"That story that's written all over your face..."
FlauerPauer22 October 2019
Don't miss it. You can almost touch and breathe the love atmosphere that Dev Patel creates while telling his tale. He has grown up to keep evolving the giant actor he already was at "Slumdog...". Fantastic performance of all the 4 characters. The chemistry between them is amazing. Would love to see more of Julie & Michael's story, seems much more complex, it would worth a whole episode.

I LOVED IT
ChrisaRafa29 October 2019
I'm not into movies. I prefer series. But if these two stories would be movies, I would have watched them. Wrong timing. Lessons that HAD to be learnt. Great performances by all 4 actors. I haven't watch Patel in anything else and I really loved him. And Andy Garcia! Gosh, this man is treasure.

The Defining Episode
DodoDroppings29 August 2021
The cheese and corn aside, every ingredient put together to cook up this episode somehow align to form the spectrum of my interpretation of the blasted word. The whole nine yards.

There's this effortless depth in its telling that hasn't been put on film in quite some time...let alone in rom-coms. Almost perfect casting too.

A smart, moving piece

Warning: Spoilers
I love the idea of a young and old person crossing paths and exchanging life stories. How they affected the other is also executed brilliantly at the end. I love how lighthearted and exciting the young love story is. The old love story is more deep but the emotions are so strong. It just felt so real. This episode gives me so much feels. One quote that stays in my head is "for a fleeting moment, i felt alive again."

Beautifully written and acted
deborah-9917223 October 2019
Excellent cast and compelling story about first loves. Catherine Keener is so wonderful. Dev Patel is also great. A middle-aged journalist interviews a young entrepreneur and their stories dovetail in a meaningful way. Roads taken, roads not taken. A+

Feels like a rom-com

If you love rom-coms, you will love this episode. Makes me wish this premise was an entire movie. The chemistry is great and Dev Patel is perfect for rom-com leading man!

Wow! Best love story I've seen in a while
marjorieriddleduffie28 December 2019
I've never gone straight to IMDB to write a review before, but I just finished the second episode of Modern Love and felt compelled to write this. The storytelling of two couples' relationships was beautifully done. The characters in Catherine Keener and Andy Garcia's story is just heartbreakingly breathtaking yet tastefully done (unlike most impulsive Hollywood stories these days). You have to watch this episode. I'm a sucker for a great love story, and this is the best one I've seen on screen in years.

Ghost of lovers past! Touching to see that old flames can reconnect!
blanbrn13 February 2020
Many can relate to losing love and connecting our wanting to reconnect with an old flame, and this episode 2 from season one of "Modern Love" highlights that theme just perfect. Called "When Cupid Is A Prying Journalist" involves Dev Patel as Joshua a dating app inventor who feels burned by love and as he relates his story to a journalist named Julie(Catherine Keener) memories and thoughts of passion and times past are brought out in her! It's like the past has come back for her! And this prompts Joshua to visit his past love and give a try with his ex lover. Overall well done episode that gives hope to anyone who wants to reconnect with a past love of their life.

Wow..Superb love story.
I used to feel Hollywood has stopped making emotional love stories.. Imagine my surprise when this one ep conveyed emotions many movies don't.. John Carney has made a couple of my fave movies(even Begin Again!) and his filmmaking style and this story are a match made in heaven All the actors did justice to their roles No spoilers but I haven't been this happy at an ending for quite some time Hope is a rare commodity these days and this story gives you a lot of it..

Math Anyone?
renaprego19 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I felt that the first episode's writing was...eh...and so I gave it another shot with the second. While this episode was much better in terms of writing and acting...there were some MAJOR FLAWS... like in the timeline. Michael and Julie meet at the age of 22 years old. They are reunited 17 years later? Um...that would make them 39...these actors are in their 60's! Wait, it gets better...so let's say they are 39... this episode comes out in 2019. 17 years earlier would be 2002. The whole premise of the story is that he lost the book with her address in it and had no way to contact her. WHAT???!!! Besides the fact that most people had cell phones in 2002, ESPECIALLY IN EUROPE (at least I did in Italy in 1999) we sure as hell had the internet and email addresses. What 22 year old or older didn't have an email address in 2002? Ok, let's play devil's advocate. Let's pretend this didn't come out in 2019 and we are in some other year that they forgot to establish. Did he not have this women's name or where she was from? You want me to buy that these two people were so in love, but neither of them could be bothered to do a little bit of research to try and find one another? But were not finished. MIchael then goes on to tell us how he got married a year later. So he's 23 years old when he gets married and his kids are still young? Like 10. Sure, I guess they could have waited many years before having children, but if he and his wife are in their 60's...I would say that most likely they didn't start having kids in their 40's/50's. Sure, it could happen, but something tells me that math was not this author's strong suit...the jury is still out on whether writing is either. I'm hoping it gets better... if not, then at least it gives me hope that someone will greenlight my project.

