The best Devilman anime
Rectangular_businessman31 August 2020
While not entirely faithful to the source material, I think Masaaki Yuasa captured perfectly well its themes and essence, particularly its blatant anti-war themes, as well its overall disturbing bleakness.

A very effective horror tragedy anime series.

Not for everyone, but a masterpiece nonetheless.
fuderiki7 January 2018
So basically, this is an adaptation of the darkest manga of Go Nagai: DevilMan. Go Nagai was also creating TV Shows for kids (like Gurendaizer - Goldorak -, BomberX and Mazinger Z), so a manga as dark, crude and violent as DevilMan from the same author can be quite unsettling. However, the anti-war theme that we find in most works of Nagai is present here nonetheless, yet the exposition of this discourse involves a lot of disturbing violence. Graphically, this adaptation may look quite different from the original work of Nagai, it is narratively very faithful to the source material. The storyline follows the manga, but modernizes a lot of things in the storytelling. Smartphones, internet, social networks, among other things are included seamlessly in the plot without denaturing it, on the contrary, it adds a lot to the message of the original work. The unique animation and direction style of Yuasa adds a lot to the freshness of the overall experience.

However, this is still DevilMan, it is raw, harsh, there is abuse, sex, drugs, nudity and violence. The overall experience is a cruel, nihilistic, emotional rollercoaster. The story is quite grandiloquent, and we can still feel a certain narration style from the 70s. But it is definitely a good anime that reminds of pre-2000s mangas, when nothing was ever half-baked if it serves the discourse.

If you are prone to get offended, do not watch DevilMan, but if what I said above still appeals to you, go watch it ! It's damn good. (no pun intended)

I am happy that Netflix supports this kind of uncensored productions. I've recently watched "The end of the F***ing World" and "Black Mirror Season 4," it definitely feels good to have more things with substance on Netflix recently, and DevilMan Crybaby is definitely on the Anime side of this good wave that makes me like Netflix again.

Warning: Spoilers
Growing up in usa i was excited to see ninja scroll, akira, ghost in the shell back in the 80's. There werent too many anime series available, now a days we have the anime universe in the palm of our hands cause of the net. There are thousands of anime series and movies, yet devilman still stands out in many different ways. Im surprised netflix featured devilman cause of the mature themes. It is down right gore and raw in every way possible. It basically does not give two cents about any of that cause its a big part of the concept. The duality of man, good and evil. Do we have demons within us, are we more good than bad, how is the balance maintained, who is winning if anybody, what is the endgame, etc. This anime is targeted to the 21 and over group. Its very psychological, philosophical, religious, spiritual, funny, sexy, slice of life but most of all, demonic. There will be lots of viewers who will turn away before the 1st ep even ends. The art is very good and unique. The storyline is quite unique as well and its pace is pretty steady. It keeps rockin it steady and knows how to have fun. 2018 anime is starting off guns blazing! Its almost like a continuous party with lots of great music, mostly rock and hiphop. So even if your not into all the spiritual stuff, its still one hell of a ride. Overall its a deep and dark concept but enjoys itself along the way. Hopefully there will be light at the end of the tunnel for the viewers experiencing the trials and tribulations of the devilman.

I can't stop thinking about it, now that it's over.
Achyut_Prashast_Singh3 August 2020
I have recently starting getting into anime, thanks to Netflix. As I came across Devilman Crybaby, I watched the trailer and it seemed like an entertaining series. But I had no idea it would be so great. Each and every episode was very well written and animated, but what left me deeply intrigued was how it made me root for the characters. Especially episode 9, that gave me chills and not just because it was violent or gory, but because the emotional undercurrents were something I had never experienced before. I am still unable to stop thinking about it as I type this review.

Devilman Crybaby is an outstanding, dark action horror that is strictly not meant for kids. While some of the explicit content was played for comedic purposes, I found a lot of it scarier than any live-action film/series. That being said, it's strictly NOT for kids. There's heavy sexual content, the action sequences are gory and the tone is extremely dark. So beware, some of the moments in the series would be really hard-hitting and emotionally charged for sensitive viewers to handle.

Anyways, Devilman Crybaby is a well-made show that is everything one could hope for from a near-perfect series of this genre: action-packed, scary and emotionally haunting. One word for the soundtrack, without which this review is far from complete. The music is excellent, and something I'd like to go back to again and again.

