Desert Blue (1998)
8/10
An unexpectedly enjoyable movie.
15 March 2000
I enjoyed this movie thoroughly. This movie, led by an ensemble cast of young and rising actors (Brendan Sexton, Kate Hudson, Casey Affleck, Christina Ricci), starts slowly but gathers momentum nicely. Skye (Hudson), an up-and-coming actress with her own cable comedy, gets trapped in a small California town well off the highway when a chemical spill shuts down the only road in and out of town. Stuck far from her world -- in a town without cable or cell phones -- Skye is befriended by Blue (Sexton) and meets the local "gang" -- five kids without much to do. Over two days punctuated by explosions -- the results of Ely's (Ricci) love for illicit bomb making -- the group bonds together in unexpected ways.

Drowning Mona (2000)

Everyone hated her, everyone's a suspect.

Mona, an awful woman with no redeeming characteristics, dies under mysterious circumstances. Everyone hated her, everyone's a suspect. Comedic possibilities are endless, but poorly exploited. A good cast (Danny DeVito, Casey Affleck, Jamie Lee Curtis), an enticing premise, but just as funny as it should be.

Strong performances by Beckinsale and Danes in an updated "Midnight Run"
12 March 2000
Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale are high-school friends who travel to Thailand the summer after they graduate, before going to college. Caught leaving the country with a large amount of narcotics, they are imprisoned for 30 years. Both young actresses give strong performances in this drama reminiscent of Midnight Express.

Pitch Black (2000)

This could have been a great sci-fi thriller, but couldn't quite deliver.

The premise (based very loosely on an Asimov short story, Nightfall) is simple: a small band of people, survivors of a space wreck, crash-land on a planet that knows darkness only every few decades -- during which time all the beasties comes out to feast. The acting, plot, premise, and effects are all good -- but could have been better.
