After appearing on the children's TV series "Barney & Friends" (2002–2004), Lovato played 'Mitchie Torres' in the musical TV film "Camp Rock" (2008) and its sequel "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam" (2010).
"This Is Me" was her debut single and duet with Joe Jonas, which peaked at number nine on the 'Billboard Hot 100' chart. After signing with Hollywood Records, Lovato released her pop rock debut album, "Don't Forget" (2008), which debuted at number two on the 'Billboard 200' chart .
Its follow-up, "Here We Go Again" (2009), debuted at number one in the US, while its title track reached number 15 on the 'Hot 100'. Her third studio album, "Unbroken" (2011), experimented with pop and R&b and spawned platinum-certified single "Skyscraper". Lovato has sold over 24 million records in the United States.

“Mamma Mia,” here we go again again.
Four years after sequel film “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” wowed with a soaring finale musical sequence and turned back the clock to see just how the iconic foursome of Meryl Streep’s Donna and her three potential baby daddies came to be, star Colin Firth teased that he would return for a third film in a heartbeat.
“I think it could happen,” Firth said during “Good Morning America” on May 5. “If you manage to make a second one, I guess you can make a third, a fourth, and a fifth. It was already a miracle.”
He added, “And if people want it, I would do it just to see my friends again on some beautiful island.”

It’s official: this is the summer of Abba. The blockbuster Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again brought the spectacle of Cher belting “Fernando.” That probably sent you back to the original Mamma Mia — yes, even the scene where Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan duet on “Sos.” Yet that somehow that just leaves you hungry for more. The Swedish pop savants ruled 1970s radio, invaders coming from the land of the ice and snow to become the top-selling act of their time. Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog...

Musicals are mounting a major return to a platform near you — nearly a dozen are set to release by the end of the year. Why are there are so many lined up? It’s both flukes of timing and market forces. Some are big-budget studio efforts held back until the pandemic was “over,” others are smaller scale films, some are strictly online events. Not all will make it to theaters, especially after Jon M. Chu’s movie adaptation “In the Heights”, a less-well-known Broadway musical from “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, nabbed stellar reviews but disappointed in theaters after launching the Tribeca Festival. How it performed on HBO Max is less clear.
But there’s still a lot of Miranda — among other musical talents — in the 2021 pipeline. See below. Here’s what’s going on.
1. Studios are chasing pre-branded hits.
Despite the disaster of “Cats” ($75.5 million worldwide), global smashes like “Mamma Mia!...

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “The Favourite,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild kudos. While our fifth contender – “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that these awards often overlook one of the Academy Awards nominees. However, the Cdg has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner.
Our Oscar frontrunner “The Favourite” as well as third and fourth-ranked “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” contend for best period costumes as do “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Besides the second-ranked Oscar contender “Black Panther,” the fantasy film nominees are “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Legendary Entertainment has been making a habit lately of snatching up Marvel actors for the upcoming Dune remake. Following on the heels of Monday’s news that Dave Bautista of Guardians of the Galaxy fame had landed the role of “Beast” Rabban, The Wrap reports that Stellan Skarsgård of Thor and The Avengers – not to mention everything from Nymphomaniac to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – has joined the cast of Denis Villeneuve’s next film.
Skarsgård and Bautista will be starring opposite the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson in what’s planned to be the first of at least two movies based on the popular Frank Herbert novel. Though there’ve been multiple attempts already to bring the sci-fi saga to the big screen (one of which was even the subject of the acclaimed 2013 documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune), the only successful attempt remains the divisive 1984 version directed by David Lynch,...

“The Greatest Showman” was met by a so-so critical reception, but the P.T. Barnum biopic starring Hugh Jackman has taken on a life of its own. In addition to grossing $435 million and picking up Best Picture and Best Actor nods in the Golden Globes’ Musical or Comedy category, the film outsold every other album released by year — and it isn’t even close. Not only was it the only album to sell more than a million copies, but its 1.3 million sales more than doubled that of its closest competitor, the soundtrack to “A Star Is Born,” which sold 525,000 albums.
That figure comes with a caveat, however, as the Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga version of the musical and its accompanying Ost weren’t released until early October. Still, it’s notable that the two highest-selling albums of the year were both soundtracks, a development that suggests musical-obsessed moviegoers are more...

In a music world where streaming services now overwhelmingly rule the market, who still actually bothers to buy albums? One obvious answer: people who also buy movie tickets.
BuzzAngle Music’s newly released data for 2018 shows that the two top selling albums of the year were the soundtracks for “The Greatest Showman” and “A Star Is Born.” By BuzzAngle’s calculations, which include an accumulation of individual track sales as well as pure album units, “Greatest Showman” was the sole million seller of the year, racking up 1.3 million in album sales. “A Star Is Born,” which was only released in time for fourth-quarter sales, came in second, with 525,000 albums.
The competition wasn’t even close in the album sales category. The year’s third biggest selling album, Justin Timberlake’s “Man of the Woods,” lagged far behind with 377,000.

