The Transporter (2002)
Surprising
I really enjoyed this movie on the first viewing, but found myself reaching for the fast-forward button on subsequent viewings.
I was REALLY surprised with Jason Statham's acting - he was good in Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels but was part of a larger ensemble. In this, he was the lead and tougher and way more cool and the fact that he did 99% of the stunts himself was impressive.
Personally, I would have liked to have seen much more actual "transporting" though, so we could enjoy more of the driving scenes. The ones we do see were cool, unbelievable, but enjoyable ! The soundtrack was good and Qi was an attractive choice - not sure why they needed to pass her off as Japanese though ?! For those who like action movies, with scant disregard for reality, this is an entertaining flick.
Gladiator (2000)
Brilliant in every respect
This is a fabulous movie - but not one for the squeamish. Some of the battle scenes may be a little gory for some, but I didn't think they were gratuitous. It is further complemented by another in a long line of magnificent soundtracks from Hans Zimmer which enhances an excellent script and helps engulf you in this epic tale of a tough but brilliant Roman General. Russell Crowe was a brilliant casting choice and his performance is excellent, further proving himself as a force in Hollywood. I did feel however, that the side story of Commodus' life after the death of his father was perhaps a little too dark and complicated, but hey, that's just me !
The Natural (1984)
Enthusiastic endorsement
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. An excellent story, great music and emotive cinematography. The shot of Wilfred Brimley sitting in the shadows, illuminated by nothing but sparks, finally realising his dream is simply wonderful and moving. Robert Redford is characteristically brilliant as is the cast supporting him.
Ladyhawke (1985)
Forget the music
I found Ladyhawke to be an entertaining movie with an interesting storyline, however its thoroughly inappropriate movie score spoilt it for me. It was far too contemporary for the period. Great acting, costumes and set design though.
