Heading into Cannes, where it has four films in official selection and three projects participating in the Great 8 showcase, BBC Film has unveiled further details about its upcoming slate.
Among new projects in advanced development is Remi Weekes’ follow-up to His House, which is being produced by Tanya Segatchian and John Woodward’s Bright Star. Details for the untitled feature are being kept under wraps but BBC Film director Eva Yates told Screen: “It’s not a horror.”
Also in advanced development is Raine Allen-Miller’s second feature after Rye Lane, a south London-set heist comedy that she has also written.

As Netflix’s library of films ebbs and flows, finding the right movie to watch can feel like bailing out an ocean with a spoon. And if you’re looking for a quality horror movie in particular, the search only gets harder. With the reality that Horror is one of the cheapest genres to produce, streamers like Netflix are cluttered with a veritable tsunami of bloody titles that sometimes seem indistinguishable from one another.
If you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch on Netflix that will truly scare you, picking a final selection can prove a more daunting task than sitting through yet another “Haunting of Hill House” rewatch; with or without its beloved “Bly Manor” chaser. But while the streamer’s priorities seem to shift as quickly as its content selection grows, Netflix’s horror library remains a high point — with original triumphs, including Guillermo del Toro...

There are two types of horror movie enthusiasts: those who are looking for something genuinely scary and live for the adrenaline rush of watching it, and those who are constantly looking for something so unbelievably creepy that it makes the movie oddly entertaining but not scary at all. Luckily, both groups can find what they are looking for on Netflix.

The trope of the house, haunting its inhabitants, is a widespread one in horror flicks since Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice to the hyped Insidious and The Conjuring franchises. However, there is a 2020 Netflix movie in which the use of the haunted house theme reaches perfection, which is reflected in its perfect critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Its plot revolves around a couple of immigrants, who run away from Sudan’s civil war and try to start a new life in a new country, turning hostile to them. The UK government assigns them a derelict house, which appears to be inhabited by an evil creature.
The main characters get tormented not only by the poltergeist with its ghostly noises and supernatural things happening in the house, but also with the society, which forces them to be the quiet and the good ones, complicating the aftermath of their tragedy.

It has been known for a while that the new West End production of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, will be returning to the Duke of York’s Theatre from May 11 through August 3, with Jamie Lloyd directing. But, more importantly for some fans, it has been confirmed that Spider-Man star Tom Holland will be playing Romeo in the play, with Bad Education star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers co-starring as Juliet. And while all of this seems fine and dandy to us, some people are dissatisfied with the fact that Juliet will be played by a black actress and have taken to the Internet to express their anger in the most deplorable way.
The young actress has, thus, been the target of significant racial slander and abuse recently, which is an act that has to be condemned immediately. The producers, as well as some of Rivers’ colleagues, were quick to react,...

More than 800 Black women — including Lashana Lynch and Sheila Atim — and non-binary actors signed an open letter in support of Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, who has been the target of online racial abuse following the announcement of her casting as Juliet in a London West End production of Romeo & Juliet. She is set to star alongside Tom Holland’s Romeo in the play.

There is no such thing as a perfect movie.
No matter how integral a certain film may be to the history of cinema, no matter how widely beloved it might be by a mass audience, and no matter how politically and sociologically relevant it may have been to the modern world, there is always an error, a nitpick, an omission, or a production problem that can be included. No work of art is going to be 100% unassailable, largely because a wide swath of humanity will be able to see it, and no two people are going to feel exactly the same way about it.
In modern parlance, the closest critics and audiences may be able to come to a measurable consensus is the approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The way Rotten Tomatoes works: professional critics, writing for a broad gallery of approved outlets, submit a review to Rt, selecting it to be "fresh" or "rotten.

Soon after “Saltburn” debuted on Amazon Prime, it joined the 1 million watch club on Letterboxd (the leading social media app for film lovers) and was one of the fastest to do so this year. The film has completely taken over social media due to its provocative, erotic sensibilities. “Transfixing and hypnotic, writer/director Emerald Fennell has crafted a provocative and diabolical masterpiece”, writes Awards Daily. Despite being nearly a month since its release, “Saltburn” remains in the top 3 most watched programs on the platform, film or television, in both the UK and US.
“Saltburn” reaped five bids at the Critics’ Choice Awards including Best Picture. Lead Barry Keoghan and scene-stealer Rosamund Pike contended at the Globes. Fennell’s sophomore feature merited 11 longlist mentions at BAFTA.

Griselda is ready for her close-up.
Today, Netflix unveiled the official trailer for its upcoming Sofia Vergara limited series, Griselda.
The six-part series will debut on Thursday, January 25, 2024.
Griselda is inspired by the life of the savvy and ambitious Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history.
In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco's lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as "the Godmother."
This looks set to be a massive departure for Sofia Vergara, who was a lead on Modern Family before moving on to judge on America's Got Talent.
Vergara is also set to executive produce the series alongside Eric Newman and Andrés Baiz. Baiz is set to direct all six episodes.

When Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) is kidnapped by rogue MI5 agents, it’s up to her fellow Slow Horse agents to save her in the first trailer for Season 3 of “Slow Horses.”
Apple TV+ released the preview on Tuesday for the British spy show, which returns with the first two episodes of Season 3 on Nov. 29. A new episode premieres every Wednesday through Dec. 27.
“I need a team of good agents, but I just have the Slow Horses,” laments slovenly senior agent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who never misses a chance to crack wise, even when lives are on the line.
Later in the clip, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) calls from a besieged warehouse to tell Lamb, “There are men outside with guns. Some backup might be handy.”
Lamb’s nonchalant reply, “Well, I’m busy.”
Responds a frustrated Cartwright, “Ok, thanks, I’m sure the situation will resolve itself.”

Apple TV+ has shared a first look at “Slow Horses” Season 3, which will premiere on the streamer on Dec. 1.

‘Raging Grace’ FrightFest Review – Gothic Horror Mines Suspense and Terror from Immigrant Experience
Writer/Director Paris Zarcilla’s feature debut, Raging Grace joins films like His House and No One Gets Out Alive in examining the horrors of immigration from within the walls of a haunted house. Instead of ghosts from the past or creatures, though, Zarcilla spins a taut tale of gothic horror combined with personal drama that sets it apart. The focus on its characters means a slower-coiling horror story, but one that surprises with unexpected detours.

Even if you don't know his name, you've probably seen the work of Javier Botet. Specifically, if you've watched a horror movie in the 21st century, you've almost surely seen him. Or rather, you've seen his creatures. After scaring the pants off audiences worldwide with his terrifying work in the modern classics "Rec" and "Rec 2," Botet became horror's go-to "monster guy," sliding into the unsettling skins of ghosts, demons, zombies, aliens, and even non-Pennywise incarnations of the titular creature in "It." On the small screen, he played creatures in "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Game of Thrones." On the big screen, his credits include "Mama," "The Conjuring 2," "Crimson Peak," "His House," "Insidious: The Last Key," and so much more. He's the century's definitive monster performer.
Born with Marfan syndrome, Botet has utilized his physical differences to pull off characters who feel like walking, actually-there special effects. He stands 6' 7" tall and he's impossibly thin,...

Let’s hold a moment of silence for the presence wasted in writer and director Harry Owens’ feature debut, The Unsettling. Leading performances are admirable, but the tediously sluggish narrative is an ambiguous slog that culminates with the impact of a handkerchief slap. Owens’ themes feel indebted to Remi Weekes’ His House and Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny — aligned with African horror tales on American soil — only to abandon subplot roots in a finale stricken by amnesia. The Unsettling is an unfortunate example of contemporary “Trauma Horror” trends and slow-burn A24 genre signatures, underselling both before rolling credits on what feels like unfinished business.
Abena (Zephani Idoko) and Kwame (Bambadjan Bamba) are a Ghanaian couple who’ve just suffered the loss of their daughter. Kwame books a Los Angeles vacation thanks to his friend Charley’s gracious deal on a quaint rental somewhere in the suburbs, away from tragic reminders of their lost child.

This post contains spoilers for "Speak No Evil."
Get ready for a new golden age of horror, as directors turn to the only genre besides superhero blockbusters that still brings people to movie theaters. Horror continues to evolve beyond its apparent genre confinements into a versatile tool for diverse and nuanced storytelling. We've already had standout examples of this with 2021's "His House," and the trend continued in 2022 with a slate of fascinating horror fare that included the genre confounding "Barbarian" and Jordan Peele's "Nope" -- none of which were as disturbing, though, as "Speak No Evil."
The setup is simple: Two families meet while on a Tuscany excursion. By the end of their vacation, Danish couple, Bjørn (Morten Burian) and Louise (Sidsel Siem Koch), are comfortable enough with Dutch couple Patrick (Fedja van Huêt) and Karin (Karina Smulders) to accept an invitation to their country house in The Netherlands.

There’s a certain rite of passage that every British male actor of a certain age who has recently displayed a certain set of skills onscreen must go through — at some point they’ll be talked up as a possible James Bond.
For Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, this happened shortly after the first season of Gangs of London, the Gareth Evans-created brutal and blood-soaked crime thriller series, which aired on Sky in the U.K. in 2020 and the next year on AMC+ in the U.S.
The first episode alone — in which Dìrísù’s undercover cop character, Elliot Finch, takes out an entire pub’s worth of Eastern European bruisers (with fists, feet, pint glasses, ashtrays and a solitary playing dart) and, in a later more Saw-like scene, battles a man wearing only boxer shorts and rubber boots and brandishing a meat cleaver...

Ell Balinska doesn’t care much for method acting. When you play a character who spends the entirety of a movie running from a deranged killer who can smell your blood, that seems like a pretty healthy attitude. The 26-year-old Brit, whose mother is the former top model and Food Network host Lorraine Pascale, knows a thing or two about protecting yourself in the midst of a grueling career. Though she is covered in blood in almost every scene of chilling new movie “Run Sweetheart Run,” she learned very quickly not to take work home with her.

