Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Disjointed
How do children sort out this story? I found it disjointed, confusing at times...... Bummer, because the special effects were fine and Johnny was fine, and the characters also, fine. I felt as though scenes were created just for their effect and dragged on too long and did not necessarily move the story along.
I find it confusing that the dead can feel a whip and drink rum and need rest, when in the first movie 'the dead' could not taste food or experience the feelings of living. I appreciate a script that considers that audience members have intelligence. Any fantasy needs a touch of realism to pull you into the story so that you can suspend thought and believe. I was too often made to realize that I was in a theatre
Wide Sargasso Sea (1993)
Wooden performances throughout.
Back when this movie came out, I read reviews which said how powerful and erotic it was. I finally found the video in a bargain bin and bought it. I found the movie to be a real mismash, with many elements that weren't fully explained. The scenery was wonderful, and one or two of the characters put in good performances, but the two leads were wooden throughout. I was unable to feel empathy for either character. The much touted erotic scenes were not developed, and lacked much enthusiasm. I haven't read Jane Eyre, and maybe this movie tries to explain a few things which happen in that book, but on the whole it seemed contrived, and lacked any real passion. I was disappointed, and certainly won't be keeping my copy of the video. It's going into the trash.
What Women Want (2000)
I would have enjoyed the movie better if I hadn't already seen all the good parts in the trailer.
I am going to stop going to movies which have trailers (prevues) that give everything away! My wife and I were looking forward to What Women Want, but every time a good line was spoken or something happened that would have been a nice surprise, it was ruined because we had seen it in the trailer. Smarten up, movie producers! I have already decided not to see Castaway because I have seen the whole thing in the trailer. It even shows that the castaway makes it home okay after four years on the island! Yes, it's all in the trailer! No thanks to paying $20 for that.
