Conan the Barbarian (1982)
This is the best sword & sorcery film ever and a great film over all.
This movie is a masterpiece. Visually stunning and groundbreaking at the time, in the way it takes fantasy seriously. Not until Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The (2001) has there been any attempt on this. This is indeed a very visual film. The acting is superb in its minimalism. Most of the dialogue is made trough looks which is very fitting in a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is truly the best performance of his career. All in all, this movie is very much a masculine movie. It captures the very essence in the male persona. The Nietzschean/Darwinian approach with eastern influences depicts a pragmatic and yet a very fantastical approach to life. Everything is possible if you put your mind to it. There is no absolute truth and one should not hasten into condemning something which one knows little of. Conan tries everything once and learns from it. Sometimes he benefits from it and sometimes he gets hurt. But he always learns. "That which does not kill you makes you stronger" is truly the essence of this film. It may not be true towards the original books but this movie stands on its own. As Milius said, these movies are not made anymore - a big production which actually can teach you something. For a long time we only have brain-dead blockbusters which are made to sell toys or to make little girls get wet over the latest teen pop-pinup. That is until today when we can look forward to the continuation of the Lord of the Rings, the Matrix and finally: King Conan: Crown of Iron!
PS: This review is of the special edition DVD which is quite different from the original.
Dragonheart: A New Beginning (1999)
Severely flawed sequel that has none of the charm of its predecessor.
Severely flawed sequel to an amusing and beautiful original. The CGI dragon is very well animated but the lighting is all wrong and the voice acting is pitiful (not to mention the regular acting). The original film relied heavily on the charisma of Sir Sean Connery's voice(!), so it is no wonder that this film lacks the charm of its predecessor. The film seems aimed towards kids and possibly young teenagers who tend to be somewhat underdeveloped in the intellectual department. The whole production has the feel of a 'Young Hercules' episode (especially the campy martial arts sequences), which is not a compliment...
NeofreemaN out.
Den hemlige riddaren (1997)
A very fun movie. Low budget, but entertaining nonetheless!
Great humor in this film. The film makers are not afraid to experiment with the fantasy genre. The handsome 'Secret Knight' is a surprisingly good actor. The scene where he discovers his family slaughtered is very emotional. I like this film a lot. Good effects, good action and a good laugh!
Pentagon (1997)
Excellent series, very funny indeed especially the Chinese alien.
Excellent series, very funny indeed, especially the Chinese alien and the fish-dealer. Another great moment is the somewhat intrusive neighbour. All in all, an absolutely wonderful portion of Swedish humour at its best. The episodes are a bit short, but that is the only bad thing I can think of.