Phew...ok...just finished ep. 3 and yes, the writing does get better, much better (although Anne Hathaway's overly hair sprayed hair was a little distracting in the supermarket-but those hair lady's always go a little overboard on the 'last looks') And I liked the direction of this episode as well. The acting? Great. This episode actually made me cry. The stars have been elevated from 3 to a 7. Let's see if it continues to hold...

A story about just ...life! The twists and turns that bring you to what is meant for you. A little courage, a little faith is all you need for an everlasting love.

Just move on, people
dccvc12 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Yikes. I fail to see the 'smart or moving' nature of this episode. We see characters hurt others, end new relationships, end marriages... and at root hurt themselves, because of an obsessive attachment over idealized ex lovers.

You'll like this episode if you like Dev Patel's behavior at a job interview. If you think flirting with another job contestant, getting quickly obsessed with her, and dropping the interview for a zoo date is romantic, you'll be fine with this episode. To me, it's a ton of red flags.

Love beyond lust involves sustainability (which outside of the upper class, involves having a job). I wasn't getting that sustainable vibe from anybody here. All of the characters, except admittedly Dev Patel, cheat on their partners to be with someone new. Wait, actually it's worse than that because that at least would imply growth and change. Everybody here cheats on their current partners to be with exes. One character cheats with her ex, and the ending we're supposed to cheer on shows the same person reject a fiance and shack up with yet another ex (notice a bad pattern?). Another character ends a long-term marriage after one night admittedly spent with an ex.

Now, there's nothing wrong with showing love's complexity. But this episode seemed more like a celebration of bad behavior. There are good things and bad things about modern love. One of the worst parts is the insecurity. Seeing people end apparently decent long-term relationships because of their hang-ups with exes wasn't entertaining or informative to me. But seeing that behavior romanticized was beyond frustrating.

I like this show overall. But I really do prefer the message from the Tina Fey episode later. For all their whining, at least it shows how to maintain a mature love, the kind of hard work that keeping a relationship going for years.

Two love stories for the price of one!
sue-0623916 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A female journalist, while interviewing a young, successful man, hears him talk of his sadness about the woman that got away. This inspires her to tell him her own story of the man she loved and lost.

The appearance of the wonderful, gorgeous Andy Garcia made this part of the story extra special for me. My hopelessly romantic self delighted in their reunion but then felt so sad that it wasn't to last.

Lovely acting from all concerned.

BEST episode of the ENTIRE series by FAR!!!
jamesbutler-3559323 November 2021
If I could give this episode 11 stars, I would. Seriously phenomenal. I'd say flawless, even. Incredible from start to finish. I've watched it so many times with several different people, and every time the other person is just as impressed as I am. Love it!

The most beautiful story

The connection of Dev Patel & Catherine Keener is electric. The truths that have been weighing them down can be told to no one else. This series has been so wonderfully cast with the actors and the stories they are in - BRAVO!

ONCE A CHEATER ALWAYS A CHEATER

Misleading youth on what real love is.

Idk why i need to write 150 characters.

One line was sufficient Don't read further I'm just filling up space to complete one hundred and fifty characters only. I think this is enough.

A beautiful "twin flames" story
rebeccasafarikova30 March 2024
This episode touched me deeply. If you ever experienced (or heard of) a connection called twin flames, this one is for you. It resonated with me on so many levels. Not many will understand, but those who very lucky enough to meet their twin flame will appreciate this greatly.

Beautifully written and performed. I was happy and gutted at the same time watching these 2 stories unfolding in front of me. I know exactly what the characters were talking and thinking about. I felt what they felt, because I felt it before in real life. It's a connection like no other and it was handcrafted beautifully from the beginning to the end.

Like a Hallmark movie but with big name actors
jfreund126 July 2021
Honestly, this episode was pretty cringe.

Felt kind of like a Hallmark movie, except with much more well-known actors.

Shame, given the talent involved - Dev Patel, Catherine Keener, Andy Garcia, and written and directed by John Carney of Once and Begin Again fame, and this is the end result? (Come on, John; what are you doing??)

Hoping the rest of the series will contain some winners.

Corny and encourages infidelity
jake-h-morson19 November 2019
This episode basically encourages couples to cheat on each other for the fantasy of an ex-lover. The women who do this are cast favorably while the men they cheat on are cast flat, drab characters who are given no second thought.
