Open End: Jerry Lewis (1965)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

This episode of Open End has David Susskind interviewing the one and only Jerry Lewis. If you're a fan of the comic legend then you're certainly going to enjoy this interview. This is the first episode I've seen from the series so I can't compare it to anything else that Susskind did but I must say that I loved the format and I loved the actual questioning. I mean, can you imagine anyone from today taking these kinds of questions? Lewis gets aggravated a couple different times when Susskind starts to ask his opinion on film critics and why he feels that he has so many people rooting against him. Lewis is also asked about his two-hour television show, which was a major disaster when it was released and the actor also opens up about his break up with Dean Martin. You have to give Lewis a lot of credit for answering the questions honestly and he even goes as far to blame himself for the break up. Lewis really does come across as a snob here but it was great getting to hear how he really feels about a wide range of subjects including him talking about what director's he respects as well as him answering if Jerry, the director, can keep Jerry the actor under control.
