Probably still his biggest triumph

"Lose Yourself" is a song by Eminem from 2002 (15th anniversary this year) used to promote his movie "8 Mile" and these almost 5.5 minutes we got here are the official music video for the song. In terms of significance, it needs to be said that this one won the Oscar back then and upset U2's Gangs of New York number, so it is definitely quite a bit of an underdog story when a white boy from Missouri wins an Oscar with a rap song. Pretty unusual. Maybe they also gave it to Eminem for the project "8 Mile" as a whole as this film is pretty well-received. Now back to this one here: Listening to it makes Eminem's talent undeniable. It may not be as strong on the visual side as I found the music video relatively forgettable. At least these scenes from "8 Mile" don't get me curious to a level where I would wanna see the film in the next couple days. Anyway, as with everything Eminem does there is a bit of an autobiographical note to this one too. And lets be honest, it requires something special to make the occasionally slightly pretentious lyrics work out as well as they do here. Oscar-worthy it is not I would say, but it's still pretty good and in my opinion among the best Eminem has released during his long and still ongoing career. He was only 30 back then. Go check it out and as I am generally not a huge hip hop or rap music fan, my praise for the project and artist means quite something.