Netflix is “removing its first ever original series” – and its lead star is none too pleased.
Each month, the streaming platform takes down a large quantity of titles due to licencing rights.
However, users have been surprised to recently discover that some titles billed as Netflix Originals were among those to be removed.
It’s now been reported that Lilyhammer, the series that was promoted as the service’s first ever original, will be taken down, and lead actor Steven Van Zandt has expressed his disappointment with the news.
“I haven’t had it confirmed, but it looks like Lilyhammer is about to be disappearing from Netflix, for which it was the very first show, on Nov 20,” he wrote on Twitter.
Zandt, whose birthday comes two days after, added: “Some birthday present! Big drag. It’s only 24 episodes. So if you haven’t seen it, or want to rewatch it,...

Netflix UK is removing one of its most acclaimed horrors after just two years on the service.

However, users were surprised to discover in September that the service was removing Hemlock Grove, one of its first ever series to be listed as a Netflix Original.
It sparked a discussion about the availability of the series after its departure, with many expressing concern over the future of other Netflix Originals.
It’s now been revealed that the next Original to be removed in the UK will be His House, the Bafta-winning horror from writer-director Remi Weekes.
But, it’s worth noting that, while it’s listed as an Original, the film was actually a co-production with BBC Films and New Regency, who were the financiers. After the film is removed on 29 October, it will have...

As the "Star Wars" galaxy continues to expand, so does the sheer volume of characters that inhabit it. It seems like everyone has appeared in a "Star Wars" project of some kind, or at least auditioned for one. The franchise has become a pretty formidable incubator for lesser-known talent for this very reason. So many actors have been "discovered" through an appearance in a "Star Wars" film, whether they be relative unknowns or craft-focused character actors. Nowadays, it seems like it's less a question of whether someone will join that galaxy far, far away, but when.
Casting for something as huge as "Star Wars," however, is always going to be tricky. The franchise needs actors with star power for sure, but the more they can "disappear" into the world, the better. Fortunately, there are still so many underrated actors out there that could really bring something new to "Star Wars.

Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù is no stranger to intensity. He's perhaps best known for star-making turns in the 2020 horror "His House" and the infamously-brutal crime drama "Gangs of London." On stage, Dìrísù has portrayed heavyweight champ Cassius Clay in "One Night in Miami," and his 2018 portrayal of Coriolanus with Royal Shakespeare Company saw the actor covered in blood from head to toe, "Carrie"-style. He's racked up a formidable list of credits in a short amount of time, each more compelling than the last. But until "Mr. Malcolm's List," the actor had yet to play a romantic lead, least of all in an...

Step aside Mr. Darcy and Anthony Bridgerton — Regency-era London has a new most eligible bachelor.
Based on Suzanne Allain’s romance novel of the same name, “Mr. Malcolm’s List” centers on the titular Mr. Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù of “His House”) who has impossible standards for his bride to be. Mr. Malcolm jilts love interest Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) after she fails to meet one of his requirements, and Julia enlists best friend Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto) to go full “John Tucker Must Die” on Mr. Malcolm — aka, pretend to be his perfect woman with the intentions of duping the dumper into now becoming the dumpee.
“Emily in Paris” breakout Ashley Park and “The Time Traveler’s Wife” heartthrob Theo James also star, alongside Oliver Jackson-Cohen of “The Invisible Man” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “Hill House” fame.
The film premieres in theaters July 1, with Bleecker Street distributing the title.

Freida Pinto is presented as the ideal bride for a picky bachelor in the trailer for “Mr. Malcolm’s List,” directed by Emma Holly Jones and starring Pinto, Sọpẹ Dìrísù, Zawe Ashton and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. Suzanne Allain adapted the screenplay from her own novel of the same name, a period piece that lovingly pays homage to the spirit of Jane Austen and other Regency rom-coms.
“I promise you will be well entertained,” vows Ashton’s Julia Thistlewaite in a letter to her childhood friend Selina Dalton (Pinto.) Julia believes she has been humiliated by Mr. Malcolm, the titular gentleman played by Dìrísù, after learning she does not meet the list of requirements he has composed for a potential wife. “I would love for Mr. Malcolm to receive the comeuppance he deserves,” Julia tells Selina, and the trailer outlines her plan: “If we present you as the perfect woman then he discovers...

The BloodList, an annual ranking of the best unproduced horror and genre screenplays, has published the 13th edition of its “Fresh Blood” series just in time for Halloween.
The reveal was made on Friday by Village Roadshow Pictures and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, who earlier this year announced a first-look partnership to mine the list for feature films. BloodList was created by Kailey Marsh, who is a literary manager and producer at Brillstein.
The two projects that Village Roadshow has selected for development are “On the First Day of Christmas” by Casey Giltner and “Zero Feet Away” by Jose Nateras. Gitner’s script follows a little girl who begins receiving sinister Christmas presents coinciding with the traditions of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” In Nateras’ script, a young man’s love life is complicated by his identity as a gay, Mexican American, and werewolf — while his actual life is put in danger...
