William and Adso cordially welcome the other Franciscan delegation members, who arrive on foot, and politely the Dominican opponents, but shiver learning the pope appointed dreaded Bernardus Gui his representative, wounded like the huntress. Adso is in time to free his peasant lover from a monk-set game trap, yet her grateful willingness to make love turns too scary by raped nightmare memory. The abbot pulls rank to restrict William's authority in conducting the murder investigation, which both fear Gui may take over. Having deciphered the code, William instructs Adso to help him annotate the maze of cells on a map of the abbey library to collect initials as further clues, in the process finding more evidence, such as William's stolen spectacles, and hidden books. Flashbacks to the 'revolutionary' Dolcino heresy period show several monks' traumas and ensuing loyalty or hatred.
