Gunsmoke set a record as the longest-running scripted television show on primetime with 20 seasons under its belt between 1955 and 1975. It went down in history as one of the greatest Western dramas ever to hit the screen, but some fans would argue that the awards season didn’t give it the attention that it deserved. Gunsmoke won five Emmy Awards over its 20 seasons, although none of them went to lead actor James Arness.

Actor-director Marco D’Amore, who played the ruthless central character Ciro Di Marzio on the Italian mob show “Gomorrah,” is directing “Caracas” a Naples-set drama in which he stars opposite Toni Servillo.
“Caracas” is a co-production between Picomedia, Mad Entertainment and Vision Distribution, which will release the film in Italy.
Vision Distribution’s international unit, headed by veteran sales agent Catia Rossi, is launching sales on the film at Berlin’s upcoming European Film Market.
In “Caracas,” which is based on writer Ermanno Rea’s novel “Napoli Ferroviaria,” Servillo plays Giordano Fonte, a Neapolitan author of international fame who returns to his hometown after many years. There he intersects with a former acquaintance nicknamed Caracas, a man originally from Venezuela who, having been a Neo-fascist skinhead, is now in the process of converting to Islam.
The film is a journey into the multi-ethnic, crime-ridden port city, where Caracas rules over the area near Naples’ central station.

World premiering in the main Canneseries competition, “El Inmortal – Gangs of Madrid” marks the latest original series from Movistar Plus, the Spanish pay TV/SVOD arm of Telefonica, made with Banijay’s Dlo Producciones and Telemundo Streaming Studios. Beta Film handles international distribution.
It shows. A Movistar Plus hallmark, “El Inmortal” reflects a real-life Spanish reality, the rise and fall – or here, fall and rise, then maybe fall and rebound – of the founding leader of Los Miami, a gang which controlled Madrid’s insatiable ‘90s drug business. José Antonio’s real-life counterpart survived four attempts on his life, becoming a legend and gaining his epic sobriquet.
But it also nails other facets of high-end scripted fiction.
“El Inmortal” begins as quiet-spoken ‘90s Madrid drug lord José insists on living his life, driving his infant daughter to her posh primary school.

Launched in 1998, the Malaga Film Festival first grabbed attention as a Spanish movie showcase and birthplace of a Spanish star system, TV actors walking a red carpet to acclaim from milling throngs.
Under Juan Antonio Vigar, director from 2013, it has consolidated as a platform for a new generation of Spanish filmmakers while adding ever increasing industry heft – co-pro forums, WIPs, a Hack digital forum initiative – and also opening up to TV.
In 2021, however, Malaga Festival and Spanish Screenings have exploded in scale, impact and attendance. The narrative of this year’s event is largely one of that growth. Eight takes on this and other Malaga highlights:
Malaga Lifts Off
Little wonder Malaga forms part of what’s now the Spanish Screenings Xxl. In its first full edition since 2019 with festival and industry onsite and aligned, Malaga has truly taken off. Traditionally, Spanish broadcasters retained all rights, paying producers a percentage of the budget of their series, which prevented them from building catalogs of their own rights. Although at first, the arrival of SVOD platforms didn’t change their business relationship, the increasing demand for TV fiction and financial needs have forced an increased use of the co-production model.
“There is a lot of creativity and versatility in co-productions from Spain,” says Caroline Servy, managing director at The Wit.

From launch, critics dogged HBO Max about its higher pricing, the lack of access via Roku — and most of all, the apparent dearth of must-see shows that would make the streamer essential instead of one more platform among so many. Last summer, the complaints were still fresh when HBO Max announced a slate of international acquisitions: There, next to “The Great Pottery Throw Down,” was “Gomorrah.” All four seasons, companion movie “The Immortal,” and a fifth season to come. An Italian mafia drama didn’t get much attention; it wasn’t the stuff of corporate strategy.
But “Gomorrah” is much more than a quirky streamer pickup. For its Italian producer, Cattleya, “Gomorrah” sparked a trend in gritty, real-world storytelling that reshaped Italian TV. Beta Film — a company founded to exploit Federico Fellini’s “La Strada” — licensed “Gomorrah” in nearly 200 countries, and it became one of the most successful properties in its history.