That being said, if you're mature enough to handle a dark, grim action series that perfectly combines action, horror, humor, tearjerker moments and an epic soundtrack with unforgettable characters, wait no more and watch this series instantly. Trust me, if you happen to like it, you too won't be able to forget it for quite a time. Chances are it might haunt you, not because it's scary but because of how emotionally impactful it is.

A reimagined masterpiece.
I3R0K3N7FEET11 January 2018
Devilman embodied everything anime was about when I was younger. Fantastic animation, brutal, shocking blood gore, and simple disdain for taboo.

If you are familiar with Devilman, you will appreciate the throwbacks and wall breaking references, and reworked scenes from the past, however, if you have not read the original manga, the themes that follow in Devilman Crybaby are actually a mix of the original anime with the manga (which varied a bit), consolidating the story in glorious fashion.

Devilman Crybaby is packed with symbolism, scenes that are funny and real, the relationships are believable, the animation style works fantastically, while the OST is outright jaw dropping. Even if you aren't a fan of anime, you should should give Devilman Crybaby a chance, especially as Netflix has done a fantastic job creating a high quality English dub so it doesn't sound like a corny kids TV show. A perfect example of what anime is really about. (Hint. its a scarily realistic reflection of mankind and our strained relationships.)

Devilman is back!
franco-km86 January 2018
As I long time fan of devilman i was highly surprised that Netflix was making a total new anime of the master piece created by Go Nagai decades ago. I tought that maybe we would see a censored version of this horror and adult anime, but God, i was wrong. This is one the best anime that i´ve seen in my life. The gore, the sex, the violence is all there. But this anime goes even further. Explores subjects as drugs, the good and bad side of every single human, fate, religion, friendship and love. The animation and the music is also superb. The Ost is so good that you´ll found yourself listening the songs again and again. Maasaki Yuasa, thanks for Making Akira Fudo fights evil once more!

Not for the Faintest of Hearts
DeBBss22 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Devilman: Crybaby is the darkest and most nihilistic anime I have ever seen. I usually like nihilistic films and shows, but Devilman: Crybaby is on another level. All of you're favorite character will either become a demon and die or die in the most disturbing ways possible. Miki Makimura's death and aftermath is one of the most disturbing scenes I have ever seen. It's a truly horrifying mini-series that doesn't hold anything back.

When it comes to the plot, it has a lot of technical issues. There's a lot of plot holes and a lot of underdeveloped plot devices. Devilman: Crybaby doesn't give a lot of exposition that is drastically needed in such a plot. Luckily, the story and pacing is good enough to look past these issues.

Overall, Devilman: Crybaby is a series that is not for everyone. It's extremely brutal, profound, and dark. I liked the fight scenes and story, but it's hard to get over how sad the ending truly is. One thing I do want to mention is that, in my opinion, Devilman: Crybaby is not a masterpiece. There's too many issues for it to be labeled "masterpiece".

Great anime
reddice2611 January 2020
Even though I am not familiar with the source material, I decided to watch this anime. The first couple of episodes, I felt were ok-ish. What I did not realize is that this was setting up the story for the second half of the series, which is where the show really shines. It is then that it becomes immensely brutal and uses the background of the first episodes to build on. Blood and gore go hand in hand with the drama that unfolds in front of your eyes. I was shocked to see just how brutal it becomes and had to fight against the tears on some moments. If you're looking for a feel-good anime, this is not for you.

If there is one bad thing I can say about this show, it is that it's too short. With 1 or 2 episodes more, they could have clarified some background stories and made the final battle more intense. The ending is thought provoking (in fact much more than neon genesis), but if a bit more time had been invested, it would have gone into the history books as a classic for sure.

One of the best animes on Netflix and highly recommended.