Takings still on the slide despite a decent effort from local fare.
After a sharp decline at the Italian box office from 2016 to 2017, the trend continued in 2018. For the first 11 months of the year, total box office was down 6.3% on the same period in 2017 and down 18.7% on 2016.
New films from big Italian auteurs such as Paolo Sorrentino’s Them (Loro) and Matteo Garrone’s Dogman did not help much, even though the box-office share of national product rose to 22% from 2017’s 16% — at the expense of the Us quota, which fell from 66% to 59%.

Where most European countries have struggled, UK box office is on the up.

U.K. cinema admissions are hurtling toward their highest level in nearly 50 years, fueled by a diverse range of blockbusters that counteracted the English soccer team’s run to the World Cup semifinals, which made for a tough summer at the box office.
Figures released Friday showed 14.8 million movie admissions in November, making for a total of 161.3 million admissions for the first 11 months of 2018, compared to 153.5 million at the same point last year. That means that just over 14 million admissions in December – a number surpassed in each of the past five years – would be needed to beat the 1971 yearly tally of 176 million.
Despite some loud public grousing recently when it emerged that a top-tier ticket at the refurbished Odeon theater in Leicester Square would cost £40 ($50.75), Phil Clapp of the U.K. Cinema Assn. said that audiences are responding to a better cinema experience in Britain in general, spurred by investment by operators.

In two of the last three years, this poll has come down to One vote. And while at first it seemed like we’d see another close finish in 2018 – Avengers: Infinity War was always in the mix, and for a good stretch Phantom Thread was in pole position – in the end Tom Cruise did what he always does and ran away with it. Denmark, Iceland and Norway registered rises in 2018, but Finland and Sweden saw dips.
Denmark
Denmark has had a strong year for local films, led by Christoffer Boe’s The Purity Of Vengeance (also known as Journal 64), the Nordisk Film release that has already broken records as the highest-ever grossing local film in Danish cinemas and will remain on release until at least January 2019.
The film is the fourth and final feature that Zentropa has produced based on the bestselling Department Q series of novels, about two mismatched detectives solving cold cases; it has earned $10.1m (dkk66.4m) as of December...

The Golden Globe nominations were announced on Thursday morning, December 6, and just as interesting as the films and performances that were nominated are some of the top contenders that didn’t make the cut. Scroll down for some of the most noteworthy omissions, and check out the complete list of nominations here.
Among the biggest disappointments was the significant under-performance of the Neil Armstrong biographical drama “First Man.” It earned noms for Best Supporting Actress (Claire Foy) and Best Score (Justin Hurwitz), but Ryan Gosling was lost in space for his leading performance, Damien Chazelle was left out for his directing, and the movie was absent from Best Film Drama.

The 90-strong Hollywood Foreign Press Association is always an idiosyncratic group. They do not follow the same course as the tony New York Film Critics Circle, say, or the Indie Spirits. They lean a little more mainstream with their Golden Globes nominations, and of course they have their own Comedy or Musical categories to play with.
That offers more slots for the studios, who are asking for “A Star Is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” to be placed in the drama category, leaving room to breathe for musical sequels “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” and “Mary Poppins Returns,” as well as comedies “The Favourite” and “Green Book.”
The 76th Annual Golden Globe nominees will be announced on Thursday, December 6 at 8 a.m. Et. Check out our film predictions below and do come back Thursday for our post-nominations analysis.

Three and a half months after its U.S. release, “Crazy Rich Asians” finally hits the ground in China on Friday. But it’s up in the air whether the movie can enjoy the same kind of success in the world’s second-biggest movie market.
On the face of it, the Cinderella story of a Chinese-American academic who unwittingly falls for one of Asia’s wealthiest and most eligible bachelors might seem a natural hit in the Middle Kingdom, with its all-Asian cast, Asian setting, some dialogue in Chinese and a happy ending.
But what made the film so groundbreaking and distinctive in Hollywood – its lineup of Asian actors – is nothing new in China, where nearly every theatrical release features primarily Asian talent. The depiction of opulence and wealth also sits uneasily at a time when the Communist government is cracking down on both real and fictional excess.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
Thanksgiving is upon us! For this week’s question, we asked our panel of film critics which movie families they would most want to hang out with for the holiday.

Spending time with selkies (magical beings from Celtic mythology that shift between human and seal form) could be a fun twist on any holiday in need of rebranding. But since underwater festivities are probably complicated and wet, it helps when the hosts are a mixed group of selkies and humans. It’ll definitely be more manageable if one can stay dry.
With “Song of the Sea,” his sophomore animated feature based on Irish folklore, director Tomm Moore gave us the perfect family for such an unconventional celebration – granted it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving...