As president of NBCUniversal’s Telemundo Global Studios, Marcos Santana has spearheaded the U.S. Hispanic network’s headlong drive into a challenging era where global streaming platforms dominate and legacy networks are reassessing their place in the television universe.
A raging pandemic has also spiked production challenges. His previous positions as president o f production unit Telemundo International Studios and of distribution arm Telemundo International has given him a holistic perspective on the biz.
Telemundo International Studios, which Santana founded in 2016, took on the shifts in international viewing habits and demands by creating high-end short-form scripted formats and launching big-budgeted Spanish-language premium series, which invariably call for more special effects and locations.
Reigning above the latter now is “Queen of the South,” starring Kate del Castillo, which is in pre-production on its third season, which Netflix will again co-produce as it did the second season.

Robert Kirkman’s upcoming animated series “Invincible” has added six more “Walking Dead” stars to it’s voice cast, the creator announced during his Comic-Con@Home panel on Friday.
Lauren Cohan, Chad Coleman, Michael Cudlitz, Lennie James, Ross Marquand and Sonequa Martin-Green will reunite with fellow “Twd” alum Steven Yeun on the eight-episode Amazon series, which is based on Kirkman’s comic series of the same name.
Yeun will play 17-year-old Mark Grayson, who’s just like every other guy his age — except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man. But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems. J.K. Simmons will voice Omni-Man, with “Killing Eve’s” Sandra Oh as Mark’s mother.

On July 15, Nintendo will add The Immortal to Nintendo Switch Online’s ever-growing collection of retro games. As a free game that initially appeals with its “side of the van” cover art and promises of dungeon crawler gameplay, I imagine that you may be tempted to try it.
That’s why I feel obligated to warn you now that The Immortal is not the innocent Nes game that it appears to be. In fact, it’s a game so frustrating, confusing, and downright cruel that it has haunted the dreams of any gamer who was unfortunate enough to give it a shot in 1990. Back then, they didn’t know that they were about to experience what may very well be the meanest thing publisher Electronic Arts ever unleashed upon the world in the decades before microtransactions.
These days, infamously difficult games like The Immortal are typically referred to as the “Dark Souls” of whatever genre.

Exclusive: The fifth season of Italian crime hit Gomorrah is due to shoot at the end of the summer, we can reveal. But that could be the last we see of the mob epic, according to the show’s producer Cattleya.
“We expect to start Gomorrah between July and September,” Cattleya President Riccardo Tozzi has told us.
Marco D’Amore, who plays iconic character Ciro Di Marzio in the drama, will return to direct the first five episodes with series regular Claudio Cupellini also helming.
The scripts are currently in advanced development and “there will be a lot to prepare,” admits Tozzi due to the production challenges posed by coronavirus. As usual, the plan is for one episode of the Sky-backed show to shoot outside of Italy.
“I think it will be great,” said Tozzi about the new series. “Each time, we’ve tried to do something different. We’ve found...

Piera Detassis, who heads the Italian Film Academy that runs the David Awards, is no longer anxious about how the no-frills ceremony for the country’s top prizes will play out.
Ever since the coronavirus outbreak, Detassis had been “tormented” about whether to go forward with the prizes, originally scheduled for April 3. But now that it’s been decided, in tandem with pubcaster Rai, to hold them on May 8, with no red carpet, no live audience, with live web platform hookups conducted by star host Carlo Conti in a studio, she’s just “curious to see how it goes,” she says.
“It will be an experiment…to see how much emotion we can transmit with this technology,” says Detassis. The 97-minute Davids ceremony is about half as long as the average Oscars one.

When you look at the very best WWE superstars of all time, there are certainly certain names that come to mind, but there are a lot of them. If you go back to the eras of Bruno Sammartino and make your way to modern-day, you’ll be reeling off many names. The WWE has existed in defined eras since the days of Hulkamania and Rock ’n’ Wrestling existed in the 80s. We’ve had an array of times, from The Golden Era, The New Generation, The Attitude Era, The Ruthless Aggression Era, The Reality Era and whatever it is right now, in 2019.
