"I can't be a part of this!" "You already are." Dark Star Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie revenge horror thriller called Abigail, not to be confused with the other horror revenge thriller Becky and its sequel this year The Wrath of Becky. Similar ideas but not really the same... Set in 1976, a troubled teen befriends her bullied neighbor, seeking revenge on his tormentors, but her obsession turns deadly. Abigail takes a liking to the lonely boy next door and helps him fight back. As she takes him under her wing, the secrets of her past begin to surface. Starring Ava Cantrell, Tren Reed-Brown, Hermione Lynch, Gene Farber, and Karimah Westbrook. So is the twist in this that she is some kind of badass serial killer or something? A strange film, the footage does not look good. Makes sense they're dumping it on VOD this fall. // Continue...

Dark Star Pictures has nabbed the North American rights to the teen horror flick Abigail from director Melissa Vitello and starring Ava Cantrell.
A theatrical release in select theaters is planned for Dec. 2023, followed by transactional home entertainment sales. “Abigail is a wild descent into the teen psyche. The film brings important topics like bullying, racism, mental health and gender stereotypes to the forefront while staying true to the core horror genre, giving audiences a thoughtful experience painted in bloody throwback fun,” Dark Star president Michael Repsch said in a statement.
Abigail is set in 1976 where Abigail Cole, a troubled teen played by Cantrell, and her mother move to a small Alabama town in hopes of escaping the girl’s violent past. She befriends the boy next door, Lucas, who is mercilessly bullied by a group of kids at school.

"This gift... it has awakened in you." Well Go USA has released a new trailer for the indie sci-fi steampunk fantasy film from Russia titled just Abigail, which opened in Russia late last summer. It's skipping theaters and going straight to DVD/VOD here in the Us, but if you're curious about checking out this high concept steampunk flick, it might be worth a look anyway. Tinatin Dalakishvili stars as Abigail, or Abby, a woman who lives in town that closes itself off and walls itself in after a "mysterious illness", a cover up to contain people with powers. Going against the authorities to find her father, Abby learns that her city is actually full of magic. Despite being made in Russia, they speak English in the film making it an easier sell around the world. This gets pretty wild once they start getting into all the powers and magic...

Here are some of the surprises and hidden gems, with some input from the programmers themselves.
Crowdpleasers and Craziness in Competition
The U.S. dramatic competition always foregrounds filmmakers at early stages of their careers (like “Farewell” director Lulu Wang and “Clemency” winner Chinonye Chukwu). Several entries vying for the Grand Jury prize this year are making the jump from the festival’s Next section into the big leagues. These include “Shirley,” Josephine Decker’s long-awaited biopic of gothic author Shirley Jackson,...
