Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Great special effects,bad story
Well,I had read a lot about, and heard from other people about how annoying JarJar Binks was,and I guess I'd have to agree,I think most of "his" scenes could have been clipped out,and the movie would have improved quite a bit.The special effects were great,I have no complaints, but it was way too "kiddyfied" for me.The original SW and Return were pushing it pretty close.Lucas should have modeled the new film on the Empire Strikes Back,It wasn't too much one way or another,It brought balance to the force!Hopefully, the next one will get it right...
Aliens (1986)
Nearly a perfect movie!
This is probably my favorite movie, period. Just about everything is perfect, the cast, the storyline, the effects (except the guys in the rubber suits in the "tunnels"). My only real squawk is the music that James Horner ripped off (from himself!!) from Star Trek II, The wrath of Khan! When the "vehicle"is running around, it's the same music as the battle scenes in ST2TWOK! This movie shows how sci-fi/action should and could be done, and everytime I think about it, I think of what Jurassic Park could have been with Cameron directing/writing, and given a Titanic budget! If it would have been done half as well as the book, it would have been one of the all time greats. If you never read the book, do it, and see if I'm wrong.....
Death Wish (1974)
Great flick, very controversial when it was made..
This was a great flick,a lot of movies have ripped off the story or basic character(Bronson,as Paul Kersey,an upscale housing planner for a big outfit, and a C.O.during the Korean War,bluntly,he's a peacnik). His wife and daughter are attacked by Jeff Goldblum!,and his buddies, his first role, and the wife is killed, and his daughter goes catatonic from the trauma. He eventually gets mad as hell, and goes from rolls of coins in a sock,to a gun given to him as a gift, and begins offing muggers who are stupid enough to mess with him after he usually gives them a chance to bail out.He single handedly drops crime in N.Y. 25%(?),and is persued by a not unsympathetic detective. When this movie came out, some of the more "gentle"critics were screaming about vigilantes, and how this film would make killers out of people and a lot of other nonsense. My sister hated it,but she hates most any movie I liked at the time..
The Getaway (1972)
I love this movie, except Ali Mcgraw...
I loved this movie, I think it was the first R rated movie I saw by myself, without "exaggerating"my age. The casting, except for Mcgraw is just about perfect, from Mcqueen as the "hero", Al Letieri as "Rudy" (what a load), Sally Struthers and "Howard Sprague" from the "Andy Griffith Show" as her HUSBAND! Slim Pickins, and all the rest of the weirdo characters coming and (mostly) dying are a hoot! I never understood what the appeal of Ali Mcgraw was supposed to be, she's the worst performer in this movie by a mile, and even with Mcqueen, she's a stiff. Even she wasn't enough to make me not watch it everytime it's on the tube!
Heaven's Gate (1980)
A huge ego trip!
I went and saw this dud the second day it was out.The word was out about how bad it was,but I hadn't heard about it.I wish I had,it sure wasn't worth the 4 bucks or whatever it was to see it.There were only 4 or 5 of us in the theatre, and after a little while,we started making nasty comments to the screen,I finally did it too,and it was sort of fun to rag on it.When the intermission came,we all laughed about it,and wondered if it would get any better,or worse. It got worse!I was sore for days after laughing at the roller skating scene, and the comments we all made were great.I rented it once on tape, and the edited version wasn't much better, but it was shorter. Everything that happened to careers because of this bomb were deserved, the studio let Cimino's ego and girlfriend get completely out of control, along with the budget! How people can think this load of crap is "An Epic"is totally beyond me!
End of the Road (1970)
Well,it was different!
Well folks, here it is,my nomination for the WORST movie ever made!I bought this movie in 1980.I had never seen it before, and a video store had it on sale for 4.99,when BLANK tapes were about 8 bucks or so,so how could I lose?I still have it,I give it to friends to see what they think about it,and they think it is pretty bad,if not worse than me.I never thought a movie with this cast could be this bad,but it is!Let's see,Stacy Keatch in a catatonic state, after his college graduation with a whole load of degrees. He goes into zombie mode at train station, stands there for a couple of days, dog pees on foot.Along comes Mr Jones, who sees Stacy is in trouble, says something like "Yo mama's t*t's as hard as cold cement!",and Stacy wakes up!Goes to "asylum" run by Jones, gets tour, sees guy SCREWING A CHICKEN,along with other sights! Then he begins "treatment"consisting of sound effects playing at earshattering levels, and lots of pictures of war, babies, naked girls, etc flashing on walls, while Jones makes faces and talks very strangely. He eventually is improved enough to leave, gets a job teaching english(I think),has affair with older woman, has occasional relapses, then has affair with boss's wife, gets her pregnant,Jones does abortion, she chokes on own vomit and dies during the procedure. What a flick! What a load of crap this thing is,it's so full of itself! It IS amusing if watched while drunk or drugged, but if you are sober, watch out!!!
