Sex & Nudity

  • Throughout the series, sexual assault is mentioned a lot and is a plot point. Though it is not explicitly shown, it is implied a lot.
  • The aftermath of a rape is shown; there is no explicit nudity, but various shots make it clear that the character has been bound at the wrists and stripped to the ankles.
  • In one scene, two characters are in a bed (one tied of whom is tied to it) and covered from the waist down by a bedsheet. They are about to be raped, but it is interrupted before it occurs.
  • Ep9a 16 year old boy is sold to an older man by his half brothers. In a scene, the boy, the man, and another boy are half naked in a bed (no lower body parts visible). Nothing occurs further as the man leaves the room soon.
  • Ep 19 a man is in a bathtub and a woman is sitting .He is flirting her

Violence & Gore

  • Mostly blood violence, guns and knives are used a lot
  • A lot of minor characters, typically gang members or mafioso, are killed throughout the series from shootouts, stabbings, sniping or being caught in explosions. Some of these scenes come out of nowhere and are very graphic.
  • There are at least six graphic depictions of suicide via guns and knives throughout the series.
  • An 18 year old drives a drill through a man's chest while the man attempts to rape him. The man stabs him in the shoulder and twists the kinfe.
  • In one episode, the main character stabs the penis of another man with a fork. The man screams in pain and blood is shown; blood also shown stained on the fork with which the man was stabbed.

Profanity

  • Has a lot of swearing and sexual-based language depending on the Japanese-English translations

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The main plot point of the story is about a LSD-like, mind-controlling drug.
  • A 17 year old runs a bar and drinks there. He also gives alcohol to a 12 year old and a 19 year old.
  • A 16 year old gang leader is seen drinking wine in almost every scene he is in.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The anime has a lot of controversial content used as plot point such as rape, pedophilia and sex trafficking (trigger warnings) that some viewers can find distressing
  • Child sex trafficking, mainly of pre-teen boys, is a recurring theme. A lot of parents will find this subject matter upsetting.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A main character is drugged and shot, viewers may find distressing.
  • Banana Fish, the titular mind-control drug of the series, causes its victims to feel extreme paranoia and attack people they're tricked into believing are out to kill them. There's a race against time by the main characters to expose it, but they face constant danger, including mob assassins who are sent to silence them.
  • Ash is killed in the very last ten minutes of the series when a vengeful character stabs him in the middle of a street. He bleeds out in the New York Public Library while clutching on to a letter from his friend, Eiji. Very emotional and sad.