Brilliantly Animated, Fast Paced, Yet Shallow
DanTheMan7773 February 2020
The Good: Devilman Crybaby is certainly worth a watch if any of the promotional imagery or description tickles your fancy, and was my first delve into the franchise. It's filled with aggressive sex (that's only a short walk away from being hentai), visceral gore, superb synthwave style music that gives a real "underground" vibe and explosive animation. The character designs of the demons are also quite aesthetically pleasing/intriguing, particularly of Devilman himself. The fantastic action scenes, intense soundtrack and fast pacing of the show make it so that you'll never become bored, which is a blessing as the show probably wouldn't hold up without them. The very ending was also unexpected and somewhat refreshing, with an interesting moral and a conclusion that makes it possible to tie in Devilman Crybaby as a sequel/prequl to every other previous/future Devilman story respectively. The show is also apparently very faithful to the original manga.

The Average: The (dub) voice acting is not exceptional but still perfectly acceptable by anime standards so there are no real issues there. There are also certain moments where the animation quality seems to take a bit of a nose dive, but whether this is the result of the director's (Masaaki Yuasa) fairly unique style is up for debate.

The Bad & The Ugly: Where the problems really begin is with the story. The story's basic plot points are interesting enough, although they never really have a chance to develop properly and there are plenty of moments that bring up questions that are never actually answered. This ranges from "world building" related questions to characters that just turn up, act like we know that they're a big deal and then vanish, never to be spoken of again. These instances are fairly unimportant and can be glossed over quite easily but as a Devilman first-timer it's very confusing. Some people may take more issue than me with the logistics of the story not making much sense at times but... eh, it's an action anime so y'know. The characterisation is also pretty flat. Almost all of the characters stay exactly as they start off as which makes any twists or revelations either entirely predictable from the start or just dull, not because the twist is bad, but because you just don't really care. The only characters that I kind of felt for by the end were the rapper guys (who can basically be treated as one singular character for the most part), Miki "Miko" Kuroda, Akira Fudo (Devilman) and Ryo Asuka (within the show's closing seconds). That's not to say that they're bad character templates, but that's all they ever are, templates.

Conclusion: If it looks cool to you just watch it. You'll have a fun time and at worst you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. If it gets a sequel I'll certainly be watching it if you want to put it that way. If you're looking for something more emotional, in-depth and that is a bit more intellectually stimulating however, this probably isn't it.

Almost perfect
AviB408717 November 2021
Devilman: Crybaby is a really good anime that I would recommend watching if you are an adult (there are really mature themes in this show, so I would recommend children to stay away).

Pros:

  • Really good overarching religious themes and symbolism
  • Puts into question what is good and what is bad
  • critique on human nature / mob mentality
  • Really good writing (rap scenes were fantastic!)

Cons:

  • weak character development, I had a hard time caring about what happened to certain characters. This could have been solved by making the series longer and spending time developing the characters. Although this is tough to ask for only a 10 episode miniseries.

Good; just not great like everyone's making it out to be.
Devilman Crybaby is an interesting show to say the least; it's a modernised adaptation of Go Nagai's classic manga, Devilman, from the 70s; and boy what a change from the source material's aesthetic this went through. Devilman: Crybaby is an interesting slice of animation from Netflix; it's not an American import but rather a Japanese anime that was exclusively licensed for the Netflix service. It starts off strongly with its edgy and fast-paced premiere episode, but for me it fizzled out around episodes 2 & 3, and then started picking up the pace and focus again by episode 6. It's tonally uneven at times and doesn't seem to focus on any one given thing in the story, but it's still an ambitious effort nonetheless.

Devilman is as classic an anime property as Lupin the Third, Astro Boy, Cyborg 009, Space Pirate Captain Harlock and even Kimba the White Lion. It's been in the background of the Japanese pop-cultural scene since 1972, and it's cool that properties like these can be reimagined in several ways, kind of like how there are various adaptations of iconic characters, such as Superman and Sherlock Holmes, around the world. I wonder if this will result in a Mazinger Z series or movie?

Devilman: Crybaby; perfectly okay stuff that's well worth any otaku's time on the internet. Beware though: recommended for otaku aficionados only. Anyone outside that demographic will fall most likely fall asleep while watching it.

Expecting a lot more
truebeliever-7523730 January 2018
I really like dark stories, but I never connected with Devilman Crybaby. The story is very dark to the very end, but it feels less than satisfying if you want something more than violence and gore. Characters feel flat; the sense of justice of Devilman is very warped (a human killing others is a murderer and it is not spared because he has emotions); the points raised by the anime are not fully explored, and easily discarded; story seems rushed and superficial, specially the end. And the animation, although a lot of people will disagree with me, bad.

