Warning: Spoilers
A waste of what is obviously a relevant topic in society in a shooting at a public place. If they just focused on that then this could have been an exciting episode. Instead it went off the rails and got political and then got involved in an estranged mother daughter relationship. That's almost SVU-esque odd twists and turns.

Rename this show "family matters"
aopek13 February 2021
When you have a period in a tv show that 8 out of 10 cases are involving around some character's family member ... your writers are out of ideas.

Please stop making daughters, sons, brothers, wives , sisters, father in law, old flames etc parade in this show every second episode.

It's getting boring.

Consistently top-notch writing makes this series so durable

One of TV's great successes, NCIS continues to provide quality entertainment lo these many years since it spun off from another fine show, JAG.

This episode is notable for subtle and quite skilful planting of clues and almost subliminal foreshadowing, making the finale and denouement forceful and even surprising - a key element week after week.

Two touches I really enjoyed were: the introduction of a cryptic new character at the very end, hinting at more revelations concerning the Ziva plot thread; and especially a fabulous detail of the green copy paper, introduced comically at the beginning, popping up at a crucial moment in a note written by Maria Bello, adding panache to a key scene near the end.

It's moments like this that continue to lift this series above the overworked routine of a police procedural TV format.

Director's interpretation of the characters a bit off

Good storyline but this episode had moments of poor directing.

NCIS usually has episodes directed by different people. Most of the time, the transition between directors is seamless - the characters act in a certain way; there is a stability in their nature.

But this episode had moments of 'wierdness' where some of the characters behaved noticeably different than they do under different direction.

For example, during the 'active shooter' scene, Gibbs stops and listens while Torres babbles on about 'going swan'. The stop in momentum was distracting and felt out of place. There was also a stop and chat with McGee during the scene. When the scene should be go go go, it doesn't seem right to stop for a chat.

There are moments in this episode of overt weakness from Gibbs (such as in the basement at the end) - achieving this can be done subtlety and with a gentle touch (as the other directors manage), but this felt heavy-handed and over the top.

This 'softer, more tolerant' Gibbs seems to be the interpretation of the character by this director and it just doesn't really fit well.

Yet another decent one!

When it comes to "Perennial" it deals with a topic, which is important today and the execution of the topic was mostly decent. That being said I felt that the mystery itself was not as interesting as it could have been.

Overall, a fine episode.
