She’s allowed to be so multidimensional in a way most black characters are not,” the actress said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “She is so nuanced and real.

2017-12-04T07:49:56-08:00Are These 'Stranger Things' Stars a Romantic Couple?
Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, two stars of Netflix's Stranger Things, are definitely a couple on screen. There have been hints, though, that Dyer and Heaton are into each other off screen, as well. The latest evidence came at a social event in London over the weekend, at which the pair showed up and posed for pictures together. They're not publicly admitting to a romance, but we're starting to think it's pretty obvious.
Via Us Weekly.
Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton continued to fuel romance rumors by stepping out together at the Burberry x Cara Delevingne Christmas bash in London on Saturday, December 2.
The pair posed for pictures in front of blue and magenta streams, which matched Dyer, who wore a funky magenta suede coat over a black-and-white polka dot outfit.

Looks like Dancing With the Stars partners Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Vanessa Lachey will remain professional despite claims they're not getting along.
On Wednesday, Chmerkovskiy apologized to Lachey on Twitter, after he skipped Monday night's DWTS due to what co-host Erin Andrews called a "personal issue." A source later told Et that he actually refused to rehearse with Lachey this past week due to issues between the two, leading dancer Alan Bersten to fill in for him.
But a source tells Et that despite all the drama, Chmerkovskiy and Lachey will continue to dance together on the hit ABC show.
"The producers wouldn't switch partners because two people aren’t getting along, it’s just par for the course," the source says. "Drama is expected and part of the show. When you train with someone for so many hours so intensely, tensions can run high -- for better or worse. In this case, the intensity...

Recently, Dusty provided me a golden opportunity: in connection with the release of Three-Piece Suite -- a remastering of some compositions from Gentle Giant's first three albums -- their media team offered an interview with Derek Schulman, lead singer for the group, and now a high-level record company executive. Knowing my love of Gentle Giant, Dusty offered the interview to me. There was no constraint on content, only on the number of questions (an even dozen). So, with thanks to Anne Leighton (of Anne Leighton Media), who coordinated, here is my interview with one of progressive rock's most iconic figures, both as an artist and as a rep:
1. There has been a sort of minor resurgence of things Gentle Giant, including the induction of the band into the Portsmouth Hall of Fame, and the imminent release of Three-Piece Suite, a collection of compositions from the first three Gentle Giant albums,...

Christian Petzold's The State I Am In (2000) and Christoph Hochhäusler's The City Below (2010) will be showing in September and October, 2017 on Mubi in most countries around the world.Christian Petzold (left) and Christoph Hochhäusler (right) on the set of Dreileben. Photo by Felix von Böhm.We meet in Christian Petzold’s office in Berlin-Kreuzberg. A giant wall of whispering books, almost like a Borgesian brain of fiction, encircles the table at which Christoph Hochhäusler, myself and the owner take place to discuss their films. The idea of the interview was to get Petzold’s take on Hochhäusler’s The City Below (2010) and Hochhäusler’s take on Petzold’s The State I Am In (2000). In the end, both filmmakers ended up talking about a lot more, as cinema for them has always been something that shines most brightly when remembering it, discussing it and loving it. The fictions proposed...