I didn't expect the end, but I will not comment to avoid spoilers. It was a surprising end.

Pretty amazing from many different standpoints
cognitivelapse7 January 2018
I have not watched any of the previous Devilman movies/series/read the manga. Actually, I randomly stumbled upon this and decided to watch the first episode. And all I have to say is WOW. The art is awesome. The story is awesome. The psychological aspect of the anime is awesome (Black Mirror-esque).

This is like Black Mirror, crossed with Hellsing, crossed with awesome.

If you like fantasy, scifi, anime, you will be a fan.

You will not be a fan if you do not like blood, killing, action, fun, life in general.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)

mossikukulas-2131421 November 2021
I don't give a 10 lightly.

I'm very picky but this is not an anime for everyone.

If you've had enough of the same anime cliches over and over and you want something amazing and different then watch it!

Fantastic job in all fronts.

I'm in awe.

This is a strange...masterpiece.
lanycera13 January 2018
This anime is actually true to the manga, not like the 1972 TV version. It is cruel, bloody and in the end, it really touched me.

It may look very strange at first glance, but it got really interesting from episode 3 onwards, so give is a little bit of time if you are hesitant on the first two episodes.

Devilman has a good length (although I wouldn't have complained about 1-2 more to explain the archaeology part/demon background a bit more - the manga did a bit of a better job here I believe), since it's very common with Anime's nowadays to stretch it out over many episodes and seasons.

It's visually stunning, the narrative style very different, and the soundtrack great. An amazing anime, I loved watching it. It touched some sensitive topics, how humans treat each other and what's the real evil in this world.

I'm actually happy that Netflix supported this kind of production - I kind of would've expected them to censor it more, but it's perfect the way it is.

An incredibly well done series that does justice to the Devilman brand (Non-Spolier and Spoiler Review)
badcgishark7 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Nonspoiler review and a Spoiler-Heavy review:

NONSPOILER: Devilman: Crybaby is the latest in the Devilman anime series. There are numerous animated versions of this brand that date back to decades ago with a (now rather hokey old Speed Racer anime type show) Japanese television series. The series was revisited numerous times, most notably in the 90's when the MANGA brand brought back the show for a mini-series that updated the animation style, violence, and it was one of the bigger anime shows of the Western anime boom in the mid to late 90's. Devilman: Crybaby succeeds in bringing the brand to 2018 with a wonderfully well executed animation style, fast-paced plot, great characters, and doesn't have any of the hokey Japanese anime humor that often falls flat for Western Audiences.

I would recommend this show to anyone interested in a fast-paced, violent, action packed animated series that is written well and doesn't fall into many of the traps that other anime series fall into. This is an anime series that is catered towards western audiences, which may or may not be a good thing. I see a previous review that was upset with the nihilistic nature of the show and I agree that this is a very hard, NC-17, watch at times though, so be prepared.

SPOILER HEAVY: . . . Damn this show caught me off guard. I had seen it advertised a few weeks ago and was intrigued. I have seen a number of the Devilman branded animated shows; the original one I watched about a dozen episodes of 15 years ago when I picked up a cheap DVD set of it and thought it was ok, but I really enjoyed the 90's MANGA mini-series version of Devilman while I was a teenager in the 1990's.

Devilman: Crybaby's first half doesn't have much new if you have already seen the 90's mini-series. It has the same main characters with the same methods to turn Akira into Devilman, and also has some of the same enemy fights (the bird-woman, the turtle thing that ate Akira's parents with the faces shell) that are fought in the same style. What the first half does help with is building Ryo as the antagonist and also establishes about a dozen other characters who really help in expanding the scope of the series.

It is also a breath of fresh air that this series knows when to hold back and when to let loose. There are too many anime series where the stakes seem to never be high enough to really care about the characters. KuroMukuro is a prime example of this; the fact that there are cyborg aliens attacking the Earth seems to be almost a non-issue at times. Knights of Sidonia also fell victim to this in the second season as it felt like there is no sense of urgency in these shows. Other shows like Attack on Titan fall in the other group; always at a 10 with no real character development.

