YouTube has concluded that its investments in original programming should have a home on the free, ad-supported side — not just tucked behind a paywall.
In a shift in strategy, the Google-owned video platform said that starting next year it will move to make all of its new original programming available for free for anyone to watch. With the change, YouTube is moving toward more mainstream celebrity-driven and creator-based reality fare, while it will continue to greenlight scripted productions.
Until now, YouTube Originals have mainly been available on its YouTube Premium subscription service, although YouTube also has expanded the shows and movies it makes available on an ad-supported basis.
“As we look to 2019, we will continue to invest in scripted programming and shift to make our YouTube Originals ad supported to meet the growing demand of a more global fanbase,” a YouTube rep said in a statement. “This next phase...

Seemingly out of nowhere, YouTube Premium moved forward last week with the sequel to Logan Paul’s dystopian feature The Thinning -- a project that was put on hold 10 months ago after the 23-year-old notoriously vlogged a suicide victim in Japan. YouTube justified the decision as being made in fairness to the cast and crew of The Thinning: New World Order -- as well as to fans of the film franchise.
Now, PewDiePie -- another top YouTube star who saw the cancellation his Premium series, Scare PewDiePie, in the wake of objectionable behavior -- is decrying YouTube’s decision to premiere Paul’s project while his own remains shelved. “It’s kind of amazing how a billion dollar company can be so inept at leadership,” Kjellberg said in a recent video on his channel, which is -- for now -- the most-subscribed hub on all of YouTube. “If you want to be taken seriously,...

In a 2015 interview with Business Insider, then-rising Vine star and vlogger Logan Paul said that he wanted to be “the biggest entertainer in the world.”
“That’s my deal,” he said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to get that.”
Two years later, he was making international headlines, though probably not how he had imagined. While in Japan recording his “Adventures in Tokyo” vlogs, Paul and his friends found the body of a man who had committed suicide in the Aokigahara forest. He uploaded the video to his YouTube channel. At the time, he had 15 million subscribers.
A day and over 6 million views later, the video was taken down and Paul became a pariah on social media, accused of trivializing suicide for web traffic as many demanded that YouTube take action and suspend his channel. Instead, the platform removed Paul from their Preferred Partners and YouTube Red programs. Most recently,...

Logan Paul’s YouTube Originals projects are on “indefinite hold,” YouTube executives confirmed at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday — but they would not say that the platform had cut ties with him permanently and did not rule out working with him in the future.
YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl and head of original programming Susanne Daniels told reporters that when incidents arise involving YouTube talent, what’s most important is to “protect the community” of YouTube creators, advertisers, and viewers.
“We believe [Paul] made unfortunate missteps,” Kyncl told reporters. “Actions should speak louder than words and Logan has the opportunity to prove that.”
After uploading a tone-deaf and offensive video shot in Japan’s “suicide forest” last month, Paul’s appearances in the upcoming new season of the YouTube Originals series “Foursome” and a sequel to the 2016 film “The Thinning” were canceled. Meanwhile, the YouTube star has taken...

Last week, Felix 'PewDiePie' Kjellberg took a moment to mourn the loss of his YouTube Red series, Scare PewDiePie, which YouTube cancelled last month in the wake of a series of anti-Semitic jokes on Kjellberg's channel, and which was supposed to premiere last Thursday, he said.
Kjellberg shared an image for the second season of the series on Twitter, which features the subtitle 'Multiplayer' and sees Kjellberg squaring off against friend and fellow YouTuber Sean ‘JackSepticEye’ McLoughlin. The first season of Scare PewDiePie featured Kjellberg navigating real-life horror video game scenarios designed to terrify him. It was produced by Kjellberg’s former network partner, Maker Studios, as well as Skybound Entertainment.

