La fleur du mal (2003)
There are betters of Chabrol
I really liked "Merci pour le chocolat". Maybe that's why I had a little bit to much expectations for "La fleur du mal". The actors convinced me right away, showing the life of a burgeoise family with all their lies and bewilderments. Yes, and now? Show me the dead corpse, show me something behind, show me a hidden secret, a open conflict...I just waited and saw, that Chabrol wasn't going far enough to develop a real deep story. Good acting, shallow content.
Mani Matter - Warum syt dir so truurig? (2002)
A personal favourite
The first seen movie in 2003 will appear to be one of my favourites during 2003. It's not as if there are a lot of surprises or stunning actors between a incredible plot. It's just that as a big Mani Matter-fan it's real nice to see all his friends and related people talk of his short life. And all in the middle of Berne. A warmhearted nice-shot movie...
What Women Want (2000)
Simple, straight, funny...
The story is based on a simple tag-line, which is also being used for the title. The old theme, that men want to know what their counterpart is thinking at the moment.
Mel Gibson (as Nick Marshall) in the main role is playing a successful middle-aged man, who works for a commercial enterprise in the middle of Chicago. His reputation as a chauvinistic 'bloke' and his huge self-esteem make him look like an idiot, like a macho from a 'no-womans' world. Although he is the most suitable man for the job as creative director, he is suddenly outranked by a newly hired manager, played by Helen Hunt (as Darcy McGuire). As clear as water, they don't like each other. As long as Darcy tries to develop a new commercial spot for women's products, giving everyone in her team a box, filled with woman's stuff. That evening, Nick, examing this box, gets an electric shock by falling in a bathtube with a hairdryer. After that, the films main theme is coming to action and Nick hears every single thought in every woman's head. Using this talent as a weapon to get what he wants, he couldn't help himself from falling in love with Darcy. And after many so-called funny scenes, they feel, that they belong together.
I don't want and I don't need to tell you more of this love-comedy. The movie isn't very sophisticated or on a higher level of intelligence. Nevertheless another boring Sunday evening at home is well-spent if you watch this video-tape with your girlfriend. Cause she will like it!
