Cathy Schulman says getting into the movie business was a “bit of an accident.” It was a time before studying cinema was recognized as a fine art, so she was a playwrighting major at Yale. Then someone told her she would average about $1,500 for her plays. Concerned if she could support herself, she was advised to look into the movie business. “I said, ‘What’s that?’” Schulman, now the CEO and president of Welle Entertainment, recalls. “And the next thing you knew, I was in an interview, and I was hired to work on a set, and the rest is history.”
The movie was “Blue Steel,” and the-then 22-year-old Schulman was excited to see the film was being directed by a woman, Kathryn Bigelow. (She didn’t know it would be another 20 years before she worked with a female director.) From those humble beginnings, Schulman would go on to enormous...

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

At a time when theatrical is looking to distinguish itself with more prolific fare than the factory conveyor belt of humdrum product coming from streaming, it’s with great upset to hear that Lionsgate’s feature adaptation of Judy Blume’s pinnacle 1970 novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret fell greatly short at the box office with a $6.8M opening; below both the $7M-$9M that the studio was seeing, and the more bullish $10M+ that rivals spotted.
Figuring out what went wrong here with Judy Blume’s first big screen Hollywood foray, which won over critics (99% certified fresh) and the few who bought tickets (A CinemaScore), has less to do with the commercial potential of the pic’s genre –movies based on female-skewing bestselling novels– and more to do with...

A lot has been said about the romantic relationship between Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart. Though the couple split back in 2020, there was still a lot of chatter regarding the Riverdale stars. And since Sprouse was seen spending time with other women, there was plenty of speculation about infidelity around the couple. Now, three years later, Sprouse is addressing the cheating rumors once and for all.

Cole Sprouse is laying it all out on the table.
While sitting down with Alex Cooper on the latest episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, the former Disney Channel star recounted the “cringey” story of how he lost his virginity as a young teenager.
“This is such a great story. I feel like it says so much about me,” Sprouse, now 30, told Cooper before providing a few minor details to paint the picture: “I was 14 when I lost my virginity, so this is still bowl-cut guy.”
“I was on a family trip in Florida, and I met this girl who was older, so that’s already dubious. The first night we kind of made out, the second night — this makes me nervous, it’s so cringey — I, like, knocked on her hotel door,” he continued, noting that his heart was “beating” as the two then made their way to a beach.

It was announced in 2019 that American author Colleen Hoover's "It Ends With Us" would be getting a movie adaptation after the novel was optioned by Justin Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios, with the author serving as a consultant on the film. The casting news has arrived shortly after much online debate pointing out the controversial themes of "It Ends With Us," the novel's problematic portrayal of abusive relationships, and a recent endeavor to publish a coloring book inspired by the title has been met with backlash from critics of Hoover. The day has finally arrived: Netflix has ads.
On Thursday, the streaming giant officially released its “Basic with Ads” tier in the United States. The cheap(er) subscription plan includes four to five minutes of ads per hour, with each ad being about 15-30 seconds long. These spots play both before titles and in the middle of films and TV episodes. There’s certain exceptions; when new Netflix original films coming to the streamer, like “Knives Out 2,” all ads play before the movie starts. However, not all movies have the ad-tier option.
Four of the movies on the streamer’s current Top 10 are unavailable on the plan. Those titles still appear in searches on the ad tier, but they’re marked with a red lock icon in the right-hand of its thumbnail. Clicking on an unavailable film opens up a window prompting the user to change their subscription in order to access the content.

“Jane the Virgin” actor Justin Baldoni is hoping to bring the exploits of Pac-Man to a movie theater near you.
Baldoni’s production company Wayfarer Studios is backing a live-action film based on the popular arcade game, along with Bandai Namco Entertainment, the Japanese video game publisher that created Pac-Man, as well as Ace Combat, Galaga and Tekken.
The ubiquitous video game, in which a starving Pac-Man chomps his way through a maze while attempting to evade deadly ghosts, has previously served as inspiration for television, with a 1980s animated TV series of the same name that ran on ABC and a 2013 cartoon show “Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures” that played on Disney Xd in the United States.
But until now, Pac-Man has only been a highlighter-yellow face on a pixilated screen. Details for the live-action movie version, including but not limited to the plot and the character’s physical iteration,...