Jane Goldman is writing the screenplay, adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s classic Gothic novel of the same name. James most recently starred in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” and can next be seen in an untitled Danny Boyle pic. Her previous credits include “Baby Driver” alongside Ansel Elgort, “Darkest Hour,” and “Cinderella.”

Let’s face it: the “musical” element of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, category at the Golden Globes is a holdover from a different era, when films that featured production numbers were a staple of the business.
The category was initiated in 1951, the year of “An American in Paris,” and its early days honored films including “The King and I,” “My Fair Lady” and “The Sound of Music” as well as stars like Donald O’Connor in “Singin’ in the Rain.” Lately, however, it has become a repository for critical duds that would otherwise have no lane to swim in — films such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” the 2005 remake of “The Producers,” “Nine,” “Burlesque” and “The Greatest Showman.”
Meanwhile, musical dramas like “Dreamgirls” and “Les Misérables” have at times boxed out true comedies in the category, to say nothing of dramatic biopics that...

Grab your karaoke mics, because Mamma Mia! is returning to theaters in celebration of its 10-year anniversary! In a two-day event, more than 400 theaters across the country will show the original 2008 film, allowing fans to come and relish in the movie's charm and delight. Screenings will take place on Nov. 4 and 6, and tickets are available for purchase online at FathomEvents.com or at participating theater box offices.
The film takes place on a Greek island where hotelier Donna Sheridan-Carmichael (Meryl Streep) lives with her 20-year-old daughter Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried). Sophie is engaged and planning her wedding but wants her father to walk her down the aisle. She doesn't know exactly who her father is but narrows it down to three men before inviting them all to the wedding to find out which one is her real dad. Although it's been 10 years since Streep and Seyfried danced their way into our lives in Mamma Mia!

Both Cher and Abba have lived several lives in the decades since they first arrived, so maybe it was only a matter of time before they found each other. As both Seventies megastars experience public “revivals” of sorts (the blockbuster jukebox musical Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again‘s almost inexplicable success can make the case that neither has ever really left public consciousness for too long), the idea of the bawdy, no-nonsense, always-evolving Cher tackling the emotional kitsch of Swedish pop’s most enduring, influential export feels like fate.

“Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” has the same feel-good factor that made the original such an infectious, joyous thrill back in 2008. Meryl Streep and company lit up our screens with the warm glow of the Greek sun and made us sing, dance, and laugh. That feel-good nature endeared “Mamma Mia” to the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. earning it a Best Comedy or Musical bid as well as one for Streep. Could the sequel equal that showing?
Four of the last five musicals to be nominated for Best Musical/Comedy Picture were also nominated at least once in the acting categories at the Golden Globes, too. “The Greatest Showman” earned Hugh Jackman a Best Actor bid, while “La La Land” won Best Actress and Best Actor for Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, respectively. While “Sing Street” didn’t garner any further nominations, both Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt were nominated for “Into the Woods.

Cher has offered up another preview of her Abba tribute album Dancing Queen with an emotional take on the Swedish pop group’s 1981 single “One of Us.” Dancing Queen will be out next Friday.
On “One of Us,” Cher strips away much of the tropical production on the original to make the heaviness and dark lyrical content the proper forefront. The song appeared on Abba’s final album, The Visitor, and was heavily influenced by the divorces of the two couples in the quartet.

Updated: Universal we hear is stoked from what they’ve seen in the early clips from Danny Boyle’s untitled musical comedy and are moving the pic from its Sept. 13, 2019 release to June 28 next year.
Another reason for the Boyle pic move: Focus Features’ Downton Abbey movie which will roll out on Sept. 13 abroad, Sept 20 in U.S. Canada next year.
The pic, scripted by Richard Curtis, has musical elements and we’ve heard from non-studio sources that it’s connected to the Beatles’ music, specifically a guy who wakes up in a world where the Liverpool foursome’s ditties never existed. Universal knows how to handle musicals in the summer: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again made close to $120M domestic and $383.7M Ww last summer. On its new date, the Boyle title will come up against Paramount’s Tiffany Haddish-Rose Byrne comedy Limited Partners and Fox...

Cher‘s video for her cover of Abba’s “Sos” pays homage to the Swedish pop group’s original with a star-studded cast. The pop diva’s Abba tribute album Dancing Queen will be released on September 28th.
Jake Wilson (Hayley Kiyoko, Dua Lipa) helmed the gorgeous video, which uses similar dramatic techniques and stylistic tones to what was featured in the original 1975 video. Thandie Newton and director Oliver "Ol" Parker have been married since 1998 and are the proud parents of three gorgeous kids: daughters Ripley, 18, and Nico, 13, and son Booker, who was born in 2014. The English actress clearly blessed her children with her enviable genes, and daughter Nico is even following in her mom's acting footsteps by making her big-screen debut in Disney's upcoming live-action Dumbo adaptation.
We most recently saw the outspoken Westworld star and her husband with their two oldest children at the UK premiere of Ol's film Mamma Mia!
