Top U.S. military officials have vowed to root out sexual abuse, a persistent problem in all branches of the armed forces. The victims of sexual battery, harassment and stalking are mostly female members of the military, but gay men and others also have reported assaults. In some cases, the perpetrators turned out to be officers tasked with preventing abuse. Zlatica Hoke reports.

A recent Pentagon report says the number of sexual assaults among people in the military continues to grow. The estimated number of incidents, ranging from groping to rape, increased by 37 percent last year. Both men and women were victims. This is prompting them, and activists, to push for deep changes in the US military. VOA Pentagon correspondent Luis Ramirez reports.

The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee held hearings Tuesday into sexual assault in the military, following a Pentagon report that found as many as 26,000 cases of abuse in the past year.