Devilman: Crybaby's first half helps to build the world and extra characters of the series. An example of this is the beat-box rappers seem to be one dimensional at first, but we actually care about them. Watching "Beta" Miki obsessing over her inability to beat her rival in running and go to the extreme of becoming a demon is another great part of the series before the second half when everything goes to hell, and damn does it go to hell in the second half.

After President Trump's brief first Anime Appearance of the year where the world finds out about the demons, the entire world goes to hell. The show goes from being about Akira fighting demons to the people of the world going crazy, not knowing who could be infected as a demon. It reminded me of Steven Carpenter's remake of The Thing on a grander scale and shows the dark side of humanity where panic can cause people to turn on one another and revert back to primal instincts. Ryo's trick news conference was analogous with some of the ultra-conservative movements currently happening around the world that vilify anyone who does not seem to be a "normal" citizen. Seeing the brutality of the mob-rules vigilante justice is hard to watch but also not hard to imagine.

Seeing the relationship with Mika and Miko end with them trying to save one another, even with all the animosity between them, was something else that was well done.

Ryo turning out to be Satan himself was a rather unique twist as was the series ending with Akira's death and God destroying the world and rebuilding it again back to its original form. The viewer is left to wonder if this is a cycle that has repeated before and/or is it a cycle that will continue to repeat endlessly.

Also of note, Akira does run close to Mary Sue/Gary Stu territory at times as a character who cannot do anything bad, but he eventually does break bad towards the end by killing the humans that killed his friends.

The gratuitous nudity, sex, violence, and just straight up weird shit (Akira having a wet-dream as a demon and waking up to his ceiling covered in cum was nasty as hell) is probably a turn-off for many and I can see why some people would write-off the series because of it.

That being said, this is a solid 9/10 for me and a great addition to the growing Netflix catalogue.

Violent
Lain6668 June 2020
Devilman: Crybaby is about a sensitive boy who merges with a demon. It is animated by Science Saru.

This show is very dark. It is also very sexual and violent. The plot is structured well and is also good. The animation is very fluid and crisp. It captures the mood very well. The characters are interesting and their character designs are great. The show is a bit unrealistic, to how humans act.

The voice acting was great. I preferred the sub to the dub.

I would recommend this to people looking for a violent, dark and sexual anime.

Highly overrated and pretentious animation.
RoysR12316 January 2018
In today's generation, there isn't any value for good plot or characters, even in the beginning if there was any sight of hope, with each passing episodes it turn into misery, and the amount of unrequited horrifying nudity is insane, I won't be surprised if you guys started having demon fetishes after watching this so called cartoonish anime, characters will die out of nowhere, people will do things without any logic.

Deals with some mature themes, immaturely.
toxicpilgrim16 March 2018
This new series does treat the original source with respect, but I think tonally, and thematically it's pretty lacking. Some of the humor works, mostly in an awkward sense. I recommend the excellent series 'Kemonozume' if you'd like to see something with very similar themes, but treated more maturely (and bizarrely), with tons of style.

Overrated Garbage
capnsquigglez9 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
TLDR: DMCB lacks any substance or quality that makes a good anime. If you want something dark and edgy that explores humanity's flaws, watch Neon Genesis. That said, if you like watching people get eviscerated and titties, you'll probably like this.

I've watched a fair bit of anime in my day and thought I'd give this a try and from episode 1, I knew it was bad. I kept watching because I liked the animation style and hoped it would get better but unfortunately, the show as a whole is poorly done and has little to no merit on it's own. For context, I've not read the original manga and not seen much of Masaaki Yuasa's directing before but I imagine he would be ashamed of this compared to his other work. I'm judging this show based on it's soundtrack, allegory and themes, animation, storyline and character development and overall vibe it's trying to project. There are minor spoilers that aren't integral to the plot but are still bothersome.

For starters, the sound design for this show was probably one of it's best aspects. Any scenes featuring japanese rap or slam poetry were genuinely entertaining and the music complemented the tone of the scenes and themes of the anime pretty well. There's not much to say other than that but it's the only reason it deserves 2 stars.

