A new episode of the Revisited video series has just arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that was just released last year, writer/director Joe Begos‘s holiday horror film Christmas Bloody Christmas – which got an 8/10 review from our own JimmyO that you can read Here and is available to watch on the Shudder streaming service. To find out what we had to say about Christmas Bloody Christmas one year after its release, check out the video embedded above!
Christmas Bloody Christmas has the following synopsis: It’s Christmas Eve and fiery record store owner Tori Tooms just wants to get drunk and party, until the robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and makes her night more than a little complicated. Santa Claus begins a rampant killing spree through the neon-drenched snowscape against a backdrop of drugs, sex, metal and violence,...

Closing out the first night of this year’s Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival, The Puppetman tossed me a nugget of nostalgia early in the film when the leads make a booze run and I recognized the upside-down sign of Buffalo’s On the Rox Liquors, where many an eventful weekend of my own started.
But that doesn’t come until after we see a man brutally murder his wife while his young daughter cowers, caged in a dark closet. He seems to be struggling with himself as he beats her with a frying pan and stabs her. And that is his defence in court, it wasn’t him, someone or something else was controlling his body. It doesn’t get him acquitted, but it does get him a nickname,...

Barbara Crampton is the queen of indie horror. Gracious and humble as she is, it’s a title she would most likely reject. These are precisely among the qualities that make her an icon: she’s a leader in the industry who makes it a point to bring others up, a gigantic star too nice to ever act like one. She’s the absolute best and deserves to be celebrated not just during #IndieHorrorMonth, but all year long.
From her earliest genre performances in movies like Re-Animator, Chopping Mall, and From Beyond, there was something special about Crampton. She could lend gravity and empathy to even the most outrageous scenario, from the notorious decapitated head scene in Re-Animator to the giant robot battles of Full Moon’s Robot Wars, to which she brings energy and spunk worthy of Marion Ravenswood. She could be a Bdsm-clad mad scientist in From Beyond...

There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.
One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

One of the many films that we're sad not to be seeing on the big screen at Tribeca film fest due to the current pandemic is the sophomore feature from director/writer Brea Grant, 12 Hour Shift. Most of us are familiar with Grant from her acting work in Beyond the Gates, After Midnight, and Dexter, and it's always nice to see a seasoned actor get behind the camera. And Grant, being no stranger to black comedy or horror, has whipped up what looks like an approrpiately gory and weirdly hilarious film. Nurse Mandy is desperate to make it through her double shift without incident. This is particularly hard to do when you’re an addict and are also involved in a black market...

Exclusive: Producer Shaked Berenson has teamed with former Dread Central Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan Barkan to launch the new genre distribution label The Horror Collective. The banner will be under Berenson’s production/distribution outfit Entertainment Squad and Barkan will head the venture which plans to release 10-12 films per year.

It will also finance and produce original content. The outfit’s inaugural film will be Elza Kephart’s Slaxx, which was the first project financed Entertainment Squad and will be released by The Horror Collective and enter the festival circuit in Q1 2020. Berenson financed and executive produced the Slaxx with long collaborator, Anne-Marie Gélinas of Ema Films.

One of my favorite parts of the Halloween season is listening to seasonal music, be it classics like “Grimm Grinning Ghosts” from Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride or familiar tracks from horror movies like Alice Cooper’s “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Hell, I’ll even do deep cuts like Frank Vinci’s “Just What I’ve Been Looking For” from Sleepaway Camp or Gowan’s “Moonlight Desires,” most recently used in WolfCop. I’m lucky enough to have friends that make me Halloween mixes, too, giving me plenty to listen to all month long.
My new favorite Halloween album, though, is a little unconventional and a whole lot of fun. Sean Keller, a musician, actor, and screenwriter (Hulu’s All That We Destroy), has recorded the ultimate Halloween mix this year: The Killer Sounds of Halloween, 13 original songs from 13 fake bands.

