Can evil really be cured?

Warning: Spoilers
When the Red Dwarf crew pass a small moon which is home to a research station they pay it a visit hoping to be able to use their facilities to repair Starbug's broken left thruster. The facility a centre where research into curing the most evil people was undertaken by Professor Telford. His patients are Hitler, Stalin, Vlad the Impaler and Messalina… it is explained that they aren't the 'originals' but clones who have their memories. The crew initially feel a little uncomfortable but these 'evil' people do genuinely appear to have been cured… Lister even ends up jamming with Hitler! Shortly after Starbug is fixed the crew learn that a micro-planet is going to destroy the facility shortly; they must decide whether the Evils should be saved or left to die. Before they can do anything they collapse, somebody has drugged, or otherwise incapacitated them. They wake in nightmarish situations… clearly somebody is evil; but which one?

Series Twelve gets off to a good start here; the plot is classic 'Red Dwarf' and it features some impressively clever moments. The opening scene, featuring the crew trying to play poker, was amusing and things only got better when they get to the facility. The cured 'Evils' are funny… particularly the rather camp Adolph 'call me Dolphy' Hitler. I especially liked the fact that we are given a scientific explanation even if it is obviously science-fiction… a later twist means even that doesn't matter. The situations each of the crew members face after being incapacitated nicely fits in with what we already know about them… what happened to Rimmer was probably the cleverest as it makes sense that somebody who is technically dead would fear being buried or cremated alive. While the final twist about who was evil wasn't a total surprise there were details that were far from obvious. The special effects may not be the greatest but that isn't really a problem as it just means new episodes don't look that different from the old BBC era episodes. Overall this was an impressive episode with plenty of laughs and a good plot.

Cured

A fun opening episode for series 12 of Red Dwarf. After a game of poker where the boys discover that the cat prefers to play on his own they go aboard Starbug and find an old scientific research station owned by United America, a group who went to war against everyone to end all wars in the 23rd century.

The research facility found a cure for evil and they find pods of reconstituted descendants of famous evil people from the past that were cured apart from Rupert Murdoch.

Professor Telford invites the crew of Red Dwarf to see these cured former tyrants Stalin, Hitler, Vlad The Impaler and Valeria Messalina.

Pretty soon Lister is jamming with Hitler but the boys find themselves in danger as one of them is still not cured.

The special effects are not that great but the pacing was rather good, the crew now seem to be more comfortable with each other, it was zany and it is weird to see the character of Hitler has popped in several episodes of Red Dwarf.

More clever than funny

The crew discover a space station with some interesting individuals kept in storage.

I enjoyed this one in parts for some quite clever concepts, particularly in relation to the Cat's personality, but I mostly struggled with the humour.

The plot was okay, with some very predictable moments and some nice touches in relation to the theme of psychopathy. It also has some good character moments for the Cat, showing some very familiar behaviour that should be recognisable to anyone who have ever owned a cat.

This was another episode where the humour falls way behind the plot and episode and themes. I found most jokes mildly amusing but there was nothing that prompted involuntary laughter.

All performances were to the usual high standard with Danny-John Jules and Craig Charles standing out with having the better of the material.

I accept the fact that comedy is subjective and anyone to whom the humour does appeal to will probably enjoy it very much.

Red Dwarf on top form

This is a clever episode, funny, and with no "fat" -- everything is essential to the story.

Can evil be cured? A nice sci-fi topic, and handled very well here, with interesting reactions from the Dwarf crew and a strong ending.

I thought season X was good, season XI was better; XII is off to a promising start.

Doug is back...

"Cured" feels like a return to form for Doug Naylor. This and the subsequent episodes bear out a pattern of relatively disappointing series (7,9,11) interrupted by series that gel (8 (yes 8), 10, 12). The density of original humor trumps other aspects in each. I would say this might mirror business, or lack thereof, in the co-creator's personal life. The characteristic, rapid, effective one-liners come as fast as those in the first three seasons of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. In the case of the latter, the last three seasons were bombs that ruined the show's reputation. With Dwarf, one trepidatiously approaches each new series, but in the end, the on-again off-again nature of exemplar Dwarf humor, by series, facilitates one's embracing the good years that much the more. The specifics of "Cured" are of less import than the quality of jibes therein, which is smegging awesome.

Warning: Spoilers
The ending of this episode was the crowning glory, I'm surprised they didn't call Rimmer as psycho but maybe his feelings for cowardice making him sane! Anywho the ending where the cat employs his poker face and un-empathetically kills the professor was brilliant, the whole episode was very well done.
