- After reflecting on the past with Raffi, Picard hires her partner, Cristobal Rios, to help him in his search for Bruce Maddox; Soji's work on the Borg cube catches the attention of the executive director.
- Completely unaware of her special nature, Soji continues her work and captures the attention of the Borg cube research project's executive director. After rehashing past events with a reluctant Raffi, Picard seeks others willing to join his search for Bruce Maddox, including pilot and former Starfleet officer Cristóbal Rios.
- Mars stratosphere ignited after the attack by synthetics. Picard argued at Starfleet that the evacuation of Romulan citizens could continue by using reserve duty officers and the mothballed ships. Their plan included the use of synthetic labor, but Starfleet banned all synthetic life forms all through the Federation. All active units dismantled, and all research halted. Starfleet rules that it was a fatal code error in Synthetics programming. Back then Raffi suspected the involvement of the Tal Shiar, the parent organization of the Zhat Vash. Starfleet cannot fathom that Romulans would attack a fleet built to rescue them. Starfleet is reacting and as a result billions of life forms will perish in the blast radius of the Super Nova.
When Picard resigned following the synth attack on Mars, Starfleet fired Raffi. Picard never though Starfleet would accept his resignation. Now she resents him for that, and for not helping her in the subsequent years, and refuses to join him. She also says that Picard telling his entire plan to Kirsten Clancy was a mistake. She says that she has evidence that a high-ranking Starfleet officer allowed the Mars attack to go forward. Romulans and Starfleet conspired to end the rescue mission. However, she does find him a freelance pilot named Rios (Santiago Cabrera). Picard sends Raffi everything Daystrom had on Bruce Maddox. He wants her to study the evidence and figure out patterns and links.
Picard meets Rios on his ship. Rios is Starfleet to the core, but has a hint of resentment towards the same organization.
On the Artifact, the reclamation project's director, the former Borg drone Hugh (Jonathan Del Arco), allows Soji to interview a Romulan named Ramdha (Rebecca Wisocky) that has been reclaimed from the Borg. Ramdha says that she remembers Soji from "Tomorrow". Ramdha was crew of the very last ship ever assimilated by the captured Borg cube. Soji wants to know what happened which caused the sub-matrix collapse and the severed link to the collective. Ramdha wants to know which sister is Soji, the one who died, or the one who lived. Ramdha declares Soji to be "the destroyer" and tries to kill herself, but Soji unknowingly uses her enhanced speed to stop this from happening. Narissa gets to the Borg ship physically & warns Narek not to get emotionally attached to Soji.
The information on Ramdha's capture by the Borg was classified and it is not clear to Hugh or Narek, how Soji had knowledge of it when she met Ramdha. Narek tells Narissa that Soji has no idea who she is.
Oh approaches Dr. Jurati, who reveals her discussion with Picard. Shortly after this, Picard is attacked by Zhat Vash operatives. Jurati helps kill all of them but one, who also calls Soji "the destroyer" before committing suicide. Picard believes that Oh is a Vulcan, he is not aware of her Romulan ancestry.
Picard agrees to take Jurati on his mission to find Soji, and the pair transport aboard Rios's ship La Sirena. There they are also joined by Raffi, who believes that Soji's creator Bruce Maddox is on the planet Freecloud and will travel with them that far.
Soji calls her mother to know if Dahj is OK. Mother tells that Dahj is fine.
