Justifiably obscure

Warning: Spoilers
I was more than usually interested in this because it was shot amidst the late 1980s San Francisco punk scene, and I was in that scene (although not involved with this film, or even aware of it being made that I can remember). Yet even given that personal curiosity value, AND loving schlock horror movies, this was a chore to actually sit through. It's got the qualities of many shot-on-video, meant-for-the-VHS-market horror movies of the era, but unlike such camp classics of that little niche such as "Boarding House," it's just tongue-in-cheek enough-- and just well-made enough--to avoid providing many unintentional laughs. But not tongue-in- cheek or well-made enough to be actually witty or stylish. It's just mildly snarky in serving up turgid doses of blood and breasts (if you don't think those things can be dull in themselves, then this movie will be a revelation for you), with lots of talky boredom between.

The Nuns play in a couple scenes (as fictional band "Disease"--there's also a fictional recreational drug called "DZS"--but frankly that's just bad New Wave music. The leads have a sort of soap opera-actor sheen to them that's in contrast to the variably campier/more inept supporting turns. Technically, the movie suggests some personnel had some expertise (probably in theater lighting, maybe doing low-end music videos etc.), but not any feature-film experience to clue them into how to pace scenes, let alone a whole movie.

I kicked up my rating one star because (SPOILER SPOILER) the mutant-monster effect at the end is sort of cool if not exactly convincing. But otherwise this is a curio that's not really much fun, beyond the sheer novelty of seeing something that basically went unseen for nearly 30 years-- supposedly the only exposure it ever got until now was (weirdly) VHS release in Poland.

At least now I know what happened to Kuato

Well... firstly the stuff just shot on video looks terrible. The acting, looks like acting. Some of the special effects, particularly the coroner, was terrific.

It was a very good premise, I think it just lacked sufficient funding to make it... viewable. Nice try though.

Something is roaming around 80s San Francisco punk scene feeding on... brains!

Warning: Spoilers
A whiskey stream of consciousness review.

My Amazon parrot Squatcho picked this one out and he hated it. I however was pleasantly surprised considering the grade D budget and that it is shot on video with poor transfer quality. A serial killer stalks the seedy San Francisco drug and punk rock underworld. It is feasting on brains, sucking them out through its victim's eye sockets. Plenty of quirky and sometimes low brow humor such as the Forensic scientist who performs the brain autopsy has a lazy, sleepy eye...nice casting choice. As you would expect, there is a lot of overacting and silly dialogue, but also some surprisingly well acted moments. Most notably, there is some pretty good chemistry between Jean Michaelson (Kate Alexander) and Inspector Alonzo Bernardo (Jonathan Zeichner). Who would have thought the trust and budding romance would work in this sorta cheese?! Love the appearance of the seminal punk band The Nuns who perform as "Disease". Not on too many lists, but they should be. Would have loved to see them with Flipper back in the day. Overall fun movie that will at least keep your interest and you may even find it amusing, including the ridiculous ending. Without giving it away, they might call this one "Kuato's revenge". My only regret (or blessing) is that it doesn't appear the filmmakers made too many other films.

Slurped down with a dram of John J. Bowman. Cheers!

Not so bad it's good, just plain old bad.

Haha, wow - this was terrible. Sadly I can't remember why I had this on my watchlist, but at least whoever suggested it can feel safe from being punched, lol.

This is a shining example of the fact, that it takes more to make a movie than to just point a camera at something and press 'record'.

The actual visuals are terrible, the editing is horrible and don't even get me started on the soundtrack - that's beyond horrible. The acting is as bad as the rest, so there is nothing to come for there either. On top of that it is just boring beyond belief.

One (very very very) small saving grace, is the monster, which is shown in the last 5 minutes or so (any effect before that is not worth your time either). The monster is not good, but better than expected from this excuse for a movie. Those 5 minutes are all you "need" to see.

In short: Even if you like cheap and terrible 80's low-budget horror, there are LOTS of better choices than this.

... you have been warned.

godinamachine28 March 2023
HEY EVERYBODY ITS ME (4) and today we review .... "as the night feeder turns " .... the movie !!!

Thought this LOOKS like a soap opera that your grandma would watch and you would have to join during one of those day you skipped and she was the only one that could pick you up from school with that fake tummy ache ....its actually not ....

sure i know the sets look like a soap opera .... and yes the acting is kind of like a soap opera .... BUT no one works at a hospital.....crap no wait never mind ... morgues count as surgery .......YUP this is a soap opera that grandmas watch dang it .... night feeder of our lives ....

well for a filmed on a sound stage with the same equipment of a soap opera etc .... it comes across ehhhh kind of low end feeling to me ... the creature FX are great (in general the FX are solid) LOVED those and REALLY should have had WAY more of that going on than the story they were going with just ...stuff going on lol.... i mean "writing " okay ...lol... but should have had the ending like half way through then REALLY went up to level 11 on action and crazy crap in there .... BUT nope ...

kudos to them for making this happen and honestly if i had access to the sound stages and all that i would probably throw something together as well .... so A for effort .....

but over all imma have to give it a d- at best

2/10

oh and 3 minutes and 30 seconds in that lady is LITERALLY THE DEFFINITION OF WHY DRUGS ARE BAD ....

Low Budget, Shot on Video GOLD

"Night Feeder" should not be as good as it is. Filmed on video by artists who previously only worked on New Wave music videos in the San Francisco music scene of the 1980s, this tale of murder, drug use and the post-punk underground drips with atmosphere, ambition and a bizarre verisimilitude that makes the gore-soaked ended all the more shocking.

The plot revolved around a series of murders where the victims have one of their eyes removed and most of their brain sucked out through the hole left behind. Somehow, a street drug and a New Wave band (both named DZS, pronounced disease) are involved in the killings.

The plot is almost secondary to the atmosphere though. Filmed in actual clubs and with actual fans, this is a snapshot of a scene that existed and will never exist again in the late 80s. An actual band "The Nuns" plays the roll of DZS and though most of the actors are clearly amateurs, even the strangest performances ring true thanks to the odd nature of the scene itself.

Lastly, the gore and creature effects were overseen by an effects designer who had previously worked on David Cronenberg's "The Fly". One of his teachers was a producer on the film, so he agreed to help out.

If you like 1980s shot on video horror, this is one of the best I have seen. The fact that it was previously only available on VHS in Poland for the last 27 years is a travesty. Thank you Bleeding Skull Video for making this amazing film finally available for everyone to experience.
