In 1894 psychologist Nathan Appleby and his photographer wife Charlotte move from London to the family farm in Somerset, where Nathan's mother Victoria is ill. During the summer solstice Victoria dies when a strange presence enters her room and the young couple take over the farm. Local vicar Matthew Denning asks for Nathan's help when his sixteen year old daughter Harriet is subject to strange compulsions, claiming to take her orders from the late Abel north, a suspected killer whose voice is one of several on phonograph records. When Harriet's actions become more alarming, involving attempted murder, Nathan turns to hypnotism to literally rid the girl of her demons.
