Crevecoeur Hall and the Mortmaigne family feature in The Dead of Winter (2010). It is where Sergeant Hathaway grew up, and where his father was the gardener, Phillip. The elderly Philip Hathaway is introduced in season 9 of Inspector Lewis suffering from dementia and unable to remember his son.
This takes place in the summer of 1967. A radio broadcast announcing what was to become known as the "Six-Day Arab-Israeli War" which began on June 5th, 1967, the same as the first day of the episode.
During a search scene in woodland, characters are heard to say "It's in the trees. It's coming.". This is a reference to the 1957 British horror film "Night of the Demon". Kate Bush also used the same quote in the opening lines of her "Hounds of Love" track.
Bright's story about his encounter with the tiger in India starts with a reference to "that thugee business in Pankot in '35." This is a direct reference to the plot of Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom."
The "beast of Binsey" mentioned by Strange has a real life counterpart in the Oxfordshire area, where a puma is said to roam the woods. It's known as the "beast of Burford."
