The John Wick spin-off, Ballerina, starring Ana De Armas, has unloaded footage all over the audience at Liongate’s panel at CinemaCon. According to our own Chris Bumbray, who was in attendance, the spin-off takes place between Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4. They also conveyed that the film was tracking so well that the studio gave director Len Wiseman and Wick series director Chad Stahelski more money in the budget to create additional massive action sequences.
The trailer that was shown showcased De Armas doing Mma and gunplay, much like Keanu Reeves in the Wick films. However, it is noted that the fight sequences in Ballerina are very different from the Wick movies. Here, they look “more feral and less polished.” The movie is also said to be “insanely violent.” Although it is known that Reeves has a cameo, the preview teases his appearance as a trailer stinger.
The spin-off had a long journey.

Many of the current generation of Asian and Pacific Islander writers working in television today came up through the Cape New Writers Fellowship, one of the most successful entry-level programs in the industry.
Now, the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment is expanding its focus to the other end of the pipeline. The Cape Showrunners Incubator, powered by Starz’s #TakeTheLead diversity initiative for its inaugural year, will draw upon the nonprofit’s experience in talent development to give upper-level Api TV scribes the mentorship and other resources they need to break through that final ceiling.
“Showrunners and creative executives are the two main drivers of what ultimately ends up on screen, and this incubator is the perfect complement to the Cape Leaders Fellowship for creative executives if we want to change the stories that are told in mainstream media,” Cape executive director Michelle K. The first John Wick movie would easily have been a one-hit wonder, but with the presence of an actor like Keanu Reeves and a filmmaker like Chad Stahelski, the series has become one of the most revered action franchises of all time. Now having a gross of more than a billion dollars worldwide, its last movie was a cherry on top thanks to its usual adrenalin-packed action scenes and grueling narrative.

To me, there is very little as frustrating as returning to a streaming service ready to pick up where you left off in a movie or episode of TV only to find out that the platform in question is not giving you the option to resume where you last were. When things are working properly, the streamer allows you to jump right back into your title with minimal hoops to jump through, but when it somehow forgets where you last were, it can be incredibly frustrating to remember what episode you were on and then to fast-forward to a spot that looks like it might be roughly around the same scene you last remember seeing. Recently, Peacock has taken much of the guessing — and clicking — out of starting up your streaming experience by introducing a new feature that allows you to get back into your show or movie straight from the home screen.

Sometimes when you’re a cinematographer, the goal is to produce the richest and most exquisite possible look. Other times, it might be the opposite. The latter was the case for Pal Ulvik Rokseth, the Norwegian-born Dp who was tasked with producing the most downscale view of New York City possible for the three-part Peacock miniseries “The Continental: From the World of John Wick.” For this 1970s era prequel, Rokseth’s marching orders were to take the contemporary look and style of the four John Wick movies starring Keanu Reeves and turn them upside-down while exploring the origin of he iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe. He was tasked with capturing re distinctively grimy and decrepit look of the city in the 1970s, replete with trash-filled streets, steam churning out of the sewers and graffiti everywhere. It’s dark and messy and shadowy by design.

Exclusive: Peacock is touting the success of The Continental: From the World of John Wick.
The Lionsgate-produced series premiered its first episode on September 22, only to become Peacock’s biggest original launch of the year, meaning that the episode reached more accounts in its first weekend than any other original offering, according to NBCUniversal.
Following the release of the remaining two episodes, The Continental now ranks among the top five Peacock originals of all time in terms of reach, joining the ranks of Bel-Air, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, Poker Face, and Based on a True Story.
Based on the current top five, it appears Peacock is finding success with both existing IP as well as original concepts.
Of course, The Continental falls under the former, as it explores the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins that is at the center of the John Wick universe. Though its already a billion-dollar franchise,...

The Continental: From the World of John Wick has wrapped up its three-episode run, but a number of questions were left unanswered, which has fans wondering whether season 2 might be in the works. I haven’t had a chance to watch the series for myself yet, so to be safe, I’ll just say watch out for Spoilers.
Related The Continental producers didn’t know if John Wick spinoff would work without Keanu Reeves
While speaking with GamesRadar, The Continental director and executive producer Albert Hughes said that while he “hasn’t heard anything” about a potential season 2, he has been “daydreaming” about the next stage of the story. “I would like to see if [Winston] becomes what he hated,” Hughes explained. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The red bird landing on the ledge with Cormac in episode 1, to then appearing in the penthouse with Winston during the finale, that’s...