Over thirty new shorts across three sold-out, big-screen showcases, and an entire weekend of horror and genre-themed fun – this year’s FrightFest was one of the biggest ever for short form content. From comedies to mood-pieces, stop-motion to flat-out slashers, it was a truly diverse bunch, covering a wide spectrum of filmmakers and countries of origin. Here’s the very best of them:
There’s an awful lot to love in Stefan Georgiou’s cockney-gothic chiller The Dead Ones – a clever spin on the ghost-world formula that I won’t spoil here. Packed out with four terrific performances and a tricky, brilliantly moody plot that more than earns its longer 20-minute run time.
Adele Vuko’s edgy Aussie comedy The Hitchhiker might sound a little genre bare-bones, running off its basic title and set-up – three best friends picking up a scary-looking hitcher while on a midnight drive to a music...

Tom Botchii's feature film debut, Artik, will have its world premieres at Popcorn Frights Film Fest in Florida this week. Then Artik will be released in Us cinemas on September 6th, and on VOD/Blu-ray on September 10th. Yesterday, Epic Pictures and Dread released the new trailer and fresh keyart for Botchii's flick. If you think the keyart style looks familiar that is because it came from poster artist Christopher Shy who illustrated the poster for Panos Cosmatos' Mandy. A comic book obsessed serial killer teaches his son how to get away with a series of brutal murders until the boy befriends a mysterious man who threatens to expose everything. Artik stars Chase Williamson,...

Snakes On A Plane collides head first with Straight Outta Compton in this wildly funny, gloriously gruesome creature feature parody about a rap group trying to save the city from a giant snake. Director Hank Braxton adds another monster movie to his repertoire, following up his killer polar bear flick Unnatural, starring Django Unchained’s James Remar, this time with a giant mutant serpent slithering round Los Angeles and wreaking hilarious havoc.

A hard-partying pack of teens come across a mysterious vintage game and can’t resist giving it a try. They each place a thumb on it and suddenly, they all get pricked, their blood running and pooling into the game. A clock lights up, counting down. At the end of the countdown, one of the teens dies – in a rather spectacular way. The countdown begins again. The game instructs the teens to kill or be killed. Whatever the case, someone will die by the time each countdown ends, and it can either be one of them, or… well, anyone else. Revered eighties horror icon Barbara Crampton is as popular now as she’s ever been, largely due to the next generation of horror directors who came of age watching her earlier work who are now casting her in their own genre offerings. Guest of honour at this year’s Grimmfest in Manchester, Crampton also cropped in three of the films screening there, including a welcome revisit of the aforementioned Stuart Gordon classic in which she initially made her name, the intriguingly-structured cabin in the woods horror Dead Night, and the hilarious and gore-filled Puppet Master reboot, entitled Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich.
We had to change to grab some time with Crampton during the festival – she also participated in some fun post-screening Q&As for her films – where we talked about the legacy of her work from decades back, and the more hands-on approach she enjoys taking with some of her recent films.

Barbara Crampton takes on a devilishly fun role in Dead Night, now in select theaters and on VOD courtesy of Dark Sky Films. Also starring Brea Grant and Aj Bowen, the movie follows a family (parents played by Grant and Bowen) that heads to a remote cabin in Oregon and stumbles across a mysterious woman, played by Barbara Crampton, who is passed out in the snow. Unfortunately for the family, this mysterious woman is anything but helpless and the night quickly turns deadly.
I caught up with Barbara Crampton to talk to her about taking on this fun and different role, reteaming with Brea Grant and Aj Bowen, what she looks for when taking on a new genre role, and she also talks about her upcoming roles in Reborn and the Castle Freak remake:

The film is now exclusively on the rad, all-horror streaming service Shudder, and reunites Chase Williamson and Fabianne Therese, both of John Dies at the End, among other hot indie films. I spoke to Skipper on the challenges of making Sequence Break, his new feature in which Williamson plays Oz, am introverted arcade game repair man and designer who finds himself way too connected to a particular game...
