Macross Plus (1994)
Superb
Macross Plus is one of my all time favourite movies let alone anime / manga movie! It is a superb mixture of action and character driven drama with an awesome soundtrack provided by Yoko Kanno.
The story has been brilliantly crafted into the Macross universe - being set 30 years since the Earth and the Zentraedi war (ala Robotech).
There are two versions of Macross Plus. There is a full length Movie (which I'm yet to see - but I hear has a nude scene) and the more common 4 part-er. They are both suppose to be the same yet different and hold on their own right.
There are about 4 albums available from Soundtracks to Sharon Apple 4 Track Mini-EPs.
Macross Plus is "dedicated to all pioneers" - something these people truly were.
La planète sauvage (1973)
An Incredible Storyline
Wow ... I was totally captivated when I first saw this movie. Based on a book and completely in French with English Sub-titles, it tells a great story about the fears and differences in races. The music is absolutely brilliant, setting the scene perfectly (ala 70s wah-wah) and it was this that initially grabbed my attention. Also, the artwork is exception, especially for it's time.
This is must watch movie - I'd love to get it on DVD -- but I can't find it anywhere. :(
Civvies (1992)
Excellent 6 Part Series Drama
Civvies is an excellent, gripping drama about a groups of ex-paratroopers who leave army life to start a security firm. The 6 parts revolve around the bombing of a pub when they were in Belfast.
Jason Isaacs plays Frank Dillon, a real anti-hero, who has to deal with life in civilian (civvies) clothes.
There are also notable performances by Peter O'Toole and Peter Howitt (from UK TV Show Bread - the first "Joey").
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
Mission Impossible II: Cruise Control - hahah !
I didn't want to see this movie on principle, since the first movie was just crap - I mean as if Mr Phelps is going to be evil - yeah right. However, I got dragged to see this film. I wish I hadn't seen it - I might have thought more of it.
Tom Cruise's (who produced it) face is planted all over the big screen in just about every shot. He thinks he's James Bond. Sleeping with a leading lady and doing everything himself !
I mean ... what about more interaction from the IMF team. They might as well not have been there.
The TV show was always about out-witting the bad guys with some sort of set-up. This is what I really loved about the IM franchise.
Some of the stunts are inconsistent and have no continuity. ie. Tom going flat-tack on a motorbike, then pivoting the bike on the front wheel and somehow coming to an abrupt stop (also while firing his gun at least 5-6 times blowing a car up).
Tom you can't deny the laws of physics and inertia.
The only thing I liked was - it was filmed in AUSTRALIA - even though I wasn't too keen on the images of us.
By this I mean, one minute we are in the heart of Sydney (a thriving CBD - home of the Olympics 2000) and next they are in the Outback with sheep and an old tin shed.
In the TV show, the IMF Force always setup their base camp not far from the scene of where they were trying to dupe someone.
I'm sorry but that doesn't gel ... the outback is NOWHERE NEAR the city.