If you thought the accusations of anti-semitism, the consequential severed relationships with Disney and YouTube, and the self-admission of his amateur comedic ability was going to have a dramatic effect on the types of videos Felix Kjellberg uploads to his all-time most-viewed and most-subscribed YouTube channel, you were wrong.
Kjellberg’s latest upload to his more than 53-million-subscribers-strong PewDiePie channel features the blonde-haired, blue-eyed Swedish 27-year-old (now both famous and infamous) star cracking a joke about how he’s the superficial platonic ideal of the Third Reich before killing Hitler in some Sniper Elite gameplay with a kill shot to the genitalia. The joke here is that’s killing the historical figure is the only way PewDiePie can redeem himself from his ill-received comedy he still claims was taken way out of context.

Two days after he was dropped from his Disney-owned partner network Maker Studios and saw his YouTube Red series Scare PewDiePie cancelled, Swedish gamer Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg is responding to his critics. The number-one YouTube star has posted an 11-minute video in which he responds to the Wall Street Journal's allegations of anti-semitism in his videos and comments on the relationship between "Internet personalities" and the media.
PewDiePie does use small pockets of his response video to apologize who may have been upset or offended by the anti-Semitic allegations levied against him. About his now-infamous "death to all Jews, subscribe to Keemstar" prank and other indiscretions, he lamented he is a "rookie comedian" who doesn't always make the right decision.
Most of his video, however, is reserved for criticism of what he called "old-school media," a group he says "does not like internet personalities because they’re scared of us.

The biggest story on the online video industry’s collective mind is the recent controversy surrounding the headline-making YouTube star PewDiePie. After a Wall Street Journal report cited nine of the Swedish gamer’s videos that featured “anti-Semitic jokes or Nazi imagery,” his partner network Maker Studios (which is owned by Disney) opted to drop him. Shortly after that decision was made, YouTube chose to cancel Scare PewDiePie, an original series that was heading into its second season on YouTube Red.

Disney and its subsidiary Maker Studios have dropped Swedish YouTube star Felix Kjellberg, Aka PewDiePie, from its roster one month after the gamer posted a video showing two men laughing as they held up a sign reading: “Death to all Jews.”
In a video from January 11, since removed, Kjellberg filmed his shocked reaction as the two men unfurled the sign, which he had paid them to do. The following week, Kjellberg posted an apology, repeating the hateful rhetoric and criticizing the media for not understanding that he was joking. In a January 22 video, also since removed, he reacts to a video of a Jesus character saying a popular alt-right trolling phrase, “Hitler did nothing wrong.” The Wall Street Journal has segments of the videos.

Felix ‘PewDiePie’ Kjellberg, YouTube’s most-subscribed star, has been dropped by his multi-channel network, Disney’s Maker Studios, in the wake of several YouTube videos posted to his channel comprising anti-Semitic jokes and Nazi imagery. In response, YouTube has also axed the second season of Kjellberg’s YouTube Red series, Scare PewDiePie, and has removed his channel from Google Preferred -- a program that aggregates YouTube's top creators into packages for advertisers, a YouTube spokesperson confirmed to Tubefilter.
The controversy all began last month with a now-deleted video in which Kjellberg showcases Fiverr -- a startup where users can pay freelancers $5 (or more) to perform any variety of tasks. Kjellberg found two men in India who will write any message on a piece of wood and dance around for $5. Kjellberg tasked them to hold up a sign that said 'Death To All Jews,' and they complied.

As we noted yesterday, Swedish YouTube star PewDiePie decided to take a short break from YouTube while he filmed the second season of his YouTube Red series Scare PewDiePie in Los Angeles. Now, with that shoot wrapped, PewDiePie has returned home and returned to YouTube.
In his first new video in more than a week (his weekly schedule usually includes multiple videos), PewDiePie used one of his tattoos to discuss the topic of emotions. Specifically, he mentioned how the tattoo on his right arm, which shows the typically-upbeat anime character Astro Boy in a downtrodden pose, shows that one’s emotions can be hidden beneath a shinier exterior. It’s a relevant story to tell, given PewDiePie’s struggles with his recent experiment in daily vlogging (which caused his brief hiatus from YouTube).

