Dancer, Texas Pop. 81 (1998)
Smart and heartfelt teen drama.
This was one of the best teen genre movies I've seen in a long time. It doesn't rely on gross out jokes or nudity to further the story (like most other films of this sort). The characters are nicely acted by an impressive cast and the story telling is equally well done. The film takes place in a fictional small West Texas town of 81 residents. While the town is fictional, the people and story are very indicative of small town life. This is a definite must see and is suitable for all audiences. When was the last time you saw a PG movie? Seems like they don't make them anymore.
Down for the Barrio (1996)
One of the worst movies I've ever seen!
Save your money and don't rent this one folks. The acting is shameful and the script is one of the most poorly devised I've ever seen. The premise behind the movie about gangs and the Hispanic culture sounded semi-promising, but the emphasis on the barrio accents is just too much to sit through (the dialog is amateurish and clumsy).
