Good acting from a much older Kevin Bacon , his portrayal of Jackie Rohr is outstanding , a person everyone should hate.

Slight anachronism

I know this is a weird thing to fixate on but would Decourcy's hair have been that short in the very early 90's?

With Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as Executive Producers. This early 1990s set crime drama owes a lot to Affleck's The Town.

The pairing of Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge also reminded me of 48 Hours.

Bacon plays hard living and corrupt FBI agent Jackie Rohr. Not too far removed from the burnt out cop played by Nick Nolte. Hodge is the clean cut black Assistant DA Decourcy Ward who wants to clean up Boston's corrupt legal system.

Cops do not like Ward because he once wanted bad cops to do jail time and he is black. Cops also do not like Rohr because he always gets away with his scams. It is something Ward finds out as Rohr wants to stop one of his informant's from being prosecuted for shooting a cop.

This is a solid hard boiled and gritty crime drama. The first episode shows this two contrasting characters and the lives they lead. By the end Ward realises he needs someone like Rohr. Someone who needs the system inside out and all the loopholes. Rohr is a law graduate as well.

The catalyst is a an armoured car robbery with the security guards missing. The heist has been carried out by some blue collared workers who have no plans to stop. Ward wants to lead the case against them hence why he needs Rohr on his side.

There is a lot that is derivative but it is also interesting. It maintained my attention. There was some intricate storytelling going on which I can sense future episodes will develop.

Shows some promise but the pilot is a mix of good and bad

There is certainly a lot to get excited about here, a gritty crime drama with an early '90s Boston backdrop featuring a strong cast. The writing in this first episode tempered my excitement a little bit though. The dialogue is lazy and shoves exposition down your throat. Nobody in real life walks around saying "hey, remember who I am, how I got here and why I act the way I do?", especially not to people that already know all that. However, in this episode it happens a lot. I certainly would prefer to learn these details naturally over the course of the series. Hopefully after this first episode the writers have gotten that out of their system and can proceed with the storytelling, but until I see that I would give this a mild but hopeful recommendation.

Warning: Spoilers
As a fan of Leverage and Underground I am glad to see Aldis Hodge back on TV, but this doesn't seem like the right role for him. Kevin Bacon essentially doing a slightly more serious of Frank Gallagher from Shameless is entertaining, but overall this show is a little all over the place.

It doesn't quite seem like they know what they're doing long or short-term with this show but there is promise in it.