This article contains spoilers for The Continental: From The World Of John Wick.
Fresh off this year’s John Wick: Chapter 4 comes the spinoff prequel television series The Continental: From the World of John Wick, developed for television by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, and Shawn Simmons. Running for three feature-length episodes on Peacock, the series follows the adventures of Winston Scott (Colin Woodell), the future head of the eponymous New York hotel that serves as a safe haven to a shadowy order of global assassins. Set decades before the John Wick films, Winston finds himself on his vendetta as he is drawn deeper into the lethal world of assassins, taking on the Continental’s ‘70s proprietor Cormac O’Connor (Mel Gibson).
Filled with explosive gunfights and a quiet expansion of the John Wick shared cinematic universe, The Continental depicts a rise to power for Winston while proving him every inch as deadly as John Wick himself.

This article contains spoilers for the premiere episode of "The Continental."
Even a casual viewer of the "John Wick" films can't help but be intrigued by the franchise's assassin-filled world. One of the unique pleasures of the original 2014 movie is the way it begins in a very grounded, incredibly recognizable reality, sliding bit by bit into a wilder, more garish, more violent, more intriguing underworld along with John (played in the films by Keanu Reeves), as he delves back into the life of murder he thought he'd left behind.
The very first spinoff/expanded universe/prequel to come from the "John Wick" films is the Peacock original miniseries "The Continental: From the World of John Wick," and it finds itself in territory that's both untouched and well-established. Each subsequent "John Wick" film (from Chapters 2 through 4) has developed the world of "Wick" on a grand, global scale, taking John to locales all around the world.

Albert Hughes "doesn't want to disrespect" anyone with the new 'John Wick' series. The 51-year-old director is at the helm of 'The Continental: From the World of John Wick' - which serves as a spin-off to the action movie series - and insisted that he never wanted to "copy" the films in the franchise as he insisted that was not what he was hired for in the first place. He told MovieWeb: "I would never want to disrespect by copying, and that's not who I am. They didn't hire me for that. There are plenty of no-talent directors that, if they wanted to push around, they could do that. The truth is there is not enough talent to go around. If they wanted, the copy would have done that. They told me from the start, which I really love, that it was filmmaker-driven! I come from...

In 1995, brothers Albert and Allen Hughes followed their electrifying directorial debut “Menace II Society” with “Dead Presidents,” an ambitious crime film set in 1970s New York filled with specific political references to illustrate the shameful treatment of Black veterans returning to the U.S. after the Vietnam War. Albert returns to that era as the director of the first and final episodes of Peacock’s “The Continental: From the World of John Wick,” a three-part prequel to the “John Wick” universe set in the titular hotel during the 1970s in New York City. The episodes exhibit Hughes’ usual strengths, from a balletic interaction between blocking, music, and camera movement to a bold, expressive color palette, but “The Continental” is a vastly different take on ’70s NYC than what Hughes learned on “Dead Presidents” — and that’s just the way Hughes likes it.

The highly-anticipated spin-off “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” premiered Friday on a streaming platform some in the industry would find surprising.
What makes the show stand out — apart from its miniseries format, comprised of three movie-sized episodes spread across three consecutive Fridays (a callback to television events of yore) — is the fact that the prequel, spun off from one of the crown jewels of the Lionsgate portfolio, landed on the NBCUniversal-owned streamer rather than on Starz, Lionsgate’s own premiere cable channel and streaming platform.
The question remains: Why?
The show takes place in New York in the 1970s, but exists in the same shared, blood-splattered universe where, decades later, Keanu Reeves’ John Wick would go on a roaring rampage of revenge.
Basil Iwanyk, founder of Thunder Road Films, the production and financing company behind “John Wick” and “The Continental,” said the decision to move the...

In the world of "John Wick," The Continental is a safe refuge for all contractors, a neutral ground that provides much-needed respite and assistance to those belonging to the criminal underworld. Not much is revealed about this mysterious hotel chain, except that its rules need to be upheld no matter what the cost, and certain branches -- such as New York and Osaka -- are ready to defend this sacred ground until their last breath. This preps the foundation for "The Continental: From the World of John Wick," a "John Wick" spin-off series that delves into how Ian McShane's Winston Scott (played by Colin Woodell in the TV series) presided over the New York branch as a young proprietor. This limited series is set to follow an alternate history of the 1970s while incorporating real-world events within the context of the franchise's deep and evolving lore.

Where to Stream ‘John Wick’ Prequel Series ‘The Continental’ and Get Tickets to Its Hitman Hotel Bar
Before there was John Wick, there was Winston Scott, the manager of Manhattan’s high-end hitman hotel. That’s the premise of The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a three-part prequel series that begins streaming Friday on Peacock.
Based on the Keanu Reeves action film franchise, The Continental takes place in 1970s Manhattan and explores how Winston (Colin Woodell) came to lead the hotel for professional assassins. When his brother Frankie (Ben Robson) steals something “very important to a lot of very dangerous people” from the current Continental hotelier Cormac (Mel Gibson), Winston assembles a team of killers to save his brother and take on the hotel — and every assassin in it.
To celebrate the action-packed spinoff, Lionsgate and Peacock are bringing the assassin underworld to the Big Apple with Welcome to the Continental: The Hotel Bar Experience, a three-week-long pop-up that kicks off today in the Financial District.

