I was eager to watch this having visited France and Belgium , the Newfoundland park and the memorial really moved me, seeing fathers and sons from such a small community. The loss of life was horrendous.

I enjoyed the film but i was disappointed of the depiction of Haig and the staff officers perpetuating that they didn't care and were eating and drinking whilst men were dying. This myth has blighted what we were led to believe since the 1980s this Lions led by donkeys rubbish. Trench warfare was horrific with a inexperienced citizen army, the Somme was inevitable but nevertheless extremely sad.

By 1917 we were very good at what we did but needed to learn some very hard lessons. 174 Generals were killed in WW1 and at Haigs funeral in 1928 vast numbers of veterans turned out testament to one of the best generals in our history. Academics have moved on from this"Butcher of the Somme" tosh why can't these film makers?