The 27-year-old star of Edge of Seventeen, Columbus and Unpregnant is growing up with indie Montana Story and a role in the next season of The White Lotus
In the last half decade, Haley Lu Richardson has amassed an impressive variety of roles, from slapstick comedies and indie dramas, united in their striking naturalism.
As the popular best friend to Hailee Steinfeld’s misanthrope in teen comedy Edge of Seventeen, a star-crossed lover with cystic fibrosis in Five Feet Apart and an architecture nerd who befriends a grieving older man in Kogonada’s critically acclaimed Columbus, the 27-year-old American actor’s warmth consistently elevates what could be flat or derivative characters into full-blooded people. She is remarkably good at the more casual, throwaway aspects of life that often translate poorly to screen – Googling Planned Parenthood in Unpregnant, shooting a glance in the memories of a techno-sapien robot in After Yang or,...

“The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight,” a new YA romance feature from the producers of “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” franchise is heading to Netflix.
Based on the book of the same name by Jennifer E. Smith, the film follows complete strangers Hadley and Oliver, who find themselves falling for each other on a flight from New York to London, only to get separated when they land. Despite the low probability of reconnecting in a city as big as London, the bond forged on the flight spurs them toward reunion, motivated by the hope that their missed connection is a shot at love. The search will not only reward Hadley and Oliver, but will prove whether it was fate or misfortune that got between them.

Warner Bros. has debuted a new trailer for the romantic comedy ‘Moonshot.’
Like many 20-somethings her age, Sophie (Lana Condor) is faced with a world of choices. Sure, there’s the future stuff, the family stuff, the job stuff. But, where she is truly confused is on the big choice, the momentous one, the top-of-list one that stands out—what to do about him!
Her long-term b.f. Calvin (Mason Gooding) has moved with his family and taken a job out of town. As in way out of town. A published scientist, Calvin’s posting was supposed to be temporary and now, that “temporary” is beginning to read more like “permanent.” Then there’s Walt (Cole Sprouse), who’s also confronted with choices, but maybe not so many. He’s pretty content with his going nowhere assistant barista job in a college bookshop and his solitary existence. That is, until...

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian’s score for Redeeming Love, which is set for release tomorrow via Milan Records, as the Universal Pictures title hits theaters.
The film directed by DJ Caruso is a Western romance based on the bestselling novel by Francine Rivers that watches as a young couple’s relationship clashes with the harsh realities of the California Gold Rush of 1850.
For the project marking Tyler’s sixth collaboration with Caruso, he and Vivian looked to craft a sweeping score that captured the heart of its story and themes.
“Composing the score for Redeeming Love was truly one of the most moving experiences of my life. Incredibly directed by long-time collaborator DJ Caruso, the characters imbue such a sense of grace and love that I wanted to…write music that evoked their raw emotion in all of its complexity,” said Tyler.

Gotham City is getting a new protector.
“In the Heights” star Leslie Grace and “Five Feet Apart” actress Haley Lu Richardson are emerging as top contenders to take the role of Barbara Gordon in “Batgirl,” the upcoming HBO Max superhero film.
Testing for the role has already started. Isabela Merced, who has appeared in “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” and Zoey Deutch, the star of “Zombieland: Double Tap” and “Why Him?,” have already tested or will test for the role. It’s possible that the search will expand beyond these names — because it’s, you know, a search — and today’s front-runner is tomorrow’s also-ran when it comes to casting.
“Batgirl” will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the directing pair behind “Bad Boys for Life,” one of the few box office successes of pandemic-ravaged 2020. Christina Hodson (“The Flash”) wrote the screenplay.