What started from a stolen car, a dead dog, and numerous headshots has now become a full-blown assassin universe. The Continental: From the World of John Wick is a prequel series to the global hit John Wick film franchise and it tells the origin story of Winston Scott from the main films. Set in the 1970s New York the Peacock mini-series shows us how Winston became the manager of the titular hotel which is a haven for assassins around the world.
While it doesn’t compare to the main John Wick film in any way The Continental has its own charms and action sequences that will surely be loved by the fans. The Continental is fully able to pull off a self-contained story with massive stakes and a brilliant character who will now be a part of the cannon forever.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick director Albert Hughes first crossed paths with John Wick masterminds Chad Stahelski and David Leitch in 2008. At the time, Stahelski and Leitch had only recently decided to make the jump from stunt work to the director’s chair, beginning with second unit. So they interviewed for the second-unit gig on The Book of Eli, which Hughes co-directed alongside his twin brother, Allen. Stahelski and Leitch didn’t end up with the job, but it didn’t stop them from achieving their directorial dream a handful of years later when they co-directed the Keanu Reeves actioner John Wick.
Nearly a decade later, John Wick is one of the preeminent action franchises, boasting four films, each of which has outgrossed its predecessors at the box office, with a fifth on the way. Stahelski reminded Hughes of their encounter 15 years earlier during a Zoom meeting...

Keanu Reeves gave just about everything he had to make the John Wick franchise the success that it is, but can it work without him? With the release of The Continental: From the World of John Wick nearly upon us, we’re about to find out, but even the producers of the series weren’t sure it was going to work without Keanu Reeves.
While speaking with THR, John Wick franchise producer Basil Iwanyk said, “It’s hard to look at: Ok, why does a movie or franchise work? There’s a million different ways to look at it, and you just really don’t know. Of course, there’s research and bullshit, but it’s something in your gut. This is a prequel in the ’70s that doesn’t have Keanu and John Wick in it. Will it work?“

While promoting Peacock’s John Wick spinoff series The Continental: From the World of John Wick, executive producer Basil Iwanyk acknowledges the elephant in the room: How does one explore the John Wick universe without the eponymous star — played by Keanu Reeves — himself?

John Wick’s name might be the one in all the titles, and his face the one on all the posters. But as any John Wick fan could tell you, the appeal of John Wick has never been solely about its leading man. Just as essential to its enduring popularity has been the universe it’s built over four features: one populated by elite assassins and guided by arcane rules, cast in perpetually moody lighting just beneath the surface of our mundane reality.
Whether that setting in itself is enough to mint new (anti)heroes and sustain new leads is the meta question at the heart of Peacock’s The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a John Wick-less sequel set decades before Keanu Reeves ever snarled, “I’m thinking I’m back.” And though it seems more a test of concept than a complete saga, it’s a...

Keanu Reeves’ master assassin may have been left for almost dead at the end of the fourth John Wick film, but things are alive and kicking in the franchise, at least retroactively.
Or, to quote Mel Gibson, who plays the manager of the “precious” hotel for killers at the center of the ’70s and New York-set The Continental: From the World of John Wick: “Son of a bitch, where’s my f*ckin’ shotgun?”
With more than its fair share of Me Decade revolutionaries, rats (literal and figurative) and “fun fumes,” as Gibson’s feral Cormac exclaims, The Continental primarily is a throwback to the heroic bloodshed genre perfected by Ringo Lam and John Woo in the 1980s. With more than a nod or two to 2011’s The Raid, the limited series partially directed by Albert Hughes kicks bellbottomed butt in true John Wick style over its September 22-debuting three-part run on Peacock.

Why do people love the John Wick movies? Is it because of the charisma and soulfulness of star Keanu Reeves? Is it because of the jaw-dropping action sequences? Or is it because we’re all just fascinated by the gold coins, the High Table, and all the other rules and lore of the assassin world in which John and his friends and enemies operate?

With the success of the John Wick franchise, it was only a matter of time before we saw this impressive world expand. And now, audiences will get a closer look at The Continental for a special three-night event that begins this Friday, September 22nd. The new series, directed by Albert Hughes, focuses on a younger version of Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) and his brother Frankie (Ben Robson). Much like the feature films that inspired it, the exciting action and the fine collection of actors add yet another level to “The Continental: From the World of John Wick.” The cast includes Mishel Prada, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Nhung Kate, Jessica Allain, and many more.
