12 Angry Men: From TV to the Big Screen (2011)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Film historian Vance Kepley discusses the two versions of the play 12 Angry Men: 1954 Studio One production and the Sidney Lumet film. We start off getting some production information about the Studio One version and the impact of its original airing. From here we get some information about other television shows that were turned into features and then we get into the production of the film version. We learn about the very small budget on the film, its shooting schedule and then the somewhat shocking fact that the movie didn't do well at the box office. If you're a fan of either version then you'll really enjoy this documentary from The Criterion Collection. Kepley does a wonderful job at talking about both versions and he shares a lot of great information. He briefly discusses the Russian version as well as the future television movie but the main focus are the two earliest versions.