When he traveled to Los Angeles in order to film the second season of his YouTube Red series Scare PewDiePie, Swedish gamer Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg said he would use daily vlogs to document his adventures in the City of Angels. Instead, the stress of his busy schedule took an unfortunate toll on his psyche, and after completing 14 of his 22 planned vlogs, he decided to cancel his initial plan and take a brief break from YouTube.
PewDiePie’s vlogging series carried the seemingly nonsensical title “Birdabo,” and in the parts of it he did complete, he showcased the off-set portions of his westward trip. At the same time, he was far away from home and the pressure that a daily vlogging schedule requires turned out to be more mentally taxing than he expected. “I’m just really sad about it,” he said in the video announcing his break. “I hope you understand.

YouTube has remained rather mum on the success of YouTube Red thus far. But during her keynote address at VidCon this evening, CEO Susan Wojcicki offered a glimpse into the success of the initiative. Wojcicki said that more than half of all watch time for Red is taking place on mobile devices -- suggesting the social buzz surrounding its original programming is loud. A Trip to Unicorn Island earned more Twitter impressions when it premiered, YouTube says, than Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, House of Cards, and True Detective.
Wojcicki also noted that Scare PewDiePie, a reality series featuring YouTube’s most-subscribed star, boasted audiences that rival the top shows on cable. To this end, Scare PewDiePie is one of three series being renewed for a second season. YouTube is also bringing back Foursome -- AwesomenessTV’s high school dating drama starring Jenn McAllister, as well as an as-yet-untitled movie with Smosh...

This year’s Primetime Emmy Awards will feature an expanded slate of short form categories, and with the awards show’s voting period now open, digital media companies are looking to cash in. In particular, online video network Maker Studios, which produces some of the most popular web series on YouTube and beyond, recently made its Emmys pitch with a full-page “for your consideration” ad in the print version of The Hollywood Reporter.
In its ad, Maker calls out several of the shows it has produced over the past year, including Scare PewDiePie, Pugatory, and long-running stalwart Epic Rap Battles of History. “Yo #emmys you around?” reads a post on the network’s Instagram feed. “For your consideration…”
The new categories, which include Outstanding Short Form Series — Variety, Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Series — Comedy or Drama, and Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Series — Comedy or Drama, seem like the perfect way to represent digital producers at the Emmys, but the Maker Studios’ and Fullscreens of the world will have plenty of competition. At the Creative Arts Emmys, for example, the Original Interactive Program category has tended to showcase a mix of digitally-native programs and online companions for TV shows.

Digital platforms are not shy when it comes to advertising their original programs. Finding those shows, however, is a trickier proposition -- and it’s not always easy.
On February 10th, several months after its launch, YouTube Red launched its first pieces of original content. Lilly Singh isn’t the only YouTube star who has recently toured the TV talk show circuit. Like Singh, Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg stars in a new original program on YouTube Red, and he too has taken to TV to promote his work. Leading up to the release of his series Scare PewDiePie, he appeared on both Today and Conan to discuss his status as the world’s most popular YouTube star.
PewDiePie has appeared on TV before (he hung out with Stephen Colbert last September), and in all his televised appearances, he has come off as a cool customer. The buttoned-down behavior he displays as he calmly explains his world to Conan O’Brien may not match the loud personality he puts forth online, but he is a good ambassador for his community, and for that, he deserves praise. As he told Conan and Andy Richter during their chat, "It's all about having fun.

YouTube Red has launched its first four original programs, and it will not slow down its output. The $10-per-month subscription service launched last October by YouTube is now home to films and web series led by digital stars Lilly Singh, Rooster Teeth, Meg DeAngelis, and PewDiePie. It has also announced its upcoming slate of original programs, which includes newly-revealed shows from Gigi Gorgeous and AwesomenessTV.
The program included in YouTube Red’s initial lineup are A Trip To Unicorn Island, a documentary that follows Lilly “iiSuperwomanii” Singh during a recent tour; Lazer Team, a film from Rooster Teeth that was funded via Indiegogo; Dance Camp, an AwesomenessTV production starring Meg DeAngelis; and Scare PewDiePie, a series that puts the world’s most popular YouTube star into real-life horror scenarios. Viewers with YouTube Red subscriptions will be the first ones to experience these shows, but some of them will ultimately run on other platforms.
