A Revealing Relational Drama for Women
tabuno11 February 2018
This short eight-episode Japanese television series is about a fascinating interwoven story of four women that appear to have had relationships with the same man. An older woman, well known for her earlier television series and female advice counselor, conducts interviews with these women in an effort to develop a new television series script. Not so much comedy as indicated on the IMDb, this series is more part drama, part mystery, and offers up a creative cinema experience through the use of split screen, voice over narrative by the principle character who invisibly to the series characters inhabits some of the scenes that she recalls to the audience. The first four episodes and the last four episodes seem to have the greatest overlap as scenes are shot and replayed later from different character perspectives. This series is much more dramatic and serious than Good Morning Call (2016) or Mischievous Kiss (2013). Nonetheless, the drama isn't soap operatic and comes across in a way that is captivating and revealing. For the most part, the individual lives of the characters come of age throughout the series in a quite acceptable and satisfying way. Except for the last episode that seems a bit choppy and rushing towards the conclusion, this series is well worth the experience, especially for women going through relationships.

A jaded screenwriter mines the stories of women seeking advice for their love challenges to gain material to use for her own work.

A jaded screenwriter mines the stories of women seeking advice for their love challenges in order to gain material for her own cynical work. A strange man named Ito, who we only meet third-hand through much of the series, is the common thread and is formative to all the women's lives.

This is a strange and unique form of story-telling, with five intriguing, interwoven stories that fall into lock-step nicely by the end. Nothing is as it seems. There is an unsettled feel, where the characters don't necessarily get what they had set out thinking they wanted, but end up with something important nonetheless. Well worth the watch. Filled with solid acting. A good, thought provoking story.

Really well written and funny! I ended up binge watching it and recommending it to quite a lot of people who want something light and easy to watch with a different storyline!
