Revelatory
mehmet-genc30 May 2018
In this episode we travel to Kate's (Mr. Kaplan) past with flashbacks. In the present, she is busy preparing toward what seems to be an inevitable showdown with her former employer.

But it is not what she is doing now that tells us so much. It is the flashbacks. Not only do we learn some very valuable information about Kate's history, but about the past of other main characters as well. There were a lot of a-ha moments here for me. I think it would be fair to say that this episode brings the series full circle. I won't say more, you just need to watch it.

Overall a very strong, must-see episode. One of the best I've seen since the beginning.

This particular episode is the most "feel" episode ever on The Blacklist. After u bored with the same pattern of story. Now u watch story about Mr. Kaplan the way u never thought of (at least, I didn't expect that deep). Anyway, hats off to you Mr. Kaplan. F.

Mr. Kaplan, a backstory worthy of sympathy
vrahulrao27 November 2021
What a fantastic episode, for us to deeply feel for a character who'd betrayed our beloved protagonist means her story was rooted in tragedy.

So much relevant history is revealed in this episode, and we have a chance to understand more of the why as the webs of mystery become entangled.

Kate is a sympathetic antagonist now, but in the end, it is her choices that ultimately lead to this outcome.

To quote John Wick, consequences.

A requiem for a great character
foamythefearsome30 September 2022
This was an amazing feat of writing, providing an amazing backstory for one of my favorite characters in the show. I'm still conflicted about her fate, and I'm sad to see Kate as an enemy, especially after this sympathy-inducing masterpiece.

After seeing this, it made it so hard to root against her, which made the rest of the season interesting in a whole different way: in the previous (mid)season finales, you were faced with an enemy you hoped would perish at the end, and you're following Red's plan to accomplish that. Here, I can only hope that Red and Kate can reconcile their differences, because I would hate to see either of them go.

It was somewhat similar to Cape May, but because the setup was a little clearer, this one was instantly captivating. I loved to get to know her better before the final showdown!

Red Is the Villain

Warning: Spoilers
This is a flashback episode where we focus on the before and after of Mr. Kaplan. We get to know how she got that name. We get to know how Masha became her charge. We know how she became skilled in what she did for Raymond. We also see her as a positive character with great integrity. The description called her an enemy. Raymond is really the enemy. If she does him in, it will be because of his actions, not hers. There are some really strong scenes here, including an encounter with a state trooper who knocks on the door of her trailer and asks for identification. And then there is the call from Raymond who feels betrayed but who is the betrayer.
