This is not a rom/com. I can't say there is any comedy. So I was probably set up to dislike this movie because I expected it to be a kind of opposite to a fake boyfriend/marriage story, but some funny situations. Definitely not. For one thing, a good half of the movie was something like one of those slave bride stories you hear about in Africa except without the abuse or forced consummation. (Robert never forces physical intimacy.) Nevertheless the first half just made me angry for what they were doing to Angela.
But I had problems beyond that. There was never any chemistry between the leads. I never understood why Angela would love Robert. To make matters worse, so many things happen in the last third or quarter of the movie and it was confusing. At one point there are flashbacks mixed with the current period and things bouncing around. It was very confusing.
I depend a lot on closed captions especially when there are ethnic accents. My closed captions missed somewhere between 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 lines especially at critical points. I did rewind a whole bunch of times and still had trouble picking up the words without the CC.
From the beginning I had no respect for Robert. It didn't help my early impressions that a few things weren't explained until later about what went on between Robert and his dad before the wedding. Even knowing what is revealed later, I still see Robert as weak, but early on I couldn't believe how much of a wimp he seemed. (I never liked Tom.)
Angela was very appealing, but I did wonder what kind of skill set she would have if she had to leave home.
I wanted a rom/com but even given that there was never and "com", I wanted romance and there was too little of that.
