Nice film with beautiful new actress
29 September 2008
Nora Arnezeder reminds me of movie stars of the thirties : beautiful, charming, she can sing, dance, act... Star quality ! As for the film itself, the story is rather simple, which I come to realize, is often what makes it good. It's not so much what the story is about but rather how you tell it. And in that case, you get to laugh, cry, you care about that Pigoil who looses his job, his wife and even his son and who doesn't lose hope, about Milou and Douce's love story. You'll love the great new songs, the homage to Busby Berkeley, Jacky's lousy jokes (a reprise of Kad's own TV skit) and secondary characters played by first-rate comedians like François Morel and the great Pierre Richard. What's not to like ?

Learn about life through tears and laughters
14 July 2002
I was lucky enough to see this film in Avignon more than a month before its national release. How refreshing ! How cute ! It's a documentary like I had never seen before in its shape and subject.

M. Lopez teaches a class in Ardeche, somewhere where the children all go to the same class until they're 10 years old or so. M. Philibert follows them and doesn't intervene, only through editing (except for a straight-forward and very moving interview of the teacher).

M. Lopez really does care about his pupils, he comforts them, helps them with personal problems, with their work, with their lives. He will soon retire and it gives a strong feeling of nostalgia to the film. Some moments are quite emotional, others are quite funny due to children's words. I'm not going to spoil it for you but, keep you eyes on Jojo. He's the cutest little kid ever ! Everything he says or does will make you want to have a kid... or more kids.

Beautiful, simple and sweet.

Magical series
15 April 2002
You don't know what magic means until you have seen this series. They don't make them like this anymore. Yuu is a 'magical girl' that lives a normal life. But then one day she meets a cute creature that gives her the ability to transform into an older girl, Creamy Mami, who will soon become a singing star... From then on she will have to live two very rich lives, with magic to help her.

No ugly alien, no fights with powers used as weapons, the kind of show for which they have lost the recipe. According to cartoon characters nowadays, all boys and girls want to do is fight. Many cartoons I see on TV are now computer generated, which would be fine if it meant better and smoother animation. Unfortunately, it just means cheaper production costs, and actually worse quality !

If you want a show that will make you and your kids dream, sing catchy songs and overall spend a very good time, look for this series and the video sequels... They are all available in DVD in Japan (no subtitles, though), and in France (as "Merveilleuse Creamy" for the dubbed version and as "Creamy Mami" for another box set in Japanese with French subtitles), and... cross your fingers for an American release... some day.

Heavy !
2 February 2002
The film stars Jamel Debbouze who cannot utter one correct word in the whole movie. It's supposed to be funny... I'm telling you, after an hour and a half of `Asterixm' and `Nobelixm', you won't want to get out of the theater, you'll want to set it on fire.

Asterix and Obelix are no longer the lead characters, therefore, Clavier and Depardieu seem to be bored to tears throughout the movie. As for the other actors, well, they're all Canal + material (French private network that produced the movie). Most of them are not even actors. There are a few exceptions like Isabelle Nanty and Claude Rich who turns out to be a better Panoramix than Claude Pieplu In the first movie.

I don't know how the jokes are translated for foreign versions, but since most of them are references to French songs, people, etc., or lousy puns, it'll be a tough job. However, don't worry, even with a bad translation, you're not losing anything.

To give you an idea, Jamel tells some dumb joke at the end to an obviously uninterested girl, and spends like 5 minutes after that explaining why the joke is funny. Ah Ah ! What could hardly be a halfway decent gag, is moreover stretched like an old piece of gum.

There are good points, though, but all related with the incredible amount of money they were given : the images of the desert, the beautiful colors, the breathtaking special effects... Give my butcher the same budget and he'll do just as well.

This movie will probably end up the same way `Asterix and Obelix take on Ceasar' did. In France, the DVD is sold at discount prices because everyone thinks it's not `trendy' enough anymore although, it was also, at the time of its initial release, a `must see' and it's less than 3 years older than this one .

I heard an interview of Jamel saying that he was capable of playing Shakespeare if he wanted to. That's the kind of funny line you wish you'd heard in the movie.

Excellent
26 June 2001
In 8 minutes, Jon Carnoy is giving you the opportunity to debate all evening (and more) on what you would have done had you been one of the characters.

The scope format, never before used by the director, is brilliantly mastered.

French star Ticky Holgado is here at his best in an unexpected dramatic role. It's one of the best shorts I've seen.

A funny little vehicle for Bourvil.
19 March 1999
Of course, this is not the best comedy ever made but it's mighty enjoyable as it always is when Bourvil is around. I guess the best part is Etienne Lorin's song which is supposed to be sung "in English". If you like the French accent, don't miss it!
