Muriel's Wedding (1994)
ABBA fan obsesses with getting married.
A delightful, entertaining and enjoyable Australian film. Muriel (or Mariel) 'borrows' some money from her father and leaves her dysfunctional family for Sydney with an old school friend. Muriel answers an ad to wed a South African so he can stay in the country. Laughable moments change into dramatic moments with her friends health problems and her mother's depression. Great music and supporting cast.
The Joy Luck Club (1993)
a must-see movie for everyone.
Please read the others' comments for their important and valued opinions. This movie showed me how lucky I have been during my lifetime when compared with the lives of these women. I've watched this movie three times already and love to watch it with others who have never seen it before. Get the Kleenex ready because you'll need an entire box. A splendid portrayal of asian culture and of its recent past.
A Home of Our Own (1993)
Single mom faces obstacles to establish permanent home for her family
An excellent performance by the entire cast. Kathy Bates as a single mother facing the many odds that seem to conspire to prevent her from making a home for her family. Especially memorable was the Christmas morning scene.
Aliens (1986)
action-packed rescue from an planet infested with horrific aliens
Tense and heart-pounding. Beware the creatures in the bubbling holding tanks...they're still looking for a host. Also, favorites lines include: Newt: "My mommy said there was no such thing as monsters." and "They mostly come out at night...mostly."