The themes of the show aren't terribly presented but honestly can't be considered incredibly unique or edgy enough to deserve praise. The main characters goal is to basically stop evil from coming into the world but one is a huge douche from the start and immediately the theme is "Do the ends justify the means." There's also allegory for racism, xenophobia, etc. shoved down your throat because humanity assumes that all demons are evil. But guess what? Demons end up being all evil anyway. It was trying to say something like humanity was responsible for it's own downfall but there was a huge lack of subtlety and scenes that ended up contradicting themselves basically tore this scene apart. Besides that, people are inherently sinful in the show, kind of mirroring demonic behavior to say once again "who's really evil?" but the answer is still demons. The show tries to be introspective and critical of human behavior by showing graphic amounts of gore and nudity but these scenes are used so frequently that it stops adding to the plot at all after episode 1. It wasn't particularly shocking to me or anything, it just wasn't conducive to good writing or good directing.

Speaking of directing, let's talk about the animation. Looking at stills, you might get excited for the animation style. There are some great stills to be found in the show but for the majority, the animation is hot garbage. I haven't studied animation extensively, and I honestly liked the art style in some scenes, but for the most part, the animation is done so lazily. It's clear that budget was an issue for the show. It's hard to explain but when you watch the show critically, you'll see choppy movements, scenes too dark to make anything out, scenes where no characters have faces, animation cycles repeated excessively, just so much wrong that's done better in virtually every other anime.

There are also anime out there with much better stories. The storyline and character development are paced awfully. The villain's main motivation is just to kill humans because he's evil and the hero's motivation is to kill demons because he's good, which defeats the whole point of having a theme like "who's really evil?" There are a couple mini bosses for the main hero to defeat that amount to nothing and aren't reincorporated at any point after they're gone. Here's where the spoilers come in. One demon is in love with the main character's devil form, so he rapes and kills her. This was built up to for several episodes and there was no sign of character development afterwards and is never mentioned again. The only thought that comes from this was "What if demons aren't all bad?" which is swiftly answered by a "lol no, they definitely are" from the main character's best friend. The second mini boss looks like basically just a stronger version of the main character. Boom, the protagonist kills him in one hit. Wow, cool, good thing you only spent 30 seconds building up to him, Yuasa. Honestly, it might as well be satirical, and if you're looking for that, watch One Punch Man. Finally, the main character's best friend made it his goal to kill all demons because they were evil. Then, in episode 9, changes his mind when he finds out he's a demon. It was honestly such a shitshow what they tried to do with this character. They tried to paint him as this genius who wanted to save humanity and stuck by his convictions to a fault, but he displayed actions that showed he was a retard with no loyalty to anyone but himself. Anyone could call that he was going to be the main boss from like episode 5 at the latest. No characters had any real motivations other than good for the sake of being good or bad for the sake of being bad, and they would sometimes flip a coin to see which they were going to be that episode. Because of this, nobody looks like they have real relationships and any character actions or bonds they hold to each other are unconvincing. I've only read the plot summary for the original manga but it makes far more sense than what this show is trying to portray.

The overall tone of the show is trying to be dark and edgy and make itself more important than it deserves to be. What the director lacked in writing ability, good animators, and storyline, he made up for in trying to make the show as gross as possible. As mentioned above, it wasn't shocking to me, just excessive. At a certain point, there's no impact from seeing blood and tits, it's just more fucking blood and tits that doesn't add to anything. Gore essentially turned into filler when it lost it's shock value and it's a shame that the show is being hailed as some sort of "edgy masterpiece" when you stop caring about god damn anything that it throws at you. Some might consider it part of what the director was going for: to prove to the viewer that he could numb you to the horrors of the world, but that's giving him too much credit for how terrible everything else about this is.

So, to wrap it up, the best way to experience this show is to watch a slideshow of the few well animated parts of the show overlaid with the rap and slam poetry they do. The animation is poorly done for the most part, the gore is excessive past the point of being edgy or adding to the show in any way, the writing lacks any subtlety, the characters have no depth or motivations, the pacing is god awful, the show pretends to be deeper than it is, there's nothing to care about in this show. It's not laughably bad but it's terrible to the point that I felt it warranted a review. If you look at other reviews that praise it, you'll see that they all say "people can't take the edginess" but all these reviews are symbolic of the anime: they're made by retards and they have nothing important to say.

Amazing piece of work

Don't usually gush over anime anymore but Netflix has been bringing it lately. Great story, amazing art work, and a little cerebral to boot.
