High-quality action blockbuster with tense and smooth moments
kluseba16 August 2017
Confidential Assignment is a very entertaining humorous action- thriller from South Korea. The story itself isn't very original if you are familiar with classics such as Shiri but the movie's execution is really gripping from start to finish. The actors do a convincing job, the action sequences are explosive and professional and the story has a tense and vivid pace with a few welcome amusing breaks. The camera work is precise instead of shaky and a special mention goes out to the vivid soundtrack that suits the movie perfectly.

The story revolves around a North Korean investigator who gets betrayed by a colleague who steals expensive printing presses, kills the investigator's wife and escapes to South Korea. The two countries set up a special meeting and the North Korean investigator has three days to arrest his enemy and retrieve the printing presses. Obviously, the skilled investigator isn't allowed to do this investigation on his own in a foreign country. Since nobody is eager to take on this dangerous job, a colleague convinces an officer who has recently been suspended from office to team up with the North Korean. The two investigators couldn't be more different. The North Korean is quiet, professional and cold while his South Korean colleague is loud, clumsy and sociable. In the beginning, the two investigators aren't getting along at all and hide important information from each other. As the situation gets more and more dangerous and the three-day collaboration is about to come to an end, they must trust each other in order arrest a ruthless criminal who is ready to harm both countries.

The movie finds the right balance between brutal action sequences, tense investigative parts and a few doses of situation comedy. This film might be too intense for younger audiences but older teenagers and adults might appreciate this vivid genre mixture. If compared to similar Asian movies, the humorous parts aren't silly slapstick comedy but rather quirky situation comedy. If compared to similar movies, the action sequences aren't always overtly exaggerated but quite brutal, fast and technical. The suspenseful elements are much more expanded than in similar movies and there are a few quite sinister sequences. This pitiless approach makes the serious moments much more gripping and the smoother parts much more relieving. Confidential Assignment employs each genre element very efficiently.

While the story isn't surprising and this kind of movie isn't anything innovating, Confidential Assignment is a fast-paced roller coaster ride that is on the same level as Lethal Weapon and other movies of this kind. If this movie were released in North American cinemas, it would be one of this year's blockbuster as it was the case in South Korea where the movie broke several records and received numerous well-deserved awards.

Entertaining to the end!
elasalto1 January 2020
Many South Korean films are about the relationship between North Korea and South Korea. While some of them are understandably tragic and devastating, this film is not too serious. Like so many films, this is story about unlike friendship between people from two very different background- in this case Hyun Bin, mysterious detective from North Korea who seeks revenge and always fun to see Hae-jin Yoo, South Korean average detective with charming family, slowly bonding with each other (As is always the case with South Korean films, child actor is really good). Jumping from buildings, shooting, hand-to-hand combat, car chase, action sequences are bright with Hyun Bin and Hae-jin Yoo is perfect as a comedy relief. Entertaining to the end with some tear-jerking moments.

The actor who played the villain looked familiar. I was surprised to find out that he is actually late Ju-hyuk Kim, who was fantastic as crazy drug dealer in another South Korean gem Dokjeon. In this film too, he is a villain I love to hate. Rest in peace.

a good cliché.

Warning: Spoilers
North-South Korea relation is a popular subject in Korean cinema, every time movie like this come out, it will be surely become box office and get wide local media attention. I like Yoo Hae-Jin, he is the Korean greatest supporting actor of all time other than Oh Dal-Su, you can see his face in every big time Korean movie. Lately he got a lot of main character role, good for his career by the way.

About this movie, you've seen this a lot in Korean cinema in every movie about North Korean spy and everything. But, it still nailed you in your seat. It got a lot of comedy moment that make me laughing out loud, Yoona from the Girl Generation surely give her best as a comedy relief role. Too bad her screen time is not much. If you love suspense, Asian action comedy that to be honest is way better that U.S nowadays. You can enjoy this. Have fun!

Refreshing and entertaining
vpashish12 November 2022
Even though falls under the category of one time watch, highly refreshing and entertaining comedy action thriller awaits you. All the aspects from direction to acting and from comedy to action, fit perfectly and combine together to create a great enjoyable movie which you can enjoy with your friends and family. Both the lead actors have performed brilliantly. Action scenes are fairly good for a comedy dimension movie. The storyline too is different from regular spy movies which makes this fresh. The direction is also well executed. Sometimes it may feel shallow here and there but overall a great watch for sure.

The plot is simple and straight
yoggwork18 February 2019
The plot is simple and straight, but the rhythm is still good for Korean opera, much better than that in China. The story is at least complete.

Buddy comedy with some great action
Leofwine_draca10 February 2023
CONFIDENTIAL ASSIGNMENT is a 2017 action-comedy movie from South Korea that starts off on a serious footing. Our hero is actor Hyun Bin, a North Korean soldier who gets betrayed by a colleague who murders his wife and flees to the south. He takes with him some unique printing plates so the north send him to get them back, at which point he teams up with a comedic South Korean cop. This plays out very typically for a buddy comedy with some fish out of water humour, but what marks it out are the fight scenes which are above and beyond anything Hollywood shoots these days. The actors don't look like they're sparring, for example. There are car stunts, shoot-outs and all the requisite scenes, and only Yoon-a's mindless love interest falls flat. A sequel follows.

