The most famous Pennywise actor, Bill Skarsgård, has already made his name as a brilliant horror performer while starring not only in the two It movies, but also in the chilling series Hemlock Grove (2013–2015) and Castle Rock (2018–2019).
Continuing his major career trend, he also took part in a smaller-scale project, which didn’t suffer from its modest budget at all. On the contrary, it received lots of hype and even now, two years after its release, it is holding the second place in Netflix’s chart.
The movie’s plot revolves around the haunted house, and this trope is obviously used in an enormous number of horrors. However, here the monster, typically hiding in the basement, doesn’t turn out to be the main evil, damaging the characters the most.

One of the easiest ways to measure someone’s success is to count all the pop culture references that others make to them. In the case of Stephen King, they would probably hit a three-digit number, considering how many TV shows, movies, and other novel authors have been using King’s plots as an inspiration.
If you are interested to see 10 of the most popular TV shows that referred to King one way or the other, check out the list below.
Lost (2004-2010)
Heavily influenced by King's writing, Lost had no shortage of references and easter eggs to the author within the show. The most obvious are season 3 Juliet's choice of Carrie as a book club entry, and the future version of Jack reading a newspaper clipping with words like "Ted," "the Tower," and "beam" in it, all references to Stephen King's The Dark Tower.
Derry Girls (2018-2022)

In Apple TV+’s upcoming limited series, Jake Gyllenhaal is Presumed Innocent until proven guilty.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow — which of course previously begat the 1990 Harrison Ford/Greta Scacchi/Bonnie Bedelia film — the eight-episode series covers a horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhaal) is suspected of the crime. “The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together,” reads its official description.

HBO had the Lakers, now FX has the Clippers. Will the series’ fates differ (as the real-life teams’ have), or will “Clipped” face the same quick, quiet end as “Winning Time”? We’ll find out this June, when FX’s latest ripped-from-the-headlines adaptation premieres exclusively on Hulu. The trailer was released Thursday, April 25 — just under six weeks prior to the premiere — and now you can watch the first footage below.
Set in 2013, the six-episode limited series stars Ed O’Neill as L.A. Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling and Laurence Fishburne as the team’s head coach, Doc Rivers. Formerly with the Boston Celtics (who won an NBA title in 2008), Rivers had just joined the Clippers when the owner’s racist comments went public, sending the organization into a tailspin and Sterling into a power struggle with Rivers, players, and the NBA at large. While we all yearn for the 80s watching Stranger Things, in the 80s Stephen King cherished the memory of the 50s and his own childhood in dirty jeans and torn sneakers.
The holidays are coming to an end, but there is still time for one last adventure: somewhere over the bridge lies the body of a neighbor's boy. If you are the first to discover the body, you can become the hero of the whole neighborhood. And four boys are already on their way.
Stand By Me is one of King's most intimate and personal stories. It was not originally advertised as a film adaptation – the creators feared that the author's reputation in the horror genre would give people the wrong impression.
Fortunately, time has corrected this association, and now Rob Reiner's film is recognized as one of the best King adaptations.

Twin Peaks. Sunnydale. Castle Rock. Hawkins… America’s TV monopoly on small towns where Weird Stuff Happens has gone on for too long. Britain was once home to The Wicker Man, Children of the Stones and The Prisoner, all classics of the ‘something’s not right here’ genre. If you’ve been keeping up with The Test of Time, you have probably learned what the rules are in terms of what we tackle. Those rules, of course, are that there are no rules whatsoever and we cover whatever sounds good or we think would be an interesting topic. In the Mouth of Madness (watch it Here) came out in Italy in late 1994 and that means, gulp, that movie is now 30 years old. It came during an interesting time in the master of horrors career when he was running flop after flop and being disappointed by studios interference and stars that weren’t willing to be true collaborators. It’s the ending of a loose trilogy and in some people’s estimation his last great film. Is In the Mouth of Madness a tale that stands the Test of Time, or should it be put in the bargain bin...

Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel Anansi Boys is heading to the sequential art world of comics.
The 2005 novel, a New York Times best-seller that won the Locus and British Fantasy Awards, is being adapted by Dark Horse Comics, which has set screenwriter and comics author Marc Bernardin to pen what will be an eight-issue miniseries.
Shawn Martinbrough, perhaps best known as the longtime artist of the Robert Kirkman title Thief of Thieves as well as Marvel’s Luke Cage Noir, is drawing the book, which will have colors by Chris Sotomayor and letters by Jim Campbell. The first issue is due to hit stores June 26.
The novel told the travails of “Fat” Charlie Nancy, who leads a boring life as a boring Londoner until he discovers two things: that his recently deceased father was, in fact, Anansi, the trickster god of African folklore, and that he has a twin brother he’s never met.

It's hard to imagine anyone besides Alyson Hannigan as the unforgettable sidekick-turned-superpowered Willow Rosenberg in the hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but the casting directors almost went in a completely different direction. Indeed, the role nearly went to another accomplished television actor — Melanie Lynskey, the Emmy-nominated star of the acclaimed Showtime series "Yellowjackets."
The New Zealand actor kicked off her career with a leading role in Peter Jackson's 1994 film "Heavenly Creatures" opposite "Titanic" star Kate Winslet. She had also appeared in Jackson's 1996 horror-comedy "The Frighteners" -- which, like "Heavenly Creatures," was filmed in New Zealand — when she got the opportunity to audition for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

When you talk about John Sayles, do you talk about America? Watching and examining his beautiful tapestry of films, this reveals itself an easy question to ask and an easy question to answer. There may be no single filmmaker who has better captured the agony and ecstasy of the American experiment than Sayles. Yet his pictures never feel like homework. They’re funny, heartbreaking, and full of characters that are well-rounded and sharply drawn.
The Film Stage got the opportunity to speak with Sayles about his 1996 masterpiece Lone Star (now available on 4K and Blu-ray courtesy of the Criterion Collection), as well lesser-seen gems like Limbo, Go for Sisters, and Amigo.
Listen to an audio version of the interview below followed by a written version, edited for length and clarity.