CBS Films’ 2019 romantic drama “Five Feet Apart” is set to release on March 12 in China, where it is sensibly being marketed as a romance for the Covid-19 era.
It is also selling its lead actor Haley Lu Richardson as thinner and ever so slightly taller than she is in real life. Chinese internet users pointed out Wednesday that Richardson has been noticeably photoshopped in the China promotional movie poster to be skinnier. Her fellow co-star Cole Sprouse escaped with just his backpack taken out and his skin lightened.
A similar doctoring of Richardson’s weight appears to have occurred in the poster for the Korea market, though the effect is slightly less pronounced.
“Do we have to do this even for foreign films?” asked one dismayed commenter on the taste-making Douban platform. Another wrote: “This is idiotic marketing. For this type of small-budget film, it’s not like people are...

‘Life In A Year’ Trailer: Terminal Illness Forces Jaden Smith & Cara Delevingne To Rush Through Love
You can probably thank “The Fault In Our Stars” for kickstarting this trend in recent years, but Hollywood has seemingly been in love with the idea of a YA film focused on a new love affair between teens that is interrupted by one of their terminal illnesses. In March, the first L.A. screening of Justin Baldoni’s Clouds took place at Warner Bros.’ screening room 5. It would be the last day the studio lot was open. “Tom Hanks had just gotten Covid, the lot was empty, and no one knew if we should even be in the same room together,” the director recalls. Eight months later, Clouds now can be found on another studio’s streaming service after a transition that could only have happened in an industry-shifting pandemic.

Podcast content studio Qcode, known for adapting series with A-list talent for film and TV, raised $6.4 million in a Series A funding round led by Sonos with participation by C Ventures.
Qcode, in LA, is a leading destination for fiction and immersive storytelling in the podcast space. It’s released eight scripted podcasts at No.1 in the fiction category and top 10 overall on the Apple Podcast Chart and said additional investment will help it scale up to more than 15 originals a year across genres and in partnership with talent, production and media companies.
Former CAA agent Rob Herting launched the podcaster in 2019 with production company Automatik and management firm Grandview. “We started Qcode … to give more autonomy to creators and artists in building new and original stories,” he said.

You have to hand it to “Clouds,” the latest wholesome YA drama to premiere on the Disney Plus platform: There has never been, and probably never will be, another teen movie to pay such repeated tribute to Mary Oliver. A line from the late American poet’s “The Summer Day” — “Tell me, what is it you plan to do/With your one wild and precious life?” — is quoted multiple times in director Justin Baldoni’s sweet, smoothed-over biopic of teenage singer-songwriter Zach Sobiech, who died aged 18 of cancer, shortly after scoring the viral folk-pop hit that lends the film its title. The resonance of Oliver’s words is obvious, but effective.
Then again, “Clouds” also gets misty-eyed over the lyrics to Jason Mraz’s twee 2008 smash “I’m Yours:” It’s not a film that especially distinguishes between the sublime and the stickily sentimental, but in that respect, it feels...

What started out pre-Covid-19 as a Warner Bros. theatrical teen inspirational drama, “Clouds,” became an early-acquisition feature film for Disney Plus, which begins streaming the movie on Oct. 16.
“Clouds” is based on the memoir of Laura Sobiech, whose son, Zach Sobiech, had a viral YouTube hit in late 2012 with “Clouds,” an easygoing, uplifting pop song that touched on the heavy themes of Zach’s mortality. Zach, 17, wrote and performed the song amid his battle with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer, which took his life in May 2013.
“Clouds” director Justin Baldoni co-financed “Clouds” with Warner Bros. under Baldoni’s production banner, Wayfarer Studios. When the film sat dormant earlier this year with theaters indefinitely closed or in flux, Baldoni says he bought the film’s portion owned by Warner Bros. and took “Clouds” to Disney, which bought distribution rights for Disney Plus.
