Debate is underway in Turkey’s film community over similarities between the award-winning 2019 Turkish feature “Passed by Censor” and Elvira Lind’s “The Letter Room,” which is nominated for the Best Live Action Short Oscar. Both films revolve around similar lead characters: prison guards tasked with scanning inmates’ mail for objectionable content. Now the Turkish filmmaking team has lawyered up and wants to negotiate with their American counterparts.
Financed by Topic, the streaming service owned by First Look Media, “The Letter Room” stars Lind’s husband Oscar Isaac and Alia Shawkat. After debuting at Hollyshorts in November 2020, it appeared on the Oscars shortlist in February; several more distribution deals followed.
On April 11, a column by film critic Vecdi Sayar of the Turkish newspaper BirGün cited the similarities between “Passed by Censor” and “The Letter Room” as the latest example of a Turkish film that hasn’t gotten its due for influencing other productions.

It’s hard to believe that up until 1971, “The Divine Order” was being invoked as the reason women did not have the right to vote in Switzerland. This sweetly moving demonstration of what can be accomplished with people band together (in this case, the women of a small village in Switzerland) is a joy to watch.Marie Leuenberger as Nora
“The more we push, the more the men do what they want,” Nora, played by Marie Leuenberger tells a pamphleteer encouraging approval of the referendum about to be voted upon granting women the right to vote in a very conservative Swiss village.
Nora is a young housewife and mother who lives with her husband, their two sons and her father-in-law in a little village. Here, in the Swiss countryside, little or nothing is felt of the huge social upheavals that the movement of May 1968 has caused. Nora’s life, too,...

One hundred seventy features have been submitted for consideration in the Documentary Feature category for the 90th Academy Awards. That’s 25 more than 2016. Assuming they all book their qualifying runs in New York and Los Angeles, the members of the documentary branch have just a few more weeks to see as many films as possible and file their votes for the shortlist of 15 to be announced in December. They’re each supposed to watch an assigned list of about 20 films, plus as many more as they can.

Bobbi Jene Smith with Elvira Lind on Laura Dern: "Well, she's been an idol for me. I always looked up to her so I was excited to speak to her." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
The 2017 Tribeca Film Festival was a momentous one for Elvira Lind, the director/cinematographer of Bobbi Jene. Days before the awards ceremony, where her film on Bobbi Jene Smith swept the documentary competition categories (Best Feature, Cinematography and Editing for Adam Nielsen), she gave birth to her and Oscar Isaac's son, Eugene.
In Bobbi Jene, Laura Dern is seen having a conversation with Bobbi Jene Smith as they talk about the rules of the trade - for women. "Don't overdo it!" "Don't be angry!" "Stay sexy!" Dern lists. And where does enjoyment go in all of this concern? Bobbi explains Gaga in response. "It's physical," she says. "You enjoy effort and you enjoy pleasure."

Doc NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, has announced its 15-film Short List of Oscar contenders along with its opening-night selection, “The Final Year,” in which Greg Barker follows key members of Barack Obama’s administration during their last year in office. The festival runs November 9-16.
Thom Powers, Doc NYC’s artistic director as well as documentary programmer for Tiff, oversees curation of the Short List of films that may be in the running for the Academy Award for Best Documentary feature. This year contains a spectrum of funders and distributors, including four from Netflix — and none from HBO.
Historically, most Doc NYC picks do land on the Academy’s official 15-film Oscar Short List. For the past four years, the Short List had nine to 10 titles overlap, with four or five titles going on to Oscar nominations. For the last six years, Doc NYC screened the documentary that...

‘Battle of the Sexes’ and ‘Victoria & Abdul’ Launch Fall Wave; ‘Loving Vincent’ Shows Animated Start
The fall specialized season ratcheted up with a group of top festival releases starting their theatrical release with later awards in their sights. As expected, well-reviewed “The Battle of the Sexes” (Fox Searchlight) stood out as the top performer in a week without much other signs of life from holdovers (IFC’s “The Viceroy’s House” is the best of a weak bunch).
In two initial cities, Judi Dench showed her royal form in Stephen Frears’ “Victoria & Abdul” (Focus) with the weekend’s best per theater average, while “Stronger” (Roadside Attractions) saw some success in a much wider limited release.
The upstart was “Loving Vincent” (Good Deed), which unexpectedly came up with a $24,000 exclusive New York opening. This rare animated arthouse release (using Van Gogh “painted” animation to tell its narrative) could be a sleeper success within this uber-competitive period.

The weekend's new releases fell shy of Mojo's weekend forecast, but Kingsman: The Golden Circle still managed to debut larger than the original, finishing in the #1 spot. Unfortunately, The Lego Ninjago Film fell well short of expectations as did Friend Request, which delivered a mere $2.4 million opening. There were, however, some bright spots among limited release titles as Battle of the Sexes and Victoria and Abdul delivered strong opening results as September's calendar grosses continue to pace toward record heights. Topping the box office was Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, delivering an estimated $39 million from 4,003 theaters. The opening improves on the $36.2 million opening for the first film, but the film's performance over the next couple of weeks will tell the true story. The first Kingsman turned its $36 million debut into a $128 million domestic run, a 3.54x multiplier. Should Golden Circle follow suit we're talking about a $138+ million domestic run, which...

Artist biographies come a dime a dozen. Be it the historical documentary looking at the life and career of an iconic cultural figure or a “talking head” picture that sees that very figure speaking bluntly about the life they have led, the form may very but the central thesis is relatively the same. However, every so often a documentary comes along that either shatters the formal expectations set for this subgenre of documentary or is so entrancing narratively that the formal cliches can be overlooked. And then there are the films that do both.

Who is worthy of a documentary about themselves is a question that comes up a lot when watching and occasionally writing about documentaries. A long life doesn’t necessarily make you any worthier of one, just as youth doesn’t imply unworthiness. Of course, who is a worthy subject is ultimately in the eye of the beholder so to speak and it is the film itself is what should be judged.
I am sure there was a reason that director Elvira Lind chose to follow Bobbi Jene Smith for a documentary. Beyond ‘she’s a great dancer’, of course...

"I need to do what I need to do..." Oscilloscope Labs has debuted a trailer for a documentary titled Bobbi Jene, profiling the life and provocative work of famed dancer Bobbi Jene Smith. Bobbi is an American dancer who, after 10 years in a prominent position at the world-famous Batsheva Dance Company in Israel, decides to leave and head home to the Us to create her own boundary breaking art. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, where it won Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Doc overall. As described, the film "delves into what it takes for a woman to gain her own independence in the extremely competitive world of dance and to find self-fulfillment in the process." Seems like a very promising and also important doc from the dance world, with plenty of "erotic energy" and much more to offer. Worth a watch. Here's the official trailer...

In the film world, "going indie" suggests a desire to make something that the major Hollywood studios don't want to finance and/or distribute. But what does it mean for a dancer? A new trailer for the documentary Bobbi Jene suggests a strong creative voice behind the camera and true artistry on the screen. Filmmaker Elvira Lind developed trust and intimacy with her subject, Bobbi Jene Smith, and that comes through in the trailer. Synopsis: After a decade of stardom in Israel, American dancer Bobbi Jene decides to leave behind her prominent position at the world-famous Batsheva Dance Company, as well as the love of her life, to return to the U.S. to create her own boundary breaking art. Tracking the personal and professional challenges that...