Rather enjoyable movie...
paul_haakonsen22 May 2022
When I sat down in 2022 to watch the 2017 South Korean action drama "Gongjo" (aka "Confidential Assignment"), I hadn't heard about the movie or seen any trailer. So I didn't really have any expectations to writers Inkyun Lee, Eunsook Kim and Yoon Hyun Ho.

The storyline was actually interesting and well-written. And I found the storyline to be entertaining from start to end, so the writers definitely put together something wholesome for director Kim Sung-Hoon to bring to life on the screen. I do like movies where you have South and North Korea working together in the story.

There is a good amount of action and some suspense throughout the course of the movie, but also some nice character development as well. But the movie also have some moments of light humor, which are nicely used to break up the tension from the action and suspense.

The movie was starring Hyun Bin, Hae-Jin Yoo and Ju-Hyuk Kim, and they were quite nicely cast for the movie. In fact, all actors and actresses in the movie actually put on good performances and brought their characters to life nicely on the screen.

If you enjoy action dramas, then "Gongjo" is well worth sitting down to watch. And while the movie runs for 124 minutes, it doesn't feel that long.

My rating of "Gongjo" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Interesting action thriller
paulclaassen5 June 2018
This is an interesting action thriller, but felt unnecessary detail got in the way of a film that could and should have been significantly faster paced, and could have cut the running time. Honestly, there were scenes that made me wonder why they were added to the final cut. Towards the end it does gain pacing and it is an exciting thrill ride.

Hyun Bin was excellent as Detective Lim Cheol - sleek, classy and tough. I really enjoyed him in the lead. Hae-jin Yoo was a bit too tongue-in-cheek-ish, although his performance was very good during the climatic final battle. The two actors did complement each other, though, and the trust issue between the two was effectively done, being North and South Koreans. In general, this was a good film.

Confidential Assignment Review: A must watch action entertainer!
Achyut_Prashast_Singh11 November 2017
Movie: Confidential Assignment (15)

Rating: 4.5/5

Well, this film is much better than most films made on this theme. It's a very energetic film and has some really amazing action scenes to watch out for. But wait: action is not the only good thing it has got to offer. There's an excellent and interesting screenplay, powerful performances, intense emotions and light hearted humour, etc. I can't sum up this film's excellence in a review of few paragraphs. It's that AMAZING!

CONFIDENTIAL ASSIGNMENT is an entertaining action film which director Sung-Hoon Kim has made an enthralling experience calling for another watch. The action scenes are so well executed that they demand a repeat value as well. The way it balances action, emotion and humour is commendable.

Technically, the film stands tall. The cinematography in certain action sequences is splendid. The visuals are a treat to watch. The editing is decent as the film rarely deviates from storytelling; it doesn't bore for even a second.

Hyun Bin is quite excellent. His performance is a commendable one as he manages to show multiple emotions with perfection. Yu Hae-jin, however steals the show with his solid performance. Rest of the cast does a fairly good job.

The action is excellent, the emotions are well brought out, and the comedy too is quite a good one. The music, however, is another major reason why the film stands this tall. Various sequences get enhanced by the energetic music and I would love to hear it again and again. It's quite catchy and foot-tapping, apart from being hummable.

Definitely, CONFIDENTIAL ASSIGNMENT is a must watch for action lovers. Not just for them, however. The film is an energetic, lively entertainer with a solid repeat value. Do go for it, and you won't regret it. I heard somewhere that it's coming to India as well, and that's truly a great news!

Cheep virgin of Rush Hour
Saro0onh24 July 2018
I have heard a lot about this film and how wonderful it is worth watching. I did not like to to watch any Korean-language film but any way after watching it I felt it was a cheap version of Rush Hour. Action cumbersome and the supernatural hero who comes out of the clashes with minor injuries and nothing new unfortunately

Great acting with nice plot
indyshafa30 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a great movie involving the dispute between North-South Korea. Hyunbin was able to take the role of Lim Cheolryung perfectly, with the cold stare, dark green suit and swift-like recklessness. Lim Cheolryung's aura was, well, perfect: it supported his back story on how harsh it was for him to endure his most painful betrayal in North Korea's military back then. Lim Cheolryung and Kang Jintae's playful fights always lift the mood up, which is nice. I don't usually fancy action movies, but how swift and calculating Lim Cheolryung's character moved made me like the movie a lot. I fell in love with Hyunbin here, with how passionate he was as Lim Cheolryung. It was a pleasure watching this movie.

Well done buddy cop action movie
phd_travel12 March 2020
For Crash Landing fans this movie is quite a fun watch because Hyun Bin acts as a N Korean soldier plus he looks cool as the action hero here. The odd couple buddy cop thing works well with some funny moments along the way. The action is convincing. The one fault is it is a bit long especially the last part seems unnecessarily extended.

Solid Action Film
AJ_McAninch3 January 2020
Like Gong Yoo, Hyun Bin can also turn in a solid action performance with the added North-South Korea buddy picture in this case. The film is exciting, bloody, and funny with no pretensions: an enjoyable popcorn movie with the Hyun Bin-Yoo Hae-Jin team likable and very effective.

Hyun Bin Most Compelling Actor I have discovered in 2021
deborah-991723 April 2021
I am here for Hyun Bin. I never watch action movies. They are not my thing. I don't like to watch violence. What I appreciate in S. Korean movies is the "violence" is often incredibly choreographed. Whatever martial arts these guys do, they are good at it. Hyun Bin as an action hero is sleek, pained and damn good at his job. That may be all you need to know.
