Stigmata (1999)
6/10
A stab at the Catholic church
11 September 1999
This movie was indeed very creepy. Arquette is convincing as a girl who has unwillingly become a messenger of Christ. Byrne is just as good as the priest with conflicting views. Stigmata is not just a movie, but should be a religious awakening of sorts for Catholics. With it's constant references to Jesus' gospel stating "I am all around you...you do not need mansions and preachers to help serve me...I am inside you.", Stigmata points out that the Catholic church may have been hiding Jesus' true wishes for the past 1900 years. As a movie, Stigmata is just another movie in the horror genre. As a message, Stigmata should be heard (and seen) loud and clear.

Sink or Swim (1990)
8/10
A fine film
1 September 1999
Being a film major at UC-Berkeley has allowed me to see many weird and obscure films. Most of them have been boredom zones and haven't much piqued my interests. However, in my Avant-Garde class, we watched Sink or Swim today. I thought it was a fascinating way of using words and the alphabet to help describe a girl's rocky relationship with her father. The use of so many different types of footage (home, TV, stock, etc.) really caught my eye. The ending scene is especially touching. Go find this short but sweet film wherever you can.

Absolute G-A-R-B-A-G-E
16 August 1999
I haven't hated a movie this much in a LOOOONG time. This is the FIRST movie that my neighbor and I have turned off before it is over.....ever!!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGG!!!!!!!!! What was it about!?!?! I mean, I can't for the life of me figure out what was going on in Lost Highway (Bill Pullman picks strange scripts) but I still liked the movie. End of Violence had no point!! I was drifting in and out of unconsciousness while only to be woken up from time to time by my neighbor's "What the hell is going on here!??".................skip this movie at all costs........

Ravenous (1999)

Well worth your while
21 March 1999
After seeing the first preview for this movie awhile back, I didn't think it would amount to much. However, as I kept seeing more and more previews for it, it started to pique my interest. That line "He was licking me!!!" started to sound creepier and creepier....I just got back from seeing the movie and it was way better than I expected. The formula had been done before but never in this way and never with this much style and suspense. The gore was not over-the-top and neither was the acting. The music was the most creepy. At times the music was campy and at other times it was downright spinetingling. Go see this movie, on an empty stomach of course.

8MM (1999)
6/10
A disturbing flick but good nonetheless
27 February 1999
I just got back from seeing 8mm on opening night (my birthday as well) with some friends and we had mixed reviews on it. They said it wasn't something they'd like to think about anymore because of its disturbing nature. I also thought it was disturbing but it was a fine film. It delved deep into the seedy underworld of porn but not so deep as to be overly perverse. When Cage views the box marked XXX-Way TOO Far, and the man tells him they are rape films, I thought that that was the cream of the crap...but snuff is even worse. What my friends and I took with us after this movie was that seedy porn dealers are the trash of this earth and it's very, very disturbing to know that somewhere out there, they are dealing in and making snuff films...sometimes with kids like the girl in the film.
