In the Morning (2005)
Solid Short Film
I saw In the Morning this fall (2004) and immediately came away from it feeling like this was a fresh new short from a fresh new voice. You'd never know the film wasn't shot in Turkey and that it was made by an American. If you get the chance to catch it at a festival or online, take the time. I won't delve into the content cause it's a short and it'll be easy enough for you to figure it out when you see it. It's Short(duh!), moody as hell (i.e. beautifully shot) and well directed. The hand-held camera, dark lighting and gritty look lends itself incredibly well to the content. Don't be surprised if this short nabs some awards as it has a lot going for it. If you like a good short film, In the Morning will stay with you.
Personal Velocity: Three Portraits (2002)
Strong Voice for Story of life moments.
I found this film very enjoyable. Slightly ambiguous in tone, the film is about moments that define who we are and who we become. Beautifully shot on Digital Video, Personal Velocity is an original and unique picture that makes no excuses for its characters and their flaws. Its honesty and intimacy with the three protagonists help the audience get into their heads and their thought process to better understand who they are and in turn, who we are.
Szpital (1977)
Raw, uncomfortable and a bit funny.
A very raw and intense look at a group of doctors who work their weekly 24 hour shifts. Starting in the morning the film follows the doctors as they treat various patients and accident victims. Laced with cynicism towards the Polish medical system, Hospital shows the non-stop grind and extreme pressures the doctors are put under. If you are squeamish, be warned.
Boys Don't Cry (1999)
Well Rounded, excellent film.
Great Acting, great directing, great camerawork. An all around impressive film, Boys Don't Cry is one of the most powerful and memorable films of the year. Hillary Swank is mesmorizing as Brandon Teena while Peter Saarsgard is haunting and surprising.
Miss Monday (1998)
Smart, intense
Miss Monday is a disturbingly intelligent look at the pains of life that exist behind closed doors. What plays as a stalker/voyeur film turns into a startling and significant realization about the pain and suffering many people endure and hide from the world. The film is as honest and painful as one might hope when indulging into the core of its voyeur's subject.
Diaries (1981)
Strong and important film
Diaries is a brilliant exploration of its author and subject. Ed Pincus documents his life as he transitions from the city back to nature strengthening his role as husband and father. Diaries is an honest and important film that defines autobiograhical filmmaking for the 70's. Ed Pincus utilized the single camera crew technology to make this film.