Brian De Palma's "Carrie" was the film that defined a generation. Its blend of coming-of-age themes, fantastical magic, and slasher-style bloodshed makes it a genre-bending film that time just can't seem to forget.
The 1976 horror tells the story of a sheltered girl who lives under her obsessively religious mother's tyrannical rule, a dictatorship made all the worse by the onset of Carrie's period. Her mother's frenzy combined with a cruel prank at the prom pushes the shy young girl to a mental break, complete with telekinetic powers. The Stephen King adaptation launched some incredibly notable careers, including John Travolta, who plays high school bully Billy Nolan. Sadly, not all of the cast has lived to see the end of 2023, including Piper Laurie, whose performance as Carrie's mother earned her one of three Oscar nominations in her lifetime.

This article contains major spoilers for "Cobweb."
As anyone with arachnophobia can attest, there are few moments more horrible than looking up at the ceiling for the giant spider that was there only a moment ago, only to find nothing there. Well, except maybe the moment where the giant spider reappears on your pillow, a few inches away from your face. Samuel Bodin's 2023 horror film "Cobweb" preys on that kind of fear with a monster who is unseen for most of the movie's runtime, and who hides under on ceilings, under furniture, and inside the walls in the film's blood-soaked final act.
The fact that there even is a monster is hidden for much of the movie, which instead presents young Peter's (Woody Norman) parents, Carol (Lizzy Caplan) and Mark (Antony Starr), as human monsters who just might kill him and bury him in the pumpkin patch if he doesn't behave himself.

“How’s your marriage?”
What a long dark night it’s been on this trip through Stephen King’s 2011 collection Full Dark, No Stars. After traveling back to 1922 and taking a detour through Big Driver, Losers Justin Gerber, Rachel Reeves, and Jenn Adams make a pit stop in Derry for a nasty little tale of schadenfreude and revenge with the third tale of this sordid collection in Fair Extension.
Then, it’s full speed ahead to Castle Rock with the collection’s final novella A Good Marriage. Inspired by the horrific crimes of Btk, King’s story follows a happily married woman who finds a life-altering secret buried in her garage. Topics range from the ethics of True Crime storytelling, the fine line between art and exploitation, and the lies that get us through the day.

With so many streaming platforms and broadcast channels, it's a challenge for shows of any genre to find an audience and thrive. This is especially true of the horror genre, which feels more niche in appeal than sitcoms and prestige dramas. However, not every cancellation has to do with low viewership, particularly with recent changes across the entertainment industry. From studio politics to fickle viewer attention, some shows get cut short for the oddest of reasons.
These horror shows were each canceled for relatively unconventional reasons, not entirely having to do with ratings or production costs. With everything from acclaimed international productions to adaptations of popular licensed properties, nothing is safe from behind-the-scenes drama and obtuse content strategies. The only thing scarier than some of these shows is the inane rationale that ended them before their time.

Sometimes, dead is better. That’s the lesson in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, an origin tale about the ominous graveyard in Stephen King’s novel, which resurrects anything buried in it. Set in 1969, the film stars Jackson White as young Jud Crandall (played in the 1989 flick by Fred Gwynne), who discovers his family’s role in an age-old curse. If you’re making a production with J. Robert Oppenheimer in it, your casting call is likely to include Cillian Murphy.
As it turns out, Murphy — who plays the title role in Universal’s film box office hit — was also considered to play Oppenheimer in a short-lived TV series.
Manhattan, a show on WGN America nine years ago, was set in the Los Alamos, N.M. efforts to develop an atomic bomb. The series primarily centered on Frank Winter (played by John Benjamin Hickey), a physics professor leading the Manhattan Project.
J. Robert Oppenheimer appeared during the first season and in beefed up appearances in Season 2. But that was the last season for the series.
“When we were casting Oppenheimer, we went through a whole series of different ideas,” Lila Byock (The Leftovers), a writer on Manhattan and the wife of series creator Sam Shaw (Castle Rock), told Vanity Fair.

“Yellowjackets” season two may have officially wrapped on Showtime, but meat is still on the menu. The Ten-time Emmy nominated series heads home to DVD this October.
Look for “Yellowjackets” season two on DVD on October 10, 2023, from Paramount Home Entertainment. The DVD features all 9 episodes of the second season, and exclusive bonus content.
The series was created by Ashley Lyle & Bart Nickerson (“Narcos”), described as being “equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama.”
“Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

It’s hard to believe, but Cobweb star Lizzy Caplan hasn’t made a full-fledged horror movie until now. The genre is often a rite of passage for younger actors, especially modern-day performers, but surprisingly, the opportunities never came Caplan’s way despite launching her career 24 years ago. She started out with a handful of appearances on Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks, as well as the latter’s Undeclared, and she first got to know Seth Rogen through both of the aforementioned comedic projects. Oddly enough, Rogen’s production company, Point Grey, would bring her Chris Thomas Devlin’s Cobweb script two decades later.
In 2004, Caplan’s life forever changed by way of her breakout performance as the witty and brash Janis Ian in Tina Fey and Mark Waters’ now-classic comedy, Mean Girls. So, besides having an aversion to horror movies, Caplan tends to believe that...
